Redeeming Estrogen (review of Holy Estrogen by Carol McLeod)

Holy Estrogen by Carol McLeod truly lives up to the promise on the cover, "Every Woman's Guide to Making Her Emotions the Holiest Part of Her." The book oozes wisdom for living up to high standards to bless relationships instead of living down to base standards that will curse relationships. Scripture forms the supporting framework for this book. I found the message of this book to be relevant when considering the variety of emotional outbursts I have seen in women over my sixty years of life. This book spouts truth on every page.

The only part of the book that gave me momentary hesitattion was the concept presented in the book about the difference between spirit and soul. I mostly think of the soul, as it was described in the book, as being the flesh. Adjusting my concept of the word was only a momentary distraction.

I highly recommend this book to all ladies who want to work toward better understanding and control of emotions. The world would be a kinder and gentler environment if more women would read and apply this book to their lives. Men can read it for better understanding of women in their lives and to help support the women as they work toward holy transformation.

I received this book from the wonderful folks at bookfun.org in exchange for reading the book and posting an honest review.

One of the hardest books to rate for me. I've appreciated the focus on worship and praise (along side the usual suspects of read-your-Bible-and-pray-everyday) as the antidote of "raging emotions". Also, the example of Esther Ahn Kim towards the very end was very inspiring. I found McLeod's the theology of soul and spirit to be questionable. I'd label it flesh and spirit. I didn't really get what I was expecting from this book but there were moments when I was genuinely and positively surprised by it.

Reflections:

"Many christians make the very same mistake as did our affluent farmer friend in the parable of Jesus. We continuously feed our soul and ration the nutrition of our spirit."

If you have been guilty of this, raise your hand. I know mine is raised high above my head at the moment. Guilty as charged! Carol points out that by feeding your soul more than your spirit, your soul will grow out of control. This helped me to realize how devestating the outcome could be if I don't nourish my spirit enough by feeding it the Word of God. Very eye-opening.

"However, a spirit that has known the strength and focus of a life lived wholeheartedly for christ will look at the past with this wisdom and peace, "I have not encountered one obstacle that hod has not used for His purposes. In every challenge and through every heartache, He has been with me.""

This quote really spoke to my heart. I am a testimony for this statement. No matter what I have been through in my life, God has carried me through to a victorious ending. This is such a powerful statement and really awakened my spirit to how truly Blessed I am.

"If you have a problem with fear and worry, I can tell you exactly where it care from! Women who have downloaded fear and worry onto their mental hard drive get their primary information from the devil himself. Ladies, let me be blunt here...you are listening to the wrong voice! You have bought the wrong newspaper! Put that gossip rag where it belongs...in the trashcan! You are accepting gifts from the wrong person! Change the channel! Press the mute button and open the Bible!"
Fear and worry...they can sure clutter your mind. I have struggled with both over the years and still do at times. Carol helped me to see they have no place in my life and only wear me down. Like dragging a suitcase full of baggage everywhere I go. If you're battling worry and fear, this section of Holy Estrogen will certainly help you win the battle.

"If I was a doctor, and I supposed that I am...I am a doctor of the soul, so let me write you a prescription for loneliness. Give to someone else at least 3 times a day. Your loneliness will be cured when you are more concerned about someone else's needs rather than your solitary life."

This is a tip I will definitely take with me wherever I go. I sometimes get the "blahs", as most people do. I enjoy giving as much as I can and love it when I manage to brighten someone's day. This helped me to realize that when I'm giving, in whatever way, my loneliness scatters. I'm so caught up in the other person's joy that I don't feel the loneliness. This is a great tip that can be applied to the lives of everyone.

Synopsis:

Holy Estrogen is full of advice on how to give yourself over to God so He can help you overcome the daily stumbling blocks in your life. It's very informative and Carol's tips are spot-on. I also found it brought out several of my emotions. I was very touched and thought of special times with my own dad when she told the story of working in the garden with her dad. And I laughed out loud when she told the story of her friend, Kathy, and how she handled a situation with a thoughtless driver. Bottom line, Holy Estrogen is a very helpful, scriptural based book that packs quite a punch. If you need help battling and reigning in your emotions this book can do just that. It's not just for women. Men can benefit from Carol's advice just as easily. I would recommend it to anyone who battles such emotions as anger, fear or loneliness.

My Review:

As women, we all know the emotional roller coaster our hormones play into our lives. Its no wonder why we have such a hard time controlling our emotions. In Carol McLeod's book, Holy Estrogen, the author explains that we need to let the Holy Spirit have control over all that dreaded estrogen monster doles out. Without Gods help we will NOT win this emotional battle.

It does not matter what emotion you have felt, whether it was fear, loneliness, anger, happiness, sadness, aloneness, enviousness, brokenness, abusive, abusiveness, disappointment, out-of-control, or so many more, you can find a chapter in this book to help you get through it; work it out with God’s help and overcome the problem. Each chapter also contains scripture to go along with the problem and fixing it.
I would recommend this to all women, you never know until you read this book if there is something in there for you yourself, or something you can use to help a friend or family member.
My favorite chapter was 10, Disappointments, Broken Hearts and Other Maladies of the Soul. It talks in there about not letting your disappointments turn into Broken Hearts, let the Holy Spirit guide you through your disappointment and turn it into something good. “If you can learn the secret of revealing the glory of God inside of you during the most difficult days of your life, you will become a woman of strength and valor.” This quote is also from Chapter 10.

An extremely thought provoking book!

This book takes a long, scriptural look at how God wants us to deal with the emotions that we all deal with. Carol looks at what type of emotional influencers we have to deal with from our past. She also explores the difference between the soul and the spirit of your inner person. Then she takes us on a journey to identify how Satan attacks women through their emotions.

I really liked the candid way that Carol addressed normal emotional struggles and the ups-and-downs that come through regular living. She includes many humorous stories from personal experience. Every piece of advice on how God wants things dealt with is solidly supported through the use of scripture. I highly recommend that all women who want to please God in their lives read this book. It would also be an excellent book for any man to read who wants to try and understand the struggles that the women in their lives go through.

Holy Estrogen
Holy Estrogen was written by Carol McLeod and published by Harrison House (2011). Carol McLeod is currently a radio host, Bible teacher and popular speaker at women’s conferences. She has written other books.

The author states that a woman’s emotions can be out of control, raw, and treacherous, but also recognizes that emotions are common parts of a woman’s life. McLeod makes it clear that that you cannot depend upon feelings and emotions and that you have to lean on the promises of God’s Word as your authority. She gives many practical strategies on how to handle your emotions. She also presents ways to grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ, feel the power of the Spirit, have a healthy spirit, and know how to deal with your emotions. In chapter 4, my favorite chapter, the author discusses the difference between the soul and the spirit. It was very enlightening.

The book is practical and a good resource to have on hand for men and women. I highly recommend this book. I received this book from Bookfun.org for my honest opinion and review.

This was such a true book. I really enjoyed her insights that were often times humorous and others I was grabbing my tissues. I laughed and cried but this book spoke truth. I was reading this book during a highly emotional time in my life and it did really help me keep my God given emotions and feelings in check (most of the time) even though they wanted to rage out of control and erupt like a volcanic explosion. This is a great book to be put on your keeper shelf to be reread time and time again to have the reminders that we can stay in control by having a healthy spirit. How we can have a healthy spirit is outlined in the book. This is a book I will have my daughters read as they grow into women. I received this book from bookfun.org and my opinions are my own.

Out of all of Carol's books, Holy Estrogen is hands down my favorite! If you are woman, it doesn't matter how young or old, this book is for you! I personally love when I can find a book that relates to all women, no matter their age or stage in life. And this book is absolutely that!

Are you constantly riding the emotional roller coaster powered by hormones, fluctuating attitudes, and the pressures of an ungodly world? Then Holy Estrogen is the book for you and your best friend and your mom and your daughter! Feel free to share this book with every woman you know! I promise there will be something within these pages for her.

Carol's bottom line is that our lives should be ruled by the Holy Spirit and His power, not our emotions and their changing tides!

I started reading this book expecting it to be a book about women's emotions but it was so much more. Carol Mcleod has written a book that will encourage every woman in not only their relationships but their walk with the Lord.
In this book it teaches us to not to react to our circumstances completely with our emotions but to "allow the Holy Spirit to empower us to respond like Jesus would". Cathy teaches that "our feelings are slippery and do not bring stability to our life" so to be careful in what we use to create our desires.
This definitely a book I will encourage others to read.

Holy Estrogen by Carol McLeod is a book that every woman should read. She deals with so many emotions that we go through each day and puts a positive look on them. Yes, we have so many different mood swings but we are wonderfully md and with Christ there isn’t anything we can’t do. Just by reading this book doesn’t mean that everything will turn out perfect for you, but Carol has shown us how we can use these emotional highs and lows to become a better person.

A delightfully and humorous book with a guide to help women understand every emotion you have ever had or can imagine. It is an encouraging book with insightful information as to why God gave women these emotions (estrogen) and how to become a less selfish person and more like Christ. A great read. Would recommend to both women and men.

I liked the book it is a good help for women struggling with many things in their lives. Like how Carol gives Biblical passages to back what the topic is. I believe with women there are lots of emotional things going on and the Bible shows us how to pass that and to be strong with out all the drug supplements. Good book for any woman to read young or old
