About the author

Prof. David C.A. Shotter is an emeritus researcher at the University of Lancaster.

He publishes mainly on Roman era Britain, with a particular interest on Northern Britain. In 2007 he appeared on Channel 4's Time Team as an expert on the Roman period, and then in 2014 he was one of the experts in the Rome in the Lakes episode of Walking Through History.

Really quick read, and gives a pretty decent overview of key points in Augustus Caesar's career. It doesn't look at his personal life so much, but really does provide the reader with a decent idea of political Rome during his lifetime.

Only a marginally more interesting read than a textbook. It is as much the general political developments that occurred throughout his rule as it is about Augustus himself.
So don't expect to feel like you know the man once you've finished the book.

Augustus Caesar, recunoscut ca fiind primul împărat roman, s-a născut Gaius Octavius Thurinus la 37 de ani după Julius Caesar. Oamenii l-au numit și Octavianus, pentru a-l identifica mai ușor, lucru de care se pare că împăratul nu era prea încântat. După ce i-a înfrânt pe Cleopatra și pe Marc Antoniu în bătălia navală de la Actium, a insistat să fie numit și Augustus. După ce a fondat Templul lui Caesar, a primit și numele de Fiul Divinului, dar asta e cu totul altă poveste. Ajuns la conducere, sarcinile sale s-au dovedit a fi deosebit de grele în absolut toate domeniile: economic, social, politic, militar și familial. A avut o domnie destul de lungă pentru acele vremuri și a rămas în istorie ca unul dintre „împărații buni”.
Din păcate, opera acestui profesor britanic acoperă mai mult aspectele economice cu care s-a confruntat Octavianus, precum și reformele pe care le-a facilitat. Sunt menționate bătăliile, organizarea provinciilor, modernizarea capitalei romane, dar mai mult trecător. Oricum, cartea este de mici dimensiuni, mai mult o teză de master/doctorat sau un articol mai serios documentat pe un site de profil decât o lucrare academică profesională. Nu că i-ar lipsi profesionalismul: cititorul amator de istorii romane se presupune că are suficiente cunoștine cât să navigheze arbore genealogice complicate ale împăraților Romei, precum și diferențele dintre optimates, princeps și equites. Nici stilul autorului nu ajută prea mult lectura: pedant, tranșant, academic, auster și prăfuit. Îmi imaginez că trebuie să existe și opere mai facile pentru a introduce pe cineva în istoria Imperiului Roman timpuriu.
