About the author

B. Jeyamohan (also credited as Jayamohan) is one of the most influential contemporary, Tamil and Malayalam writer and literary critic from Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

He entered the world of Tamil literature in the 1990s, Jeyamohan has had impacted the Tamil literary landscape as it emerged from the post-modern phase. His best-known and critically acclaimed work is Vishnupuram, a deeply layered fantasy set as a quest through various schools of Indian philosophy and mythology. His other well-known novels include Rubber, Pin Thodarum Nizhalin Kural, Kanyakumari, Kaadu, Pani Manithan, Eazhaam Ulagam, and Kotravai. His writing is heavily influenced by the works of humanitarian thinkers Leo Tolstoy and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Drawing on the strength of his life experiences and extensive travel around India, Jeyamohan is able to re-examine and interpret the essence of India's rich literary and classical traditions.

அப்பா முதலில் வழங்கல் துறையில் வேலைபார்த்தார். பின் பத்திரப்பதிவுத்துறையில் எழுத்தராக வேலைபார்த்து ஓய்வு பெற்றார். அவரது பணிக்காலத்தில் பெரும்பகுதி அருமனை பத்திரப்பதிவு அலுவலகத்தில் கழிந்தது. 1984ல் தன் அறுபத்தி ஒன்றாம் வயதில் தற்கொலை செய்துகொண்டார்.

In this beautiful collection Jeyamohan explores love, especially they capture the moment the love is expressed, the emotional pinnacle in the relationship. They don't sesrch for narrowness or petty emotions, they explore the emotional high that is possible to humans through love.

In Kolaisoru we see a talkative young girl radically altered after being beaten up by power. Does she get altered completely ? She is asked to deliver food to a rebel prisonner before he had to be executed. The moments leading upto the climax, the supreme love that blossoms between them and how she decides to keep his memory lifelong is beautiful in its simplicity.

Karuvali is beautiful in its simplicity, the story happens in a dubbing theatre. The director is moved by the simplicity of the girl and he repeatedly asks her to tell loving dialogues, those which are not relevant to the scenes. Especially asking her to repeat phrases with 'chinnakutty' in it. The director is kindled with his mothers memory. In tue moment she acknowledges his love the story ends. Remarkably subtle this story is written with so much subtelty and care.

In suvai we see a remarkable blossoming of love between a manager and newly appointed girl. He is a man charactersized by remarkable authority, days of his spent in rational application of managerial principles. Tge first thing he notices in her is her impoverished status. The very ood dresses she wears, the rubber jewelry, the rubber slipper, tye curd rice thst she brings. He keeps noticing her at somepoint his memory of her is ever existing. Even at this point is he in love or its a mere curiosity one could never say. Oyr minds play thousand games with us when in love. A girl who is quite unremarkable seems to have been transformed into something else in his mind. The ending is breathtaking when he decides to share his lunch, first its expressed as a charity, then whe he chides her to have his food she accepts his love, poetic.
In a similar vein the story prize is between a girl who sells curd and wood artisan. The story is quite remarkable exposition on art and tye process of artist itself. She asks him from where does so many things come from wood, he says its from his imagination. She explains her hardship yet remarkably strong willed, he is smitten by her beauty especially her dark color. They are playing a game, finally she asks him to make something for her from wood something she loves. The story ends with he offers her, and the moment of love.

For me the pick of the collection is Perungai, how the elephant helps beautifully in expressing the dormant love in the Shepherd boy's heart towards his masters daughter. In this the elephant represents the divine, the story is like how the divine always intervenes or doesnt let go of someone who is completely dedicated to it. The elephant is also art or any passion towards which one dedicates towards.

Packed with so much more this beautiful collection is another remarkable one from the literary master, he is infact one blessed by the Perungai.

பன்னிரு கதைகள் கொண்ட இச்சிறுகதை தொகுப்பில் பெருங்கை, கல்குருத்து, கள்வன் ஆகிய மூன்று சிறுகதைகள் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்திருந்தது. குறிப்பாக பெருங்கை மற்றும் கல்குருத்து சிறுகதைகளை தொடர்ந்து இருமுறை படித்துச் சுவைத்தேன்.

ஜெயின் மற்ற கதைகளில் இல்லாத எளிமை இதில் கைகூடியிருக்கிறது. ஜெயின் கதைகளில் பொதுவாக உள்ள அலையலையென விரியும் உள்மடிப்புகள், எதிர்பாராத நுட்பங்கள் ஏதும் இல்லை. இந்த மனநிலையோடு இந்த கதைகளைப் படிப்பது அவசியம். இது எளிய கதைகள் என்று ஜெ முன்னுரையில் சொல்லி இருந்தாலும் முதல் கதையை வாசித்தவுடன் குழம்பிப் போனேன். இது ஜெ கதை போல் இல்லையே. ஜெ அப்படியெல்லாம் நினைத்தாலும் எளிய கதைகளை எழுத முடியாது அவரையும் தாண்டி சில உள்மடிப்புகள் இருக்கும் என்று ஒரு நம்பிக்கை. உடனே ஒரு வேளை எனக்குத் தான் கதையின் உள்மடிப்புகள் புரியவில்லையா என்று என் வாசிப்பின் மேல் கோபம் வந்தது. புத்தகத்தைத் தூக்கி வைத்துவிட்டேன். புத்தகத்தைத் திருப்பிப் படிப்பதை நினைக்கவே எரிச்சலாக இருந்தது. பின் முதல் கதையை மீண்டும் படிக்க வேண்டாம். இரண்டாம் கதையான "கருவாலி" இருந்து தொடங்குவோம் என்று முயன்றேன். கருவாலி கதை விறுவிறுப்பாகச் செல்லும் போது காதல் தோன்றும் ஒரு கணத்தில் சட்டென முடிந்துவிட்டது. ஒரு கணம் ஒரு குறிப்புணர்த்தல் மட்டும் தான். இந்த தொகுப்பின் கதைகள் எல்லாம் அப்படி காதலில் கணத்தைத் தான் சொல்லிச் செல்கிறது.

இருவருக்குள் காதல் எப்படித் தோன்றுகிறது என்பது எப்போதும் யாராலும் புரிந்து கொள்ளமுடியாத விந்தைதான். ஒரு கணம் அவ்வளவு தான். அதற்கும் தர்க்கத்துக்கு எந்த தொடர்பும் இல்லை. காதல் தோன்றிய பின் நாம் அதைத் தர்க்கத்தை வைத்து விளக்கிக் கொள்கிறோம். காதலில் ரகசியங்களை, தவிப்புகளை, பாவனைகளை, பரவசங்களை நுண்மையாகச் சுட்டி செல்லும் கதைகள் இவை. இந்த சிறுகதை தொகுதி ஒரு ஒரு மயிலிறகின் வருடல். ஒரு இனிமையான கனவு கண்ட நிறைவு.

“மண்ணில பொறந்தவங்களுக்கு தெய்வம் தம்புரான் போட்ட ஒரு உத்தரவுண்டு. நான் அதையாக்கும் சட்டமா நினைச்சுக்கிடுயது...”. ஒவ்வொரு கதையிலும் ஜெ. நெகிழ வைக்கிறார், அல்லது உள்ளிருந்து நாம் அறியாத ஒரு இடத்தை தொடுகிறார்.
