I wanted to like this book, but I there were just too many things about it that bothered me.
First, Kate is kidnapped and left without any means of an escape or calling for help in a one-room cabin by Steve's brother as a joke (for his brother). Upon Steve's rescue of her, she's more upset about her leg falling asleep than the fact that she's been kidnapped and left for days without any hint of what will happen. It was just "off" to me. Kate is depicted in alternating forms as a strong, independent woman and a completely naive, even silly young woman. Steve's character alternates between the understanding and doting lover and the cruel, even violent cad. The contradictions are done without nuance and sophistication; the reader never knows which to expect in any situation. I found the rape of Kate on her wedding night particularly troublesome. Her reaction could be attributed to shock and rang true of a realistic situation but was completely at odds (in my view) with the relationship the couple had leading up to that point. The relationship declines and declines as the story moves on, with each character understanding that they are destroying what might have been a solid partnership but neither willing or able to stop it. The story ends with the birth of their child being immediately followed by Steve's being held hostage for some period (the length of time isn't clear) and upon his return all is forgiven and love conquers all. Three-quarters of the story is about how they can't seem to work it out and only hurt each other more. Kate's difficulty in living with Steve is treated with more realism than her experience as a single parent to a newborn with a missing spouse. Then within ten pages, all is solved and well. It was just a confusing and difficult story for me.
While I feel that much of the story was realistic in that I'm sure situations like this do occur in everyday life - unexpected pregnancy, marriage of convenience, power struggles within said marriage of convenience, domestic violence and how each party handles it, jealousy, the strains pregnancy places on a couple, etc. - this is not what I want to read about in a romance novel. It felt to raw, especially when the conflict and inability to communicate just disappears for the happy ending.
All in all, it just wasn't for me.
