I really enjoyed the first few chapters of this book, because of the heady mix of Gothic elements and a hair-raising evocation of the mobilization of the troops on the French side in August 1914. However, the story becomes increasingly far-fetched, and it's hard to remain interested in how the gallant Frenchman Paul Delroze is going to avenge his father and practically defeat the Kaiser all by himself. This novel has some historical interest in the sense that it was written in 1915, and is there ...more

Although this volume is listed as being in the Arsene Lupin series, it actually is not. Once I ceased wondering what the story had to do with Lupin, I really enjoyed it. Leblanc paints a wonderful tale of WWI in France, twined together with the mystery surrounding the murder of main character Paul's father.

I spent half the book looking for Lupin and then I finally checked the other reviews to find it's really not a part of that series at all (though his name is mentioned once). On the whole, it was an interesting mystery, and it does read similar to Lupin.
3.5 stars
This features an interesting, enterprising Frenchman's adventures on the front lines during 1915. He is matched against a German superspy—the woman of mystery—and must battle her for all he holds dear, both wife and country. The hero, Paul, is a Hentyesque Superman sort of hero, but a fun fellow to root for anyway. The villainess is clever and a hard one to beat, so it is a worthy foe for our extra-talented hero.

All in all, an interesting action-adventure set in the early days of WW1.

There wasn't any Arsene Lupin action in it but completely made up for it with the WWI story and the fervorous animosity between France and Germany, which must have dominated all minds at the time.

Reminded me of childhood adventure books.
The plot wasnt very logical and there was way too much French patriotism in the book.
