Each morning, after my kids go off to school, I sit at my desk, look out my window, and dream of other places. The hours fly by as I make up people and places and drink way too much coffee.
Writing for Avon Inspire has truly been a dream come true. Being able to spend my days in my make-believe world of the Brenneman Bed and Breakfast is a true blessing. I have enjoyed getting to know more about the Amish culture and tapping into my faith as I show each character’s progression toward a personal relationship with our Lord.
Before becoming a full time writer, I taught elementary school in Texas, Arizona, and Colorado. A job transfer to Ohio led my husband to encourage me to finally give writing a try. After all, I had notebooks full of made up stories.
I’ll never forget that first book I typed in our unfinished basement. It was exciting to make up a story, but also very scary. I was also so embarrassed, sure someone would come out of the woodwork and point out that I wasn’t a ‘real’ writer. But I persevered, and sold my third manuscript.
Things have changed a bit. Now I have a real office of my own. (think old guest bedroom!) My walls are painted pink, and more than a couple of book covers decorate my walls. But my days are still the same. I wake up, dream about other people, and do my best to type out stories.

This is the third book in the Heart of a Hero Series, and I would recommend you read all of these books, but you can read this one without. Enough information is provided to allow you to know what is going on.
We start this book in 1874 West Texas, and if you think you have had a bad day, Rosemarie Cousin's would probably win. She has just lost her Father, and her Mother and Sister have left her. Then a man shows up to claim he owns her home and ranch....Scout Proffitt won the property in a card game from her Father.
You will feel sorry for Rosemarie right from the beginning. When she was eight and her brother was four, he drowned while she was watching him. Her family has blamed her ever after. Some family!
Scout Proffitt has lived his life as a gunslinger and has been on the run. When out of the blue an offer appears, he will not be able to turn down.
We follow along as other characters we have learned to love a reintroduced, and we wonder if all will survive, or will we say goodbye?
What happens between Rosemarie and Scout is sweet, and although unexpected, we hope for Rosemarie. Ah, she deserves to be happy, but can she find it with a gunslinger?
We find that a lot of these people need to find forgiveness, and the Lord surely leads them. Enjoy this great read...you won't be able to leave this one alone once you start.

This is book 3 (the final book) in The Heart of the Hero series. I enjoyed both book 1 and 2, but I have to say book 3 was definitely my favorite. The focus was on Scout Proffitt, along with 4 other men from the previous Walton outlaw gang. Each of them wanted a new life after the capture of the gang's leader, James Walton, but was it possible with the deeds each of them had committed as a member of a gang of outlaws in the growing western US.
I loved the growing relationship between Rosemarie and Scout. Both had pasts they didn't think they could leave behind, and it had made Rosemarie weak and beaten down and Scout powerful and controlling. Yet Scout showed so much honor and care towards Rosemarie that she had never received before which was an indication of what his heart and soul could become as he worked towards his redemption. While Rosemarie developed strength enough to believe in Scout and herself and to learn to trust again.
This story is about grace, hope and second chances for both the major and minor characters. The ending was a sweet surprise and totally unexpected. Wish this series hadn't come to an end as I really would like to see what happened to some of the characters in the story.

n "A Texan's Choice" Shelley Gray easily transported me back to the days when the west was still unsettled, when cattle rustlers and outlaws were a part of the western scene.
In 1874, in a tiny town in West Texas called Broken Promise we meet twenty year old Rosemarie Cousins. The Cousins are a dirt poor family living on the Bar C ranch, and while Rose's older sister is married, Rose has continued to live at home even though her mother and sister have never forgiven her for an accident that happened several years ago that took the life of her brother Pete.Her family has always made her feel like an outsider, making her feel as if she isn't worthy of anything. As Rose's father is dying Scout Proffitt, a famous gunslinger shows up saying he won the Bar C in a card game. Rose's mother decides to go live with her married daughter, and doesn't really care what happens to Rose. Scout agrees to let Rose stay for two weeks and help clean the house but when a few of the townsfolk show up casting aspersions on what is going on at the Bar C we see what kind of man Scout really is.
As a fan of historical fiction this book certainly fit the bill. Shelley Gray creates characters that are dealing with issues from their past that make them feel unworthy. Rose carries the burden of guilt for something that wasn't her fault, which makes her feel unworthy. Scout was a notorious gunslinger who had even had dime store novels written about him. In addition to Scout and Rose's story there is the secondary story that revolves around the fact that four outlaws have a chance to have the slate wiped clean, their records expunged, if only they can get Scout to ride with them one last time, only instead of being on the wrong side of the law for once they will be trying to rid an area of cattle rustlers. While the plot moved along at a pretty brisk pace, I found myself most interested in Rose and Scout's story, and how it progressed.
Overall, a nice historical western, with a bit of romance, and a nice inspirational message to make for an entertaining read.I did find one discrepancy in the plot, that bugged me a bit, but was really just a minor thing. While this book is the third in The Heart of a Hero series, I was able to read it as a stand alone work. I haven't read the first two in the series, but had no problems following the story. I will certainly be going back and reading the first two books in the series.

I loved the first two of this series, but this one was a little bit of a disappointment. It seemed like the whole thing was rushed and very little was set with the hero and heroine. There were many side scenes with minor characters that could have been left out, like the group of 4 guys who helped a woman who was having a baby. As well as Mile's love life problems. Mile's could have been given his own book. There were at least two spots where the wrong character was mentioned as well.(at least in the Nook version.)
The parts that had the hero and heroine were good, and I wished there was more.

My rating 4.25. This is a lovely story with a realistic setting in 1874 Texas and some darker characters. Scout Proffitt and Rosemarie are two damaged people who find love, worth and redemption.
Rosemarie lives with her family on a dirt-poor farm in Texas. Her father, a squanderer, is on his death bed with a room full holding death watch. Rosemarie is barely allowed in the room, much less near enough to say goodbye. But Rosemarie is used to being ignored and treated as less than worthless. Her family abandoned her emotionally when she was nine years old and it doesn’t matter how hard she might try to work, it will never be enough.
Scout Proffitt is a wanted man, a known killer. He wanted to follow in his big brother’s footsteps as a war hero when he ran away from home over 15 years ago. But living in the world without resources didn’t turn out as he planned. He thinks he may have found a way out when he won a farm in a bet a few months back. He shows up to find the farm is mostly dilapidated and dreary. The man he is claiming it from has just died.
Though stoic, Scout is inwardly dismayed when Rosemarie’s mother and sister pack their things and leave…leaving Rosemarie behind. She proposes that she clean and cook for him if he lets her stay. He agrees she can stay for two weeks.
Just as Scout and Rosemarie are trying to sort out a new living arrangement, four outlaws show up to seek Scout’s leadership for a job that promises them all a new start. Scout can’t turn down the opportunity so once again he rides off and Rosemarie is left alone.
Rosemarie is a mistreated soul who shows gumption and strength of character just in moving forward each day. Scout is a good man inside with a dark past that haunts him. I couldn’t help but root for them. The messages of love and redemption are shared through the story and not in any preachy way.
The story jumps a bit as the chapters move to introduce the four outlaws who eventually show up at the ranch. This was a little confusing but I was sure there would be a connection. I read this with my Ladies Book Club and we all noted that there were numerous typographical errors and several fact errors that should have been caught during editing. Although noticeable, it did not damage our enjoyment of the story.
The story reads easily and kept my attention. This is the third in the series and reads fine as a standalone but I was glad to realize that I had books one and two in my Kindle library. This is the second story I read by Ms. Gray and I am impressed by her versatility. I recommend this story to readers who enjoy western historical romance with a lovely message of redemption.

This took a while to flip for me. But it definitely finished well!
There was so much background that needed to be laid for Scout's complicated character, that he's in all three stories, even if he was only talked about by his siblings in the first book.
Rosemarie was both a shell of a woman, used to being hurt, like an abused dog, yet still searching for a scrap of love and willing to be kicked again in the off chance of a kind pet or soft word, and one of the strongest characters I've ever read about.
This author sure knows how to write deep characters!
The narration was again brilliant!
I highly recommend the entire series!

A good read and conclusion to the series. In Texas in 1874 - Scout Proffitt has become and outlaw but wishes he could change his life and become a man of honor like his brother. He wins a ranch in a poker game and decides to go claim it. When he gets there the previous owner has just died. So he gets the ranch and the man's daughter. Will Rosemarie figure out where to go from here now that her family has abandoned her? where will she go and what will she do? Will Scout kick her off the ranch or allow her to stay for a time? Will Scout be able to change his life?

This is the third in the Heart of a Hero Series. This is the story of Scout Proffitt. Long ago he gave up on ever being a hero like brother but now he thinks he may have a chance. He won the Circle C Ranch in a gambling game and he believes that this is his second chance. When he gets there he is stuck with Rosemarie who is left behind by her terrible mother and sister who want nothing to do with her. Rosemarie begs him fore a job cleaning, cooking doing anything to help him.

Basic story was good but too many side stories that could have been left out. The book would have been much better if the base story had been expanded and more detail and time had been spent with the two main characters and their growing relationship.

Read this not knowing it’s the third book in a series, but it doesn’t matter. You learn enough context from this book to understand its plot, but you will fail in love with Gray’s characters. A former outlaw with a heart of gold who rescued a woman in need and woos her heart—what’s not to love?

To say that Rosemary Colson was having a bad day was simply an understatement. Not only has her father died today, but on the heels of his funeral, an hired gun, Scout Proffitt shows up to notify the family that their farm belongs to him. He won it in a card game with their now deceased father. Seems like he never did anything right when it came to his family. Now just moments after burying her father, Rosemary watches as her mother and sister pack up what little belongings they have and ride off, leaving her behind. Her mothers parting words to her were that she made so many poor choice when it came to finding someone to marry her, that now she must make a way for herself. She has only one other choice and that's to find a way to convince Scout Proffitt to let her stay on the ranch to take care of the cooking and cleaning.
Little did Scout Proffitt realize how much he would get when he came to claim the land he had won against Ben Colson. He didn't want to spend time caring for another young woman when the last time he had done so it resulted in suicide when he couldn't offer her what she wanted. He didn't want to get involved in this situation again in caring for another, but then again, he couldn't just turn her away like her own mother did. He'd spent his whole life running and perhaps now with a chance to settle down and own a ranch, perhaps his old way of life is about to change. If only everyone else would believe that he is a changed man despite his legendary rumors that run contrary to those beliefs.
In book three of the Heart of a Hero Series by Shelley Gray, A Texan's Choice shows how difficult it is to leave our tainted pasts behind us and attempt to start over again. For both Scout and Rose, the scenarios are similar but different. Each of them is strong-willed when it comes to what they both believe is right for their lives but find themselves crossing paths more often than not. When a string of thefts in town come too close for comfort the past is about to reunited with the present and Scout is about to learn that sometimes people aren't willing to let the past be forgotten!

I've had the delight to read all the books in this delightful series and Christian Western Romances are a huge favorite genre for me. In each, there is a moral lesson that is overcome and the challenges of living the life on the western frontier make them all the more challenging, when guns are often used to resolve disputes and women can be treated as mere property. Times were hard, life was living fast and short but in the end, the goal is always achieved. It often makes you wonder how many times people wondered if there was a different way of dealing with things over the way life played out. Shelley gives the reader an idea that things weren't always easy and the choices had tough consequences in the end. I personally rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars.

Next to Regency, Historical Romance stories set in the American West are one of my favorite to read. I was very happy to get a chance to read A Texan’s Choice. I was intrigued to see how Gray would turn a gunslinger into a hero, and I was delighted with the results!
Rosemarie has always felt like an outsider in her own home. Her mother has never forgiven her for the death of her little brother. It was an accident, but that doesn’t matter. Now, her father was dead, and her mother was leaving her to go to live with her sister and brother-in-law, leaving her at the mercy of a killer.
Scout Proffit was a gunfighter who had run with the Walton Gang. Men feared him. He had come to claim the ranch he had won in a card game a couple of months back. What he found when he got there was a run down ranch and Rosemarie. With no place to go, Rosemarie asks if she can stay on at the ranch until she can find another place to go. Reluctantly, Scout agrees. When the town folks find out they are alone on the ranch, they insist that Scout and Rosemarie marry.
Deep down Scout is a decent man. He didn’t start out wanting to be a killer, but out of desperation he had become one, and he found he was good at it - real good. He was surprised how easy it was to shut off his feelings, and walk away from those he killed. When he realizes Rosemarie’s family is abandoning her, Scout feels a strong need to protect her. I love Scout and how he softens up to Rosemarie.
Another man who also ran with the Walton Gang is Russell Champion. Russell was tired of an outlaw’s life. He wanted to be able to walk the streets without worrying about the law coming after him. Then there is Miles Grant, owner of Circle Z ranch, he too struggled with low self-esteem. He worked hard to earn the trust of his hands at the ranch, but he still felt as if he needed to prove himself worthy of that trust and have their respect. When trouble comes to call, can these three men come together and break free of their pasts?
I liked Scout and Rosemarie's story. I love that whole damsel in distress and the strong, handsome,...gunslinger, in this case, who comes along and saves the day! I also enjoyed Mile's story. I really liked his feisty housekeeper, Annebeth. I liked how she bosses Miles around and always knows what's going on around town and at the ranch.
Even though, this is the third book of the series, and I have not read the first two, I didn’t feel as if I were missing anything. So, I would say this story can stand alone. But now I want to read A Texan’s Promise and A Texan’s Honor!

Rosemarie has always felt like an outsider in her own home. Her mother has never forgiven her for the death of her little brother. It was an accident, but that doesn’t matter. Now, her father was dead, and her mother was leaving her to go to live with her sister and brother-in-law, leaving her at the mercy of a killer.
Scout Proffit was a gunfighter who had run with the Walton Gang. Men feared him. He had come to claim the ranch he had won in a card game a couple of months back. What he found when he got there was a run down ranch and Rosemarie. With no place to go, Rosemarie asks if she can stay on at the ranch until she can find another place to go. Reluctantly, Scout agrees. When the town folks find out they are alone on the ranch, they insist that Scout and Rosemarie marry.
Deep down Scout is a decent man. He didn’t start out wanting to be a killer, but out of desperation he had become one, and he found he was good at it - real good. He was surprised how easy it was to shut off his feelings, and walk away from those he killed. When he realizes Rosemarie’s family is abandoning her, Scout feels a strong need to protect her. I love Scout and how he softens up to Rosemarie.
Another man who also ran with the Walton Gang is Russell Champion. Russell was tired of an outlaw’s life. He wanted to be able to walk the streets without worrying about the law coming after him. Then there is Miles Grant, owner of Circle Z ranch, he too struggled with low self-esteem. He worked hard to earn the trust of his hands at the ranch, but he still felt as if he needed to prove himself worthy of that trust and have their respect. When trouble comes to call, can these three men come together and break free of their pasts?

Ever since I finished book two in the series I have been looking forward to reading Scout’s story. I loved reading his story and seeing how he changed his life after the events of A Texan’s Honor (book 2). But I’m sorry to say this is my least favorite book in the series.

While I loved getting to know Scout more I was also a bit disappointed in this third book (and I assumed, final) book in the series. In a way it seemed like the author was trying to wrap up other people’s stories but then left you wondering what happens to them next.
At the beginning I was not expecting to hear about Russel or Miles so I was confused when the story started following them. By the middle I understood how they were tied to Scout’s story but in a way it felt like they were main characters as well but without their stories being concluded.
A theme in all three books is grace and second chances. Christ’s saving grace is not really explained and man’s depravity is glossed over. Throughout the last book and this book we are constantly told that Scout is a cold, grim killer; a man with no qualms about killing someone for money; a lethal shot feared throughout west; a man whose exploits have been told and exaggerated in dime novels. Yet he suddenly turns from all of that and people accept him and respect him. It’s hard to grasp, even though we’re told that something about him inspires trust.
I enjoyed Rosemarie’s story and how she was able to help Scout and he was able to help her. Although again while reading her story there is a scene that shows how her life has changed but there is no follow up to it.
If I knew that this series will continue I think I would have written a more positive review. However, since I have been under the impression that this is the last and I haven’t seen anything contrary wise, I must say I expected a better ending to the story and not so many lose ends. I think what bothers me the most is that they are not lose ends to the series, but rather lose ends just from this book.
If you’ve read book one and two, A Texan’s Promise and A Texan’s Honor, then you should certainly read this book. But don’t read this without having read the first two (or even just book two).

Rosemarie is the outcast of her family thanks to a horrible accident when she was a child that was not her fault. With her father dead and a scary yet rugged cowboy claiming her families rundown ranch she is left with no where to go. Her only hope is to work for this cowboy. What she does not plan on is him stealing her heart. Scout is leaving his old life behind and starting a new with a ranch he won in a card game. Though the ranch is in desperate need of repair he is content to make it his own. He did not expect the woman to become part of the deal but with her family’s desertion he offers to let her work for him. He soon finds himself carrying for her yet when his past comes to find him will be be able to let go and find the happiness he has always wanted?
This is the 3rd and final book in the Heart of a Hero series and I have to say I was a little disappointed. We started to get to know Scout in the 2nd book and I guess I expected a little more from this book.
What I liked: The book was well written and the characters likeable. I really wanted Rosemarie to find some happiness after the way her family treated her.
What I did not like: Both Scout and Rosemarie could have used some more depth. Scout was once a ruthless killer and now in this book he seems quite mellow. I know he was going from the fearless outlaw to the right side of the law rancher but I thought he could have been a little more exciting. Rosemarie could have used some backbone. I know her family treated her badly but it would have been nice to see her with a little more spunk. Also the added storyline with some of Scouts past gang members was odd. I was expecting a little more action at the climax of the story but it ended so quickly I had hoped for a little more excitement.
Over all this was an okay book but it almost seemed like the series was tied up to quickly that maybe a 4th book would have made this story stronger and gave some of the other characters more time to develop(like the brother of Vanessa from the first book). It still was a good book and the ending made me tear up I just wish it would have had a little more meat at the climax.

I can’t believe that I nearly let this book slip through my fingers; and so casually might I just add too!! It is one of the best romance books I have read. If you thought A Texans’ Promise was good (review available under Book Reviews), this one is so much better! Although it is the last book in the series and I have only read the first one, it is able to be a standalone read. A few character connections might be confusing, however storyline wise, none are connected. Nonetheless it is one I really encourage romance lovers to read!!! Don’t miss out and regret it later when you discover how captivating it is!

To me, she still seemed like a girl, however whenever Scout was in the picture, that all left my mind.
It is a heart-warming story on all levels! There was definitely adventure, however only fleetingly. I also loved hearing about Clayton and Vanessa, the antagonists in the first book A Texan’s Promise. Make sure to pick up this book. I know you won’t be disappointed.

I enjoyed A TEXAN’S PROMISE by Shelley Gray, but felt the flow of the book flip-flopped a lot, leaving room for the reader to become detached from the characters.
Rosemarie’s life has been a hard one. Blamed for her brother’s death at a young age, she’s been shunned by her family and feels her life has no value. When her father dies and her mother and sister abandon her, she has nothing but the broken down family ranch. That is, until she finds out her father lost their home in a card game with a ruthless gunslinger and he shows up to collect. Having nowhere to go, Rose offers to help Scout Proffitt with the ranch. She soon sees another side of the notorious gunman.
The only life Scout Proffitt has ever known is that of an outlaw. But when he wins some land and a homestead in a card game, he toys with the idea of hanging up his gun belt, and living out the rest of his life quietly and alone. When he gets to the Circle R Ranch, he finds a dysfunctional family more than willing to leave, not only their ranch behind, by Rosemarie as well.
The bond that grows between Rosemarie and Scout is instant, genuine, and deep. When Scout is presented with a dangerous opportunity that will garner him a pardon for his crimes, he knows he has to take it. Though the risks are high, the payoff is the miracle he needs so he can start a new life with Rosemarie.
The concept for A TEXAN’S PROMISE was a good one, but I felt the author fell short of execution. An intimate relationship is formed between Rose and Scout, but immediately they are torn apart. The storyline in regards to the rustlers was built up, but solved with very little suspense or excitement. And the back and forth between Rose and Scout’s story, and the characters from the previous books in the series, made the flow of the book choppy and disjointed. Though the book describes the story that will unfold between Rose and Scout, very little time was actually dedicated to their storyline.

As this is Christian fiction, their decisions are perhaps a little unrealistic, but Gray manages to make them all seem logical and consistent with what we expect from the characters. The Christian message is clear but not preachy. My main issue was that there were three distinct subplots, and while they all connected in the end, the number of characters did become confusing at times.
This is the third book in Shelley Gray’s The Heart of a Hero series, following A Texan’s Promise and A Texan’s Honor (both of which I have reviewed). I think that this series is best read in order, as the main characters in A Texan’s Choice featured prominently in the previous books. A nice historical romance.

I would give this book 3.5 stars if I could because I liked it better than the first book but not as much as the second one in the series. I enjoyed seeing how Scout's life continued after book 2 and how the storyline was all tied together from the first book. However, I felt like there were too many "main" characters in this one to thoroughly tell any of their stories and finish them up by the end of the book. Unless there is another book coming in this series, it left too many loose ends. Since Russell was one of the main characters, it would have been nice to see if his trip home had a happy ending. Also, Miles was also a main character and his story ended so abruptly that it was unbelievable. There was a reference from Scout to Rosemarie at the end about how he had carried her over the threshold the day they were married but the author failed to put that scene in the book. I had to go back and read the part about their wedding to be sure but I couldn't find it anywhere. Also, the story about the rustlers came to a disappointing climax. After the buildup about the other ranchers being murdered, Miles being beaten almost to death by them and the need to bring in professionals to take care of them, there was no action or a suspenseful moment at all. It probably doesn't sound like it from this review, but I did enjoy the series overall and will read future books from Shelley Gray in the future.

A Texan's Choice is a delightful read full of characters who overcome feelings of worthlessness and accept God's unfailing love and mercy. Rosemarie's circumstances are dire, and your heart breaks for the callous treatment she receives from her family and community. Scout is a man who has made bad choices but desires to start his life fresh. Both characters symbolize the ugliness and despair we have without Christ. As the characters begin to accept God's guidance and trust in His plan for them, we see that our hope lies with Jesus.
My only complaint about the book was the plot and romance felt rushed. Rosemarie and Scout spent two weeks in each other's company, developing a friendship (and budding romance) but none of this is relayed in the book. You end a paragraph and pick up two weeks later. As things develop later on the book, I found myself reading with disbelief that their love for each other could happen so quickly. I also think the adventure story included pushed the storyline along almost too quickly. It felt rather anticlimactic. There were several characters introduced in the story, but I found myself longing to skip those chapters and read ahead to Scout and Rosemarie's story. In fact, the addition of other characters seemed to muddle the story.

A Texan’s Choice is Scout Proffitt’s story. Out of all the Heart of a Hero series I think Scout is the one who is the most changed. He started to change in A Texan’s Promise. But after meeting Rosemarie in A Texan’s Choice he almost becomes a hero. Scout is Clayton’s baby brother ( A Texan’s Promise).
I enjoyed A Texan’s Choice more than I thought I would. To me it was a nice end to the Proffitt brother’s story. As the third book in the Heart of a Hero series I felt it was a nice end to the series, but I would still love to see books in the series. There were a few things in A Texan’s Choice that I wasn’t used to seeing or reading in Christian fiction but they were minor at least to me. Though others might not see it that way.
