I almost quit reading this after the 1st story. I keep reminding myself how long ago he lived but still find his blatant racism completely disgusting. If he lived in present day I’d be boycotting him, but since he’s long dead and I got the book for free, that wouldn’t do much good.
I decided to give it one more short story to see if they got better. They did, a little- most of them had kind of a mild twist or a moral, and the writing was good. It was interesting to see what life was like then. R

Here and Hereafter

Quite an intriguing collection of stories first published in 1911. Notwithstanding, there is no swearing (unless you count 'damn', which someone apologises for using), but the word 'slut' appears to describe one man's 7-year-old daughter!! Yes, I don't understand it either.

So, apart from that, this is a great collection of stories from a bygone era of writers and writing. Nott everything was written around sexual conquests, be it male or female doing the conquering. The collect
