Magnificent portrait of the history of melancholy, and the way in which melancholy is represented over and over again. Karin Johannisson identifies nine types of melancholy, including fatigue, fugue (a compulsive disorder to run away), depression, anxiety, ennui etc.. All of a sudden your own nightmares and terriying ideas are not so exclusive anymore, which is a total relief. The author also indicates that each century has its own way of interpreting 'melancholy', though the concept is equally ...more

Aikamoinen ja mielenkiintoinen aikamatka melankolian historiaan. Sama "tauti", vaan eri nimitys eri aikoina.

Tavattoman kiinnostava kirja, joka tarkastelee melankolian ilmentymistä kautta aikojen; miten kulttuuri vaikuttaa tunteisiin... Pitää lukea uudestaan, nyt luin vaan ihmetellen kaikkea; menneiden aikojen outoja tapoja.

“The melancholy can be black as suicide, gray as depression, white as emptiness and blue as mood. It may appear as fear, boredom, longing, fatigue, emptiness, anxiety, or a forced search for pleasure. However, there is always a lack or loss that lies beneath.” 2 likes
