I've read and enjoyed a couple of her novels, but this one drew me in more quickly and made me laugh out loud throughout. These are novels that I have to feel in the mood to read, but when I am is difficult not to become tremendously enthusiastic: her prose style and the worlds and characters she creates are so unique. Quite an interesting book, first published in 1944. What is fascinating is that there if virtually no exposition or narrative; the novel is almost entirely dialogue between the characters. You form opinions of the characters through their words and how they interact with others. The narrator never says, "She's lied" or "He was a jealous person;" you figure those things out on your own. I can see how it wouldn't be to everyone's taste but I really got a kick out of it.

Dame Ivy Compton-Burnett, DBE was an English novelist, published (in the original hardback editions) as I. Compton-Burnett. She was awarded the 1955 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for her novel Mother and Son.
