Starting in 1932, Margaret Brundage, wife of leftist revolutionary Slim Brundage -- who she met at the wildly-bohemian Dil Pickle Club during the Chicago Renaissance -- forever changed the look of Fantasy and Horror with her alluring, sensationalistic covers for the legendary pulp magazine, Weird Tales.

Brundage, whose art contemporaries include Virgil Finlay and Hannes Bo

Brundage's work is, of course, gorgeous. The size and quality of the book's print make it worth the buy just to have the images. The writing and editing... not so much. There are numerous repeats, typos, and editorial mistakes, and a good portion of the bio spends far too much time discussing her husband and those she associated with. Seems to continue to overlook her, essentially, even while her images are the only reason to buy the book. ...more

Excellent art and biography of this civil rights activist Weird Tales pulp cover artist. Very highly recommended.

The art reproduced in this volume is a must-see for any fan of Weird Tales's Great Depression-era publications, and the collection of short essays, articles and interviews edited by Mr. Korshak is worthwhile reading for such fans as well. Had the book contained only Ms. Brundage's dazzling images and Mr. Korshak's biographical notes about her, I would've given the book a 5-star rating. However, its second half contains a long essay article by David Spurlock that seeks to burnish the reputation o ...more

As a fan of old pulp fiction covers this book is an absolute delight. Nice full page layouts of all the covers Brundage did for Weird Tales and more. What’s impressive to me is how fantastical her work was. She was creating these covers on pure imagination and knew that the more outrageous the cover the more the public loved it. Thank you Brundage. There are some brief facts about her as well dispersed throughout the book. Also, being a native of the Chicagoland I enjoyed reading information abo ...more

Larger and higher quality prints of her work than other books I've seen.

Includes the Weird Tales covers as well as the original artwork for several of them. Also includes samples of her earlier and later work; paintings and sketches. Lots of interesting biographical material as well. She was the first female pin-up artist, first pulp cover artist and still widely recognized as one of the best of her era. She was also a proponent of better working conditions, racial equality, gender equality, and

The art work in this book is gorgeous. The reproductions of Margaret Brundage's beautiful covers from Weird Tales magazine are stunning and makes this book easily worth picking up.

The biography is a mixed bag. Since there is very little first primary resources about Margaret there is a lot of conjecture mixed with way to much filler to set the mood of the time and settings. The biography part of this books could have reduced greatly in size.

Lavishly illustrated with color reproductions & many articles & histories about Brundage & her work. Like many of the best people involved in pulp, Brundage was active in civil rights & progressive movements. She was a central figure in Chicago’s anarchist/Wobbly/hobo scene in the 1920s and went on to do civil rights work with the South Side Community Art Center, working alongside Gwendolyn Brooks, Arna Bontemps & Richard Wright.

Margaret Brundage, Queen of the Pulps. Thomas Kinkade but with provocative paintings.

She was in many ways a "stay at home mom" yet illustrating hundred of lurid painting decades before the gothic fetish craze. She was an activist and married to an activist. Their lives involved (Hobo)Bohemia, Pin-Ups/Pulp Art, the Beats, Black Pride/Rights, McCarthy, etc
