Water in the Garden: A Complete Guide to the Design and Installation of Ponds, Fountains, Streams, and Waterfalls

Rate this book
Water has featured prominently in garden designs for thousands of years, hardly surprisingly - it can captivate the senses, creating visually stimulating light and movement and soothing, splashing, and bubbling sounds. In its many forms, water can be used as the focus of new gardens or to add an exciting fresh dimension to an existing one.

Encompassing every aspect of water in the garden, this beautiful - but also eminently practical - book is full of ideas for incorporating water into a garden design. Ponds, watercourses, waterfalls, fountains, and small water features - from pebble fountains to troughs - are illustrated with inspiring photographs, and their construction is explained in detailed text and, where applicable, step-by-step diagrams. There is also a section devoted to bridging water, using stepping-stones, timber decking, and islands, as well as a variety of bridges.

Definitely would recommend to anyone who has or wants a pond in their yard. We had a pretty one at our last house but they are so much work we decided not to try that again. Book is good though.

We bought a house with a small pond in back. We never had one before and had no idea how to take care of it and it looked terrible. I read this book because it has a section on wildlife ponds and I knew we had some salamanders in the yard and I think salamanders are really cool. I did also have a pond guy come out and tell us what needed to done to get the pond cleaned out. Then I read through the sections on pumps and plants and a couple others I hadn't read that closely before. I want this to be as low maintenance as possible so I thought I didn't want any plants, but I learned that having some will reduce maintenance by balancing the pond since we need to have fish to control mosquitoes. That's the one thing I think this book is missing is a discussion of mosquitoes. And maybe raccoons. So now we will have it professionally cleaned and add a plant or two and some mosquito-eating fish and a shelf and ramp the book recommends for attracting amphibians. I'm really excited about it!
