Dangerous Assignment

Rate this book
Stranded in a lonely one room log cabin situated in the middle of nowhere, Kate, a rising star newspaper reporter, is rescued by Steve Morrison, a confirmed bachelor and CEO of a major acquisitions company. She answered an ad on an internet dating site placed by Steve’s brother who is a lifelong practical joker.

Steve finds her fast asleep in the tub in the cabin. He’s fascinated by her violet blue eyes and entranced by her slender, shapely body. Trouble is, Kate doesn’t particularly like men, especially wealthy men in positions of power. And just because he’s gorgeous and well built, unfortunately doesn’t improve the situation. --Amazon.com

I’m giving it a 4 because I think it was good, BUT… it could have gone through another edit process for the flow of the story!
The story basis had so much potential, but it did jump around a bit!
But I added this to my kindle in 2013 and I just got around to reading it! But it was a quick read for me and I enjoyed it enough to finish!

Ok

Story jumped around too abruptly. Rape scene was disturbing. Female character was too whiney and self centered Story line felt like multiple stories mashed together.

Awesome

Great read!!!!! I enjoyed the back and forth of their feelings for one another. The devil of Dianne was the worst. Glad Kate listened to her friend Joanne & stayed.

Decent. Sultry at times. The plot just jumped from one scene to the next in a matter of a paragraph break many times. Needs some editing.

I wanted to like this book, but I there were just too many things about it that bothered me.
First, Kate is kidnapped and left without any means of an escape or calling for help in a one-room cabin by Steve's brother as a joke (for his brother). Upon Steve's rescue of her, she's more upset about her leg falling asleep than the fact that she's been kidnapped and left for days without any hint of what will happen. It was just "off" to me. Kate is depicted in alternating forms as a strong, independent woman and a completely naive, even silly young woman. Steve's character alternates between the understanding and doting lover and the cruel, even violent cad. The contradictions are done without nuance and sophistication; the reader never knows which to expect in any situation. I found the rape of Kate on her wedding night particularly troublesome. Her reaction could be attributed to shock and rang true of a realistic situation but was completely at odds (in my view) with the relationship the couple had leading up to that point. The relationship declines and declines as the story moves on, with each character understanding that they are destroying what might have been a solid partnership but neither willing or able to stop it. The story ends with the birth of their child being immediately followed by Steve's being held hostage for some period (the length of time isn't clear) and upon his return all is forgiven and love conquers all. Three-quarters of the story is about how they can't seem to work it out and only hurt each other more. Kate's difficulty in living with Steve is treated with more realism than her experience as a single parent to a newborn with a missing spouse. Then within ten pages, all is solved and well. It was just a confusing and difficult story for me.
While I feel that much of the story was realistic in that I'm sure situations like this do occur in everyday life - unexpected pregnancy, marriage of convenience, power struggles within said marriage of convenience, domestic violence and how each party handles it, jealousy, the strains pregnancy places on a couple, etc. - this is not what I want to read about in a romance novel. It felt to raw, especially when the conflict and inability to communicate just disappears for the happy ending.
All in all, it just wasn't for me.

I found Kate's character more and more difficult to stomach as the book went on. Comments on her having a first class brain, then labelling the people in her assignment (where she has to interview people from internal personals) as losers, instantly grated on me. It's not that I don't believe the character can have opinion on the matter, but my mistake is automatically assuming someone with a first class brain and a journalist at that would have a little more insight into humans and a little more empathy. This is just one of the starting points of behaviour and dialogue (both internal and exchanged), that ends up making Kate (to me) so unlikeable. Her character unravels and paints her as immature and self-centred, taking no responsibility for her actions.

Steve on the other hand seems to have been hit on the head. There are moments that happen that could have shown some real character growth and connection but instead add more to the discomfort, and Kate fails to stand up for herself where it matters or could have made a real difference. Sadly the HEA is just too convenient and too predictable an ending. It's easy to want to want to sweep everything under the carpet when you think the worst has happened and you realise that life is precious, but it failed to sweep away the negativity in the book.

Well I got it for free on Kindle..

I found it somewhat unbeliveable that she was so cool with the kidnapping thing, I had been scared out of my mind..
First of it would never happen i real life that anyone would try that kind of joke!!

Then the writing was way to jumpy and unstructured - suddenly we were in his head for like 6 lines and then right back into hers..

Overall a cute romance, but the structure of the book is way of..

So much drama - not nearly enough resolution.

.5 star ( the beginning was enticing ). But the actual romance was non existent as the characters stopped talking to each other not even hall way into the book- literally. I just don't believe that these two could have a HEA.... Shame.

It was free on kindle though....

Free Kindle book, glad I didn't pay for it.
Story line would've been ok, but couldn't stand the main character....what a bitch! Not quite sure how they ended up madly in love with each other when for most of the book they couldn't stand each other and avoided each other at all costs (mostly due to Kate's bitchiness).

It was ok. It started out with great promise and it did have a lot of drama, but after a while it was just not drama in a good way. It also could have been fleshed out alittle more with more description towards the end.

Had this book on my books to read for awhile and finally got the chance to read it.

I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed it. You could tell that the things her father had done was really messing with her relationship. To still be a virgin at twenty-eight. There had to be a reason for that.

This book is not predictable, which I really appreciated. It has a fast pace and can change context abruptly and without warning, especially early on. About half-way through the book there is a dramatic shift that is never really explained. And it doesn't necessarily end the way you would expect.
