Her death will reveal the truth.
Savannah awoke in the woods, her skin covered with cuts, blood dripping down her body. But she didn't know what happened. She didn't know why she was there, or why she was bleeding. And she couldn't figure out why she was standing mere feet from her corpse. Everyone thought that she ran away; that she finally hit rock bottom. But Savannah's death will reveal the truth. And some secrets are better left hidden.

Quick read that has been on my bookshelf for a while. Also written by an inkie, though I 'm not sure if I've interacted with the writer or not.

Plot:

I felt that overall the plot was headed in a good direction but it was too short to be well constructed. Some parts were, but overall it just wasn't. The story, as-is, just kind of feels a bit pointless and depressing. I was able to relate to Sav when it came to her mother, as I have similar experience, and while I did guess what happened about halfway in, the book ends too abruptly for you to comes to terms with it. I feel it would have made a pretty good full-length book, but it's just too short for all of the content.

Setting:

While the book is set in Florida, it isn't touched upon too much.

Characters:

I felt that Savannah's character wasn't nearly fleshed out enough. While I do understand the situation with her mother, and the tragic loss of her father, she didn't seem to have much of a character aside from her having an attitude. She felt hollow, and maybe that is how she was supposed to be after losing her father and having to start over somewhere new, but it made it a little harder to care about her. I felt bad for her, but not nearly as much as I feel that I should have.

Jeremy had potential as well but really just seemed like a switch--before Savannah goes missing he is basically his mother's doormat, and after, he suddenly realizes how dumb that is and is obsessed about finding Savannah but drags his feet when it comes to trying to figure out what happened to her.

Their mother was portrayed wonderfully for what she was, but I think it would have been interesting to at least have an idea why she would hate her daughter so much. Even if it were just little clues.

While the policemen aren't a big part of the book, I felt they were somewhat unrealistic. I haven't had a lot of dealings with police, but I'd think they would even be somewhat concerned if a girl had gone missing for a few days.

I didn't understand Steven's character at all and while his role is shown, it still confuses me on why he would be in that situation.

Relationships:

I liked the sibling relationship between Savannah and Jeremy, but they somehow felt more connected once Savannah was no longer in the picture, which was kind of weird.

The contrast between how Savannah and Jeremy acted toward/were treated by their mother was interesting, though I would have liked to see some kind of hint as to why she hates Savannah so much or likes Jeremy better.

Writing/Voice:

It wasn't bad, but I noticed a lot of the time that sentences were oddly worded, or that things seemed to be repeated and emphasized (how adult Jeremy was, for instance). I also felt that the writing could have used more details.

Ending:

I kind of guessed who was responsible for what happened to Savannah, but it happened very quickly and without any explanation, which makes the book end abruptly. It kind of reminded of me of an indie horror thriller movie or something.

Overall, I feel this had potential but was too short for all of the content. If this had been longer or a novel, I probably would have really liked it. 2.5 stars for the story alone.

This story gave me mixed feelings.

I guess I expected more of the novella based on the blurb. I knew it was a a book about things that already happened and, as we read, we are unveiling the mystery of Savannah's death and we accompany her on the journey to search for answers.

The story was woven in a way to make an impact regarding the main perpetrator of the killing as well as surprising the reader, however it didn't gave me that feeling at all when I finally reached that point because the build-up wasn't really good. I think it was quite predictable who was the criminal, but rather than knowing who it was, I think the story failed to create the right amount of suspense surrounding it to make it an astonishing discovery.

Overall, simple, entertaining and short read.
