Hayle Coven #5

The Long Lost

Rate this book
A Dumont Witch

“That talk you promised me?” I hated myself for throwing it in Quaid’s face, but I couldn’t help myself, couldn’t. I’d waited for this moment, for him, we’d been through so much together it just wasn’t fair.

Wasn’t.

“Things are complicated now.” Quaid looked away from me, hands clenching. “I just wanted to let you know I was okay. That I found my family. And to tell you I’m happy.”

Syd’s worst fear has come true. Quaid found his family, the Dumont coven, and has chosen them over her. Not to be outdone, her friends are all going their separate ways, her solid normal foundation falling out from beneath her. When the Dumonts come for a visit, Syd’s family history unfolds, leading her to discover things that shake her beliefs about herself and those she loves while struggling to accept she’s lost her one true love.

I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.

Naw. I like being a nerdy girl :)

“The Long Lost”, book five in the Hayle Coven Series, is definite proof that the series is getting better with each book. Syd, now with her demon and a sidhe princess Shaylee inside her to strengthen her magically, is trying to enjoy the summer holidays which is proving to be anything but a holiday. Several of her friends are leaving town, an evil grudge bearing coven arrives and, as usual, her friends and family are being targeted. Assisted by her family and her pets/friends, Galleytrot, hound of the wild hunt, and her demon cat, Sassafras, she once again has to kick butt to save and protect those who are dear to her. Of course the cheer squad - never her friends - has to complicate matters.

Sydlynn Hayle is one of the most realistic main characters I have ever met in the numerous books I have read. A very normal rebellious teenager, she has moments of self pity, self doubt and a fierce protectiveness toward her friends and family. Her thoughts and inner dialogue are extremely natural but most of the time also hilariously funny. The author allows her characters to grow throughout the series thus keeping it fresh and believable within the paranormal setting. The witty dialogue, and especially Syd's smart mouth, had me smiling despite the nonstop action and suspense.

The title of the book is highly appropriate as old grudges from the Hayle coven's past surface and enemies thought to be dead, gone or powerless, reappear. With every new book in the series the author finds a new and refreshing story to tell. “The Long Lost” has a tender, bitter-sweet romantic twist for those who like a bit of romance in a story.

I won’t hesitate to recommend this book as an absolute must-read for readers of all ages. I would, however, advise that you read the first four books in the Hayle Coven series before you read this one. Believe me, you'll love them all! Thumbs up, five stars and many cheers for an excellent book and a wonderful author! (Ellen Fritz)

What is it about these books that make me keep coming back?? I literally can't stop reading them even when I want to! My husband has informed me that we just do not have the money for me to keep reading them considering each book is $5 and with how quickly I go through them, it's getting expensive. Dang you Syd and Quaid! Why do you have to be so addictive?!

This series is very addicting and the books only seem to be getting better. There are a few typos and mistakes in my version, but that didn't distract me from the story at all. And considering how much of a grammar nazi I can be, that's quite something.

In this fifth installment into the Hayle Coven series, Patti Larsen has truly outdone herself. The Long Lost is my absolute favorite so far. Right from the first page I felt like I was settling in with old friends. I love to see how far Syd has come, and how much she has grown. I am also loving her grandmother, who lost her crazy in the previous book, The Wild. She is funny and spunky and feisty, and bold. The only character missing is Meira, Syd's little sis, who is also a fav of mine.

The Long Lost picks up where The Wild left off, with Quaid off searching for his real family. His return is not at all what Syd had ever imagined. Standoffish and short, Quaid has found his family and has made the choice to join them. My heart was breaking for Syd. We girls remember that first breakup with the first love, and Syd's feelings and thoughts were so relatable. Being the fighter she is, Syd uses those feelings of hurt and anger to only make her stronger. As it turns out, Quaid's new family, the Dumonts, are long time Hayle enemies and the past is about to meet the present head on. As in true Patti Larsen style, the show down will be intense!

And we can't forget Syd's dad, who is still trying to find a way back to Demonicon and his frustration is taking its toll on the family. He plays a small role in The Long Lost and I am still hoping to learn more about his past and how he and Syd's mom found each other.

On top of the family feud with the Dumonts, feelings of betrayal by Quaid, and her dad about blowing the neighborhood to smithereens, Syd's friends are falling apart. Blood is moving to Europe with his family, Simon's parents are making him go to college, Alison is dealing with her drunk mother and new demons of her own, and Pain...well let's just say a huge secret is about to be blown wide open!

If you have not read any of the Hayle Coven series, you are truly missing out. The characters are interested, the plots exciting, and the writing descriptive. You will not be disappointed! Try them! Get hooked!! Then share the goodness with your book loving friends! Patti Larsen will quickly be one of your new favorite authors.

Oh…my…swearword! The tension in this one was unbreakable! Syd goes head on with a rival coven- The Dumonts- and I mean all out. The coven’s leader is known to be the sister of the coven leader of the Purity coven, who we know from previous books, challenged Syd’s Grandmother Ethpeal eighteen years ago. Purity coven lost, but so did Eptheal, by losing her mind and ending up in crazy land. It comes full circle when the Dumonts pay a visit, and it’s not a friendly one.

We get to see Quaid again (Yaay!) but, it’s not in the best of circumstances. I literally was hating on him from the way he treated Syd like she didn’t even exist. It was heartbreaking! Syd’s circle of friends is falling apart too, something that I felt was coming, but was hard to see play out. We see different sides of Pain, Allison, Page and Syd’s Uncle Frank. The havoc that the Dumonts cause while they are in town is devastating and I completely disliked each and every one of them to the core. One particular Dumont seems to have it in for Syd really bad and I hope she gets her just desserts for doing what she did to the Hayle coven.

I really liked the werewolves and I wonder if we’ll be getting more of them in future books. I hope so, it would be awesome! They were intriguing, mysterious and chock full of secrets.

It’s one of the darkest books of the series and I really enjoyed the way the characters have matured and changed…some for the better, some for way worse indeed. As always I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

I saw Ms. Larsen's first book Family Magic on BookBub.com and thought it sounded interesting, a which demon gal, different. That hooked me to buy the first story in the 20 book series. The writing and characters kept me hooked through the remaining 19 books. I rarely will buy Ebooks when they're $5.99 ... after Family Magic I didn't blink, just bought the next one and downloaded. I just had to see what was going to happen next. I really got invested in the story line, wanting to know what twists and turns would happen next. I don't know how many times I burst out laughing or cried my eyes out as the story unfolded (make sure you have a box of tissues for the last couple books you'll need them), or how often I didn't want to put the book down (but had to because my lunch hour was over) The characters were believable ... some you fell in love with, others you loved to hate. Anything I write about the story will give away what happens, but so you have to read them and see what happened. You won't be sorry you picked them up. I just wish there was more after book story, but there are more in the Hayle Coven universe. I read the books one after another, so this is the same review for all of them.

I'm 50 and enjoy young adult books because the lack of sex scenes in them You get to know the characters more in them. Although Syd does have sex in some of them, there is no description of it, just mentioned that she did have it and maybe waking up with her boyfriend. My niece is 14 and I'd give them to her to read.

this book kind of reminds me of the TV show "The Secret Circle" which is about a family of witches and their interactions with dark magic, demons and the daughter has dark and light inside her. Syd is unique as she has Sidhe, Demon and Witch personalities and they make her life very interesting. The story continues where Quaid has left to find his birth family and Syd is dealing with her best friend Allison who is still not talking to her, evil cheerleaders doing their best to make others feel miserable and of course trying not to get killed every other day. Syd has mother issues too as well as pining for her boyfriend who then turns up out of the blue and said he has found his family and they are coming to visit. Little did Syd know that the in laws are alittle on the dark side of magic and all is not what it seems. There is a secret agenda and everyone is keeping secrets from her and if she lives long enough, she may even find out what they are. A fun light hearted story that is pretty PG and would be okay for younger readers to follow.

Ms. Larsen has done it again! It is no secret that I am a huge Larsen and Hayle witch fan, but the Long Lost tore at my heartstrings. The coven finds themselves facing a real threat from the Durmonts. To make matters worse, the Durmonts are thralling witches and townspeople alike.

I loved the action between the covens and the peeks into more of Gram's past. Where this book really got me was through Sydlynn's heart. She faces a lot of emotional upheaval, especially with her paramour, Quaid.

I am woman enough to admit I got teary eyed more than once. Go, read now.....you will not be disappointed.

Finished, The Long Lost, Book Five in Patti Larsen's The Hayle Coven series, last night. Yes, I stayed up late to finish it, I couldn't sleep not knowing how Syd was going to get herself out of this latest mess and if she and Quaid were going to get back together again. The drama of it all, but seriously, this Young Adult Paranormal series is amazing, captivating and a total roller coaster ride from page one to finish! Dammit, Patti, I love your books!

Okay, so this was one of her best in the series yet. Her plots are getting more complicated, and I'm enjoying these books even more. I liked the introduction of an evil coven, and I liked that it wasn't resolved in one book. She has a lot more going on under the surface in this plot line. I can't wait for the next book. This one didn't tie up with a happy ending with a bow on top, and I liked that it was a little more grown up.

Getting even more interesting.

This series is becoming a serious addiction. I keep turning pages and spending to buy the next book. It is YA and so G rated and not too dark but the twists and turns keep it interesting.

While the family still faces annihilation it doesn't seem to be the main focus of this installment. Got a lot of back story. My favorite Quaid was back but not exactly where I wanted him.

Well. Shit went down. Quaid. I don't like you right now. Reasons or no. I'm kinda leaning towards this Liam guy that's supposed to pop up in the next book. Speaking of the next book, I have a problem. I have about 10 bucks and 15 books to get through. Thank God I get my allowance soon.
