His roommate turns out to be a closeted homosexual and all the good-looking girls in the dorm are interested in somebody else. When the girl of his dreams, who wanting nothing to do with him, joins the school baseball team, it inspires Bud to join, too, in an effort to prove to her she's all wrong about him.

This book was really disappointing. I mean, it could have been good, but... No. The art isn't bad! It manages to be ridiculous when it's called called for, and dramatic when it suits the mood. It's got decently clean lines nice contrast. It just feels gratuitous as all hell.

Seriously. I've read books twice as explicit and didn't feel half as scummy as I did reading this one. I think it's because one of the recurring gags is "LOL TITS AND PERVERTS ARE HILARIOUS LOOK AT ALL OF THIS SWEET PERVO-VISION WE BROUGHT YOU!" and that's... No. Seriously, this is something that actively annoys me (especially when it's combined with poses that physically couldn't work and "Here's a picture of the main cast fully clothed - except for the girls!" See also: the cover.) and turns me off books at the speed of light. I don't find it funny.

It's disappointing though because when it's not being gross, the story's not that bad. It's a lot better when it's focusing on the sports-related shenanigans and Bud being SERIOUS. When he's having sweet moments with his family or being a baseball wizard, it's actually okay! When he's got something to prove with baseball, it's pretty dramatic and fun! However, I really don't care about the romance aspects or the "OMG you have a girl on your team I DEMAND YOU REPLACE HER WITH MY LESS COMPETENT BFF!" plot point, and some of the humour just goes right over my head (for example, the two team members who struggle with english feels like a pop culture reference that I'm just not getting.).

Basically when it's good, it's pretty okay; but when it's bad, it's bad in all of the ways that get on my wick.

Chuck Austen doesn't write American-style comics very well. Whatever possessed me to think he'd be any better at writing a manga-influenced one? This is a typical Austen T&A fest, waiting to be used by an angry parent as an excuse to get a poor librarian in trouble. Then again, the librarian who bought this with his or her funding allocation *should* be in trouble.

The plot: A horny kid gets ready to go to college with his dopey friend and roommate, stares at girls, gets hit a lot, and has a thing for the only over-18 woman (oh god, tell me the rest were supposed to be 18) other than his mom who doesn't show off her tits at some point. I think there may also be baseball, too, but I refuse to go back and look.

Otsuka does draw pretty naked women, though, which is the only redeeming feature of this big piece of crap. (Library, 12/06)

Oh! I remember when I got this clearly...I thought it's a manga-mangaXD but well the thing that the story is written by an american it really gives a story a nother "feels". I liked it though, cause I laughed hard at some parts expecially with my friends when I brought this manga with me to school...oh man..the laughs XDDD
For one of my first mangas, which I bought it always be special in a way...

You know ... I agree with another reviews comments on volume 2 of this series. It's like American Pie meets any number of baseball movies. It's actually a really fun read, and too bad Austen never really got to finish it.
