Dear old Sir Arthur Bryant, Churchill's favourite historian, is on fine form in this lengthy but always gripping study. There are reams of direct quotation from the writings of others, but as the extracts are always judiciously chosen and usually from obscure sources, this matters not. I suppose if you have a copy of Sir Harry Smith's autobiography you might not want to read a lot of him all over again, but then again, who could fail to be moved by the extraordinary romance of his rescue of the ...more
