At times this was a difficult read. It isn’t so much a detective story but an insight into human psychology and the workings of the justice system.
It also starts with the premise that no crime has been committed and yet Maigret is certain that fact is likely to happen very soon.
It follows a visit to his office where the husband alleges that his wife is trying to poison him. He leaves before he provides Maigret with all the evidence. Only for the wife to show later that same day to express her
I enjoy reading the Maigret mystery series by Georges Simenon. Maigret Has Scruples is the 52nd book in the series. I haven't read the series in order, more as I've found books available for sale, but it doesn't seem to be necessary to read them in sequence.

Maigret has Scruples is a different sort of case for Inspector Maigret of the Paris police. Like most police officers, he's used to working on cases where the crime has already occurred. In this story, the possible suspects / victims come to

An unusual Maigret, almost a three-hander between Maigret and a husband and wife who each, unasked, come to talk to him, almost to plant the thought that they are in danger from the actions of the other. And their is the wife business partner, and the husbands sister-in-law in the mix too. But how can a possible future crime be investigated? And then, inevitably, there is a death to investigate ....

A gem.

Simenon wrote so many Maigret stories that, inevitably, he had to try and invent unusual characters and situations. Alas, this particular plot stretches credibility in a way I found deeply irritating. When are French police forces so underworked that they can spend time investigating crimes that haven't yet happened? This is yet another of Simenon's claustrophobic tales of married hell. Gisèle Marton is bored with her husband Xavier, France's leading specialist in toy trains, and prefers the ...more

Read this based on an article I recently read on the author Simenon and the fact that the books have recently been re-translated.
Quick simple read, nothing special.

This is an unusual story - instead of the usual discovery of a crime, Maigret starts to investigate a crime which is about to happen. Maigret's office is going through a slow period - 'calme plat'. Paris is grey and rainy, Simenon evokes a feeling of general discontent and rumination. Into this comes Xavier Marton. He says that his wife is going to kill him. Then an unsolicited visit from Mme Marton, who denies having any intention of killing her husband. Maigret has no jurisdiction over crimes ...more

Easy reading, blissfully devoid of gratuitous voyeuristic sex and violence. Maigret is a much nicer man than his creator and these whodunnits lack the nauseating snobbishness, antisemitism and prejudice of Christie or Sayers.
Maigret exists in his believable milieu, but neither war nor politics impinges on him, so he remains untarnished, just an honest respectable policeman with a happy marriage and the ability to understand the folly of humankind.

Maigret is visited by a man convinced his wife is trying to kill him. The wife visits later and explains that her husband is deluded and probably mad. Maigret is worried - no crime has been committed, no one is actually making a formal complaint, and his Prosecutor bosses are uninterested. Maigret studies some psychology books for help, talks to his doctor friend, and but gets no where. Eventually a corpse appears, and the crime is solved quickly - although the wife is an innocent party. Maigret ...more

It is the slow crime season in Paris so Maigret engages a man who comes in to ask if he, the man, is crazy or is his wife trying to kill him. Eventually our hero investigates him, his wife, and his wife's sister who lives with them. The inspector does a great deal of reflection on his responsibility versus police policy, after all, no crime has YET been committed. But eventually the man is poisoned and Maigret's amateur study of psychoanalysis and native intuition cracks the case.

On a recent Maigret spree, this was the least favourite of all the ones I had read. Pretty unusual plot and intricately plotted but somehow, I grew weary pretty soon 'cuz it was just too cynical even for my highly evolved tastes. 2 and a half but I'm gonna go with 3 'cuz Simenon makes even lacklustre fare readable thanks to his acute perception of human nature and a natural flair for writing.

Often when writing 100's of Maigret's adventures, it is quite reasonable that SImenon would fumble here and there. And this one is definitely so! With a rather strange story, weak characters and threads of unnecessary complications, this one is not Simenon's best.

A man turns up to see Maigret and says his wife is trying to kill him. Later that day the man’s wife turns up and tells Maigret about her concerns about her husband’s state of mind. No crime has been committed and no complaints are made. Officially there is no case, but Maigret has ‘scruples’ (as we know from the title) and he suspects there will be a crime...and he suspects one of the couple is mentally unstable. An intriguing premise or a slightly desperate attempt to liven up the format? It ...more

When I rate a book it is always a combination of how good a book I think it is, and how much I enjoyed reading it. This book is better than a "3" but I didn't enjoy it enough to give it a "4". That's probably because I didn't feel the same about the characters as Maigret did, and I found it a little depressing. But then what's happy about murder?

V českém vydáni z roku 1971 a v překladu Evy Outratové (to ještě vycházely knihy bez chyb a voněly tiskem). A kdo si ještě pamatuje v roli komisaře Jeana Gabina, nemůže tyhle knížky nečíst bez nostalgie.

In this book we have some personal titbits about Maigret's relationship with his wife. His wife is a source of wonder for me. Up to now I have never seen her get angry or grumpy so unlike Simenon's other characters she does not sound true as yet. In this book Maigret investigates a crime that is still to happen and we see it unfold before our eyes.

Of the Maigret series, I probably rate them all too high, because they are all engaging. This was one of the better ones, I think. The plot is complex enough to be puzzling, but not too contrived to disbelieve.

Simenon was one of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century, capable of writing 60 to 80 pages per day. His oeuvre includes nearly 200 novels, over 150 novellas, several autobiographical works, numerous articles, and scores of pulp novels written under more than two dozen pseudonyms. Altogether, about 550 million copies of his works have been printed.
