Gifts from Eykis : A Story of Self-Discovery

Rate this book
Bestselling inspirational author Wayne Dyer’s classic parable, with a powerful message for achieving happiness here on Earth, now and forever. How would an intelligent visitor from another planet react to life on Earth? Would we welcome that visitor's presence and views? Are we ready for such an open exchange? Weaving together science fiction, spirituality, and philosophy with wisdom, humor, and plain common sense, Dyer tells the story of two peaceful beings from different worlds who work together to enhance the well-being of all. The gifts that Eykis, an alien traveling from a distant, Earth-like planet, brings to the people of Earth help them see themselves in a new light, and compel them to rethink their negative actions. Her insightful offerings will move you to new emotions, new behaviors, and a new understanding of humankind's limitless possibilities.

Wayne Walter Dyer was an American self-help author and a motivational speaker. Dyer earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and Philosophy, a Master’s degree in Psychology and an Ed.D. in Guidance and Counseling at Wayne State University in 1970. Early in his career, he worked as a high school guidance counselor, and went on to run a successful private therapy practice. He became a popular professor of counselor education at St. John's University, where he was approached by a literary agent to put his ideas into book form. The result was his first book, Your Erroneous Zones (1976), one of the best-selling books of all time, with an estimated 100 million copies sold. This launched Dyer's career as a motivational speaker and self-help author, during which he published 20 more best-selling books and produced a number of popular specials for PBS. Influenced by thinkers such as Abraham H. Maslow and Albert Ellis, Dyer's early work focused on psychological themes such as motivation, self actualization and assertiveness. By the 1990s, the focus of his work had shifted to spirituality. Inspired by Swami Muktananda and New Thought, he promoted themes such as the "power of intention," collaborated with alternative medicine advocate Deepak Chopra on a number of projects, and was a frequent guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

I think it’s a good book. Written by a psychologist, it touches every area of psychology: organizational, social, educative and clinical, and their application in our everyday lives. The story is captivating, but at times it just focuses on what Eykis has to say to mankind and her dialogues become kinda boring. But the book actually makes you consider the thoughts you have and how they’re affecting you and your surroundings, so you conclude that the responsible for what happens in your life is just you.

I recommend it, but be patient on Eykis’ interventions, cuz they’re pretty extended.

I think it’s an excellent message and my rating it’s entirely based on that, but the delivery as a fiction novel it’s very weak. I love Dyer's writing and in my opinion this message would have been better shown if he just made it as he’s other books: a compendium of his ideas about the world and, in the case that he really needed to talk about Eykis, just mention her as "what if in other planet…" kind of thing. I say this bc there were moments where his narrative made things really repetitive and slow, also the characters didn't have any personality besides what they were talking about, and it was difficult to feel empathy for Eykis or the protagonist bc they felt just like robots (not like real people but just the voice of Dyer saying all what he wanted to say). To me it doesn't make sense the election of taking this messages and made it a fiction novel when you don’t know how to write fiction. Still, I know the most important thing about this book it’s Eykis gifts and I appreciate all the knowledge I have now thanks to it.

A thought provoking book ... A must read for couselors and physchology students. I would have to say that Dr Dyer presents sound philosophy but he is lacking in the romantic novel department, although I am sure he didn't mean for it to be a romantic novel. His falling in love with Eykis was awkward but the section on concepts of love were needed. I guess he saw no other way to convey them.

Interesting concept of how humans surround themselves with unreality. The book also deals with the seeds for changing yourself into a more authentic form of you. The science fiction section of traveling to another planet was necessary to the premise of finding someone out of this world who thought differently. However one did find it difficult to suspend logic for a bit. Otherwise the teachings in the book are amazing

I love Dr. Dyer's books and I appreciate this attempt at the "fiction writing" genre, but this story just didn't work for me. Some of the noteworthy things he had to say weren't really new ideas, and some were overly-simplified. I truly think that he could have used this story idea for a childrens book; in my humble opinion of course.

I wish everyone would read this. I have a feeling I'd get more, or something new out of it, if I were to re-read it.

I loved how he takes a subject people try to avoid dealing with themselves or hide from others and Wayne made it humorous, but deals with the issues.

Most of book was a little unusual but there were parts that made it think such as: " heaven is within you" ; " happiness is way"; or "no matter where you go there you are"

I read this book in 1990 (was published in 1983) decided to read again and it’s as relevant today as it was then. Should be required reading for everyone.

Lindo, simple…
Conversaciones que me llevaron a pensar sobre esos “errores de pensamiento” que tanto nos evitan disfrutar la vida.
Lo disfruté y lo agradecí!!

An interesting “outsider’s” look at the ways we torture ourselves as humans - guilt, jealousy, anxiety. It is all a choice. I have flagged many pages in here.

This is a fairly brief novel by Wayne Dyer about a man who meets Eykis, an alien. The man learns many things from Eykis who lives in a world very different from our own. In particular, emotions have adaptive functions and are never self-defeating. I read the book in two sittings. It was great! Even Albert Ellis, who severely criticized Dyer for not giving him enough credit in his first book, Your Erroneous Zones, told me he thought this book was very original.

I was honestly surprised at how good this book was. When I first picked it up, I said ….Dr. Dyer wrote a fiction book? It is really well written and you take away a lot of information to implement into your life. My favorite chapter is “The Secrets of the Universe”. It isn’t the usual self help book advice… it comes with a different way of looking at situations.

I read the Italian version of this book, published in 1984 and no existing on GR even by ISBN, now. Anyhow It was really good and I enjoyed it although it slowed down a bit toward the end and then the end itself was a bit abrupt in my opinion. Would love to read it over in its original language. It did inspire me and humor me as well.

Reminds me of the best parts of Walker Percy's "Lost in the Cosmos"

though this book contains it's own flaws, mostly in the section on religion, in my opinion, it is an excellent book with an excellent message that could have real impact if it's lessons were lived in the world.

This book was recommended to me by someone very important to me and if it wasn't that they provided an opportunity for discussion about it, I wouldn't have understood the point of it at all. It felt very amateur to me but I don't regret reading it.

I read this when it was first published. I seem to remember loving it; this time as I read it, it does not hold up well. I'd say even if you love, love, love Wayne Dyer. Skip this one.
Wished Fulfilled and The Power of Intention is your go-to book.

learnt some simple, important things from this book. The wasted energies behind Blame and worry. I could live on Uranus, instead of living in this sometimes anus.
