Hong Kong Unveiled: A Journey of Discovery Through the Hidden World of Chinese Customs and Culture

It is a constant source of surprise that Chinese people can speak of the habits and beliefs of all their millions of compatriots with such certainty that they are right – but generally they are. Thousands of years of cultural development have developed an enormous set of understandings that tend to be a total mystery to outsiders. This book lifts the veil, and helps you make the most of your time in China or Hong Kong.

Great book to get to know the quirks of Hong Kong culture, but found it weird that some topics were omitted entirely (e.g. Helpers, maids), while others were covered extensively (e.g. Prostitution). Some chapters were more like lists and not very engaging. Overall, an interesting and helpful book.

I really enjoyed this, although I found the system used to transliterate the Cantonese odd. I've lived here in Hong Kong for 7 years now, and if I had to put the Cantonese words and phrases I know into English letters, they would look very different! For example, "Guung hay fart choy" sounds more like "Kung Hay Fat Choy" (not "fart") to me.
