The Dogs...Barking is the gripping coming-of-age story of Jason Kelly: his childhood in a sleepy backwater Mexican border town in Texas, and his battle with the demons his upbringing instills in him.
As he grows into a man, he must first navigate the wild-eyed temptations of university life in the '60s. Then, his odyssey takes him to the raw power of New York City as he pur

The book is well written. One of the factors that I look for in a novel is its believability. To me, that means that a happy ending is not a must. One of the central themes of the book, that of self-abhorrence, is depicted in a realistic fashion, as is the fear that nothing is good enough. I felt that the description of life in small-town Texas border for 20-somethings was good. Other themes like selfimposed roadblocks and the voices of criticism and humiliation also were depicted in a realisti ...more

I won a copy of this book ok Goodreads.

I really hate having to write a bad review for a book - it feel like I'm making a personal attack on the author, but that's not at all my intention. If this had been a book I bought on my own, I would just skip writing a review, but I feel obligated since I won the book through this website. Please don't refrain from reading this novel based on my review alone.

I'm finding this to be a rather tedious read. While the storyline is interesting enough, the wri

Really enjoyed this story but it seemed like the author took a while to get to the point.

** I received this book for free through a first reads promotion.

I won this on a First Reads giveaway on Goodreads. What an interesting and unusual novel. From the start you are aware what is going to happen but it does not detract from enjoying the book.I must admit I found it quite sad in parts and I am sure there are a lot of people who can identify with Jason (the main character) and all of his self doubt and demons. It was refreshing to read such a well written book.I found it quite thought provoking. The reason I have not given it 5 stars because I found t ...more

Growing up on the Mexican border, Jason struggles from his earliest years with a hard, and often painful existence. His whole life he suffers from an incurable longing -some intangible pain and empty loneliness that keeps him on the outside looking in at a world of happiness that he can see, but never seem to achieve. The one thing he wants most out of life- acceptance and approval from his siblings- he knows he will never receive, as he suffers abuse from their hands, as well as the hands of Br ...more

THIS BOOK CAME TO ME AS A GOODREADS GIVEAWAY

All his life Jason has been tormented by a lack of self-confidence and a driving need to prove his worth to himself, his family and — kinda — the whole wide world.

Sadly, his crippling lack of confidence began with his family when he was a child living among siblings who constantly told him he was “a worthless piece of shit.”

Once he began school his torment was compounded by Mother Cornelia who assured him each of his naughty-little-boy wrongs would “p

I wish I had boned up on my SAT or GRE vocabulary before I picked up this read.

Notzon has limited the scope of his audience to those of us who enjoy word games and has cut off an entire audience just by his overwhelmingly complex vocabulary. The average reader won't slog through the first chapter, finding the need for a dictionary or a thesaurus to define the obscure word choices too cumbersome. Most readers want to lose themselves in a story, and the saddest thing about this book is that it's

I used to ply the acting trade but recently retired to devote myself full-time to writing. I've written several plays and my four novels, "The Dogs...Barking", "And Ye Shall Be As Gods", "The Id Paradox" and "Song for the Forsaken" are available in all mediums.
