I thought was a great adventure story and thoroughly enjoyed it. Brain, the only surviving member of the Old Guard, a mercenary company. wakes up wounded and angry. He's angry because he hasn't joined his mates in the Hall of the Dead. All he wants now is death while taking revenge on the other mercenary company that killed his comrades. Through some twisted logic about honour and glory, he has a debt to pay to the raw recruits that saved him. He accepts to lead and train them, so he can go into ...more

Thoroughly enjoyable! The main character is easy to get behind. Not a perfect human but flawed in ways that make him attractive on many levels. The author pulled a Jack Williamson with his ending, but he did it as well as that old grand master in my opinion. I will definitely be moving on to the rest of the series.

Fast reading. Very cool. I can't help feeling there could have been more descriptions or more action but I really enjoyed the characters. It sometimes feels there are jumps. It is very character driven. Feels very much like Conan but without the batttle scenes. Will definitely read more from Freddie Silva. I did win this as a Goodreads Giveaway

We're was the battles

Well it was a good story an all. But for all the talk of wars an battles. I didn't get to read a one. The read of Brain, Death, Marshal an Baron Wolf was all political. He was great character to read on. Would of liked to seen him have at least one good fight under his belt. If it's politics you want to read them is it.
This is the 2nd book if have read from this author. He starts of strong but loses the story half way through. Don't think I do a 3rd.

Okay. I have to tell the truth. When I first saw this book, for some reason I had the notion it was about werewolves. You know, with the usual storyline of alpha males, fawning females trying to get next to the alpha, soul mates, pack fights, that sort of thing. Even after reading the blurb I still thought a werewolf might be in there somewhere. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good werewolf story but really wasn’t in the mood for one. Then I read the sample before buying, and boy, was I delightfull ...more
