Dispite its profound theme and premise, the resolution and 'twists' are quite shallow. Indeed there are several scenes that would trigger reader's emotions, but, in general, characters are not thoroughly developed so the motive of each character doesn't successfully make them realistic, especially Shizuto's and Sakuya's. Their motives are explained through different characters' eyes again and again, but it made me feel like I'm seeing author's struggle and uncertainty through these frequent and repetitious explanations.
Shizuto became depressed by the deaths of people around him and took a journey to visit places where people died and pray for them. While he's away for some years, his mother is dying of cancer. I cannot empathize with him nor see his actions as honorable as the author intended. He should care about his living family instead of dead strangers.
