The title "a Field Guide" seems a bit of an exaggeration, but at the very beginning of the book Rifkind does explain and show various styles of modern and contemporary architecture. Most of the book however covers architecturally significant public buildings. All the photos are in black and white which might discourage some readers, however it really allows the viewer to focus on the architecture. There is little in this book for people interested in private homes.
