I was looking for a job, not a Romeo… because everyone knows how that story ends.
I’ve got three hundred bucks left in my bank account, two jobs, and one final chance to make it as an actress in New York City.
After years of being a chorus girl, I arrive at my first Broadway audition for a leading role thinking I finally have a shot at making it...until I come face to face with the director, Holden James—the rich quarterback from college who broke my heart and stabbed me in the back three years ago.
But I’m not the same girl I was in college. And unlike three years ago, I now know just what—and who—I’m dealing with. This time, I know how to play the game. In this cutthroat business, I need to remember the truest theatrical lesson of

Katana Collins is a USA Today bestselling author of over twenty novels, novellas, and comic books in a variety of genres. She is most known for her sensual contemporary romances and her wildly popular comic book— Batman White Knight Presents: Harley Quinn with DC Comics.
When she was younger and stole her mother’s Harlequins to read beneath the covers with a flashlight, she wanted to read about the tough as nails heroine. The perfectly imperfect girl with quirks and attitude and sass. And the anti-heroes who were anything but “Prince Charming.” Forget the knight on a white horse … she wanted the bad boy on a motorcycle.
An avid animal lover, she lives in Portland, Maine with her kind of mean cat, derpy lab-pitt mix, mellow chihuahua, and very not mellow cairn terrier puppy. Oh, yeah… there’s a husband somewhere in that mix, too.
She can usually be found in a coffee shop with her nose buried in a laptop wearing fabulous (albeit sometimes impractical) shoes.
She loves connecting with book lovers like herself, and fellow sassy storytellers, so feel free to drop her an email, visit her on her website. She also loves connecting on Instagram, Facebook or in her reader group, Kat’s Kittens!
I found this read incredibly frustrating. While I understand this is meant to be to angsty it goes beyond that.
Holden has the potential to be an incredible guy, very devoted and passionate with a heart of gold behind his tough guy exterior. But instead he chooses to take out his anger towards his father on others around him. (Apparently that therapy in his flashbacks didn’t work out well for him). He is manipulative and secretive and just plain hurtful.
Kate goes between being unapologetically her unique self to an absolute door mat.
Neither Holden nor Katey are doing what they want for the right reasons and it really made me so angry.
I know this ended in a cliff hanger and there is more of the story to come so I may come back and feel differently about this when I get the rest of the story but right now I don’t know why either of them continue to be drawn to each other. Right now, if I was Kate I would hate Holden and I would smack Missy right across the face.
I didn’t really connect with most of the characters as I don’t have an interest in being an actor/actress and don’t know much about production but Duncan was hilarious.
I was fortunate to have been selected for a free ARC of this book, and voluntarily leave my review.

I didn't like its only in the heroines pov except the flashbacks but this started off great and I can't wait for the next. The chemistry was great and it was well written
I received an Arc of Broken Romeo in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Literally Yours PR.
Kate has already had her one chance to make it into acting brutal taken away from her and it's now her last chance fate seems to be working against her as her past has come back to haunt her in the way of Holden. Will she finally get the chance to preform or will things come crashing down again?
I loved Kate she's just a sweetheart and she's had a rough go at making it as an actress but it's not for lack of trying. She determined and not willing to give up no matter who is in the way. I wasn't sure about Holden as we see little blips of their past and I really like him. He's grown on me as the story progresses but Kate is my favorite of the duo. She's just everything I needed from a leading lady and such a sweetie even if Holden is swoon worthy.
I ended up devouring Broken Romeo in one session it was hard to put down I just had to know how Kate and Holden's story was going to play out. I found the concept interesting it's a unique idea because I've not read many stories set around broadway plays and really enjoyed it. The characters are easy to connect with and the story is a perfect enemies to lovers romance.
I found Broken Romeo to be a captivating story that captured my heart as well as my imagination. The author has done a beautiful job creating an enchanting story that left me wanting more. I'm a touch obsessed with Romeo and Juliet and the author nailed it. My only complaint is I have to wait for the next one and I can't wait to continue Kate and Holden's story.
Broken Romeo by Katana Collins is the First book in the Shattered Hearts Series. This starts the story of Kate and Holden but there is a previous book called 'Shattered Juliet' that is a Prequel of sorts to their story. So I personally do think that should be read first to full enjoy their story. Kate has several jobs but one dream to be an actress. Holden is a well off boy who is Broadway director on a dream play that Kate wants to be in. This book does lead us to a cliffhanger setting us up for more in their story.
Broken Romeo by Katana Collins, is the first book in the Shattered Hearts Series, in this story we meet Katherine “Kate” Harris, this girl lives in New York, she is a theater actress and she is struggling to try to get an opportunity that launched her into stardom, but she hasn't been so lucky, although when she was at college she was one of the best, there was something in her past that destroyed what could have been her future, when they called her to an audition that seems to be that role, the one who can change her life, fate plays a trick on her by putting the man who destroyed her five years ago back in front of her. Holden James is a famous and respected theater actor who is about to direct his first play, when it's there that his path crosses again with Katherine, he hurt her and he tries to apologize, but she simply does not accept it, he try to assure her that he has reasons for doing what he did but for her it's too late for explanations and the damage has been done, when it turns out that he is the one who is going to direct the play for which she is auditioning everything gets a little tough for her, but she will finish winning the part but when Holden sets conditions for this she will find herself again in the vicinity of the man she swore to stay away from. But his power over her is still there and she can no prevent longer fall prey to the feelings he has always awakened in her, only to end up hurt again. Only this time Kate is not the innocent girl from five years ago and she is determined to show those who want to ruin her that it will not be so easy anymore. This is a heartbreaking story, I ended up with my heart broken for Kate, although I admire her strength I can't help but feel anger at what Holden does, for me cheating is a strong no no and experiencing it through this character was very hard. I finish this book with the hope that the next one will arrive soon and I must say that for me Holden must do something too big if he is going to be the character that Kate ends up with, for me at this moment she deserves someone better, Even if he is doing it for her, he is not in my good book. But I will wait patiently for what is to come in this series, this story is full of angst and deception, I hope redemption will soon come for a character as beautiful as Kate. Highly recommended! *Thanks to Katana Collins and Literally Yours PR for my ARC. I voluntarily leave my honest review*
Altamente Recomendada! *Gracias a Katana Collins y a Literally Yours PR por mi ARC. Dejo voluntariamente mi reseña honesta*
I was provided an ARC of this book via the Author and LiterallyYours PR, all opinions are my own.
This is the first book in the Shattered Hearts series and follows Kate and Holden as they navigate Broadway as well as deal with the fallout from their days acting in college where they met. I didn't realize there is also a prequel Shattered Juliet, which I have not read yet. I do plan on reading that soon to gain additional perspective. Broken Romeo is told from Kate's perspective in the present and 5 years ago from Holden's perspective via his journal.
Kate is a down on her luck actress. She's never really broken onto the scene despite being extremely talented. She's gotten some small parts, but she is at her breaking point. She is broke and about to get evicted when her agent calls about one last audition that might just be "the one". When she finds out her ex who singlehandedly broke her heart and ruined her career is directing the show she isn't so sure about the role. Holden has had a ton of success on the stage despite the fact that he was never destined to act. As a senior and a football player, he was short on credits and took a theater class to get an easy A and the credits he needed to graduate. There he meets innocent freshman Kate and gets the lead in the production of a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Kate and Holden have chemistry both on and off the stage, and we learn through his journal entries about his developing feelings for her and the expectations put on him from his parents. Present day we are told upfront that Holden betrayed Kate at some point during their time in college but we never find out what exactly he did. When they reunite 5 years later during his directorial debut, Kate and Holden still have that same chemistry but it is fueled by her rage at what he did. We slowly get bits and pieces of the backstory with more to come in the next book.
This first book gives us insight into both characters in the past and where they are at today. Kate's character only just begins to show backbone I wanted to see from her when book 1 ends. I hoping we see more of that from her in book 2 as things are sure to heat up as the show progresses and more personality conflicts arise. The same goes for Holden. We've got alot of conflict brewing and he is in the middle of all of it. I'm looking forward to seeing how their characters develop in the next installment.
This does end on a cliffhanger, and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on Rebel Romeo, which comes out in February 2024. Fortunately we don't have to wait very long to find out what happens to our star-crossed lovers.
Kate's got one last shot to make it as an actress, just her luck the director is the ex who shattered her heart into an infinite amount of pieces. But she can do this, be directed in the only chance she's got, and keep her heart encapsulated in rage and ice so that Holden can't break it again. Too bad her body's not on the same page as her mind...
I was pretty invested in this story, so getting to the end and finding the cliffhanger was less than satisfying, but not unexpected, as at least there's a warning in the blurb. I like the basic premise - second chance, angry heroine, jerk ex, but for some reason I didn't really connect with either character, and I downright despised Holden. I honestly don't think he deserves Kate's forgiveness because he's weak af, STILL even after all these years. Sigh...but I do want a satisfactory conclusion, perhaps Holden will grown a backbone and not let his family manipulate him, and perhaps Kate will kick Holden to the curb in all ways but professionally, until he can prove he's redeemed himself. Here's hoping the next part I get both these things, and more.
ARC provided by Literally Yours PR for an honest review.
I'm going to preface my review by saying that there is a prequel called Shattered Juliet that, while you don't really need to read it, you should. It just gives that little bit extra and takes us back really to where it all began. So this book essentially starts where the prequel ends, only this comes from Kate's perspective. This book is told from two different timelines; The present is Kate's POV and the past is Holden's POV. While I don’t mind it done this way, because at least we get some of each of their POVs, I do prefer the books I read to be Dual POV. Kate is not the same girl she was 5 years ago. She is a lot stronger, she takes now rubbish and she stands up for herself. One thing that didn’t change, was her love of acting. She was dedicated to becoming a Broadway star back in college and she still is. Though she is struggling to make ends meet and still trying to make it as an actress. She auditions for a part, only to find herself back in front of the boy who destroyed her back in College. I enjoyed how this was told and you could really feel the angst and heartbreak. These two had amazing chemistry right from the start and what happened was awful for Kate. While I feel a little sorry for Holden, him being a pawn back in college, I don’t understand why he still allows people to have such power of him. While I feel like these two could be good, Holden really needs to grow a pair. He is the character that has more potential for growth and I am looking forward to seeing what happens next! This one does end on a cliff-hanger so be warned! For lovers of enemies-to-lovers, add this to your TBR list.

Wannabe actress Kate and Holden met at college where he was the football star destined for greatness but who was short of the credits he needed to graduate so he took an acting class to fill the gap. To begin with he surreptitiously helped Kate out realising she was short of money, but before he realised what was happening, he had begun to fall for her when they were cast opposite each other in Romeo and Juliet but then something happened, what exactly isn’t yet clear and will probably be explained in the next book but ultimately it’s clear he betrayed her and it broke her confidence. Years later they meet again where he’s the big Broadway star and Kate is a professional audition goer, down to her last $300 ready to throw in the towel and return home to her judgemental family but to her astonishment she wins the role in the show he’s making his directorial debut in.
Broken Romeo is a very angsty and emotional slowburn story and told in an unusual manner with the present aspect being told from Kate’s point of view while the past is told through Holden’s journal which he gave to Kate to read. It’s obvious Holden feels guilty over whatever had happened especially he saw the impact it had had on Kate but there is something a bit condescending about his behaviour like he’s doing her a favour and he comes across as being weak and spiteful. Because of this I never really felt like there was any kind of chemistry between him and Kate. This book does end on a cliff hanger but not one that’s an OMG! moment and if I’m being honest, if I was Kate I’d be saying adios Holden and grabbing the new opportunity that presented itself with both hands.
Broken Romeo is an emotional whirlwind of a story about heartbreak, regret , growth and rebuilding yourself after major crashing past experiences and second chance . I loved it. And I eat it up . Every bitter sweet part of it . And the college girl in me relived every piece of this story. Because it hits too close to heart . For me reading Broken Romeo was emotional and heartbreaking and in the same time healing and because of that it wasn't an easy one. And that's what makes it such a great story. Broken Romeo is the story of Holden and Katherine. Holden is a college football player that ended up in acting class by chance where he meets Katherine. Kate is there because that's her dream and wants to be an actress. From the start they have a strong connection and great chemistry between them. Even acting with her comes easily for Holden. But he's not there to become an actor. How come then he ends up one of leading Broadway actors and Kate being a great actress in college is struggling with her career .The story has two timelines. The present is from Kate's POV and the past is told in Holden's POV and that's a great way to get a hold of all that went down in the past . Because history is repeating itself and the only difference is that Kate's not that girl from the past and this time she's decided to make it and come whole on the other side. She's smart and talented, and sassy and stronger than before. I loved it how she stands up for herself and isn't accepting the same nonsense as before. Was disappointed in Holden for how easily he fell in line with what was ordered and wanted from him. And much more how he never stand up for himself and choose the easy way out. And now that Kate is aware of a lot more that went down in the past she's more prepared to fight for herself and her future. For me Holden has more growth potential to achieve, to redeem himself and I'm not sure what he has to do to make up for all his past choices and mistakes. So I can't wait for Rebel Romeo and to see how all this will unfold in the end.
I received an ARC copy of this book by Literally Yours PR and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Katana Collins is a new to me author, and I have to admit, I’ll be going back to see what else she has.
Kate is a girl down on her luck, even with the two jobs she works, she’s down to her last three hundred dollars! But that doesn’t stop her wanting her dream of becoming an actress…. And when she gets a chance to attend an audition to be a leading lady, Kate jumps at the chance…. But it’s not going to be easy, the director of the show is non other than Holden James!
These two have a past together. (And apparently there is a prequel to this duet, I’ve not read it, but I think I’m going to go back and read it) and there is a messy breakup that broke Kate’s heart!
Kate is a great character, she’s strong and independent, and won’t let Holden destroy her like he did last time. And I have to admit I wanted her to make him grovel (a lot 😝)
Holden will frustrate you, have you rolling your eyes and then want him winning back Kate, (there are things from their past that will surprise you, and have you backing Holden to win back Kate.)
It has all the emotions in this book, it has heartbreak, angst, banter and a bucket load of chemistry. Their past is a complicated one, and you do have to wonder if Holden will actually win Kate back!
Cliffhanger ending, so be warned! But I want to know what happens, so I’ve made a note of when the next book is due out!
I’ve got three hundred bucks left in my bank account, two jobs, and one final chance to make it as an actress in New York City. Thank you, Katana Collins and Literally Yours PR, for a copy.
As a fan of this author's creativity, I happily dug into this one. This follows Kate, an aspiring actress, doing the best she can finding her way after a messy breakup with Holden. I am not a huge fan of Broadway, so initially this wasn't a super fit for me as a reader. I think if I was a Broadway fan, I would have enjoyed her process and the story more. This hit me around a 3.5 star read.
In an ugly twist, the director of the play she is auditioning far is replaced with, you guessed it, her least favorite person. There's a lot of manipulation, mind games, and I wondered several times, why she was such a doormat!
I didn't really connect with the characters - but that's entirely on me. This is easy to read, and flows well. This is part one of this duet, and there isn't much closure at the end of the read, so as much as I say I'm not thrilled with the characters, I do want to know if certain things are resolved.
I continue to be a fan of this author, and look forward to her next release. I was fortunate to have been selected for a free ARC of this book, and voluntarily leave my review.
This is the first of the Shattered Hearts Duet featuring Kate and Holden. In order to get the background, you should read the prequel first, but it is not essential. Kate is now a struggling actress in New York and is down to her last $300, and is threatened with eviction, when she gets called for an audition to star on a Broadway show. She is incredibly excited that her fortunes are going to change, when she discovers that the director is Holden James, her first love, the man who broke her heart, betrayed her and ruined her! This book is told from Kate's point of view with flashbacks from five years ago through Holden's journal from that time. The writing is excellent, you can feel the hurt, the chemistry and desire to love and be loved come through but most importantly, you can see that Kate is no longer the 18 year old innocent she once was. This does end on a cliff hanger and and I cannot wait for February for the release of the conclusion, Rebel Romeo. Love this book!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
Kate is a girl living in New York with three hundred dollars to her name, two jobs, and one final opportunity to make her dream of being an actress in New York City. However she is going though a breakup with Holden and it has been messy. He is a Broadway director that she met when she auditioned to be in a show. The poor girl has been going to audition after audition and having no luck at all. But her luck is finally turning when she get the offer for a Broadway show. The big drawback is that her ex is in the show too. He destroyed her life one time before and she is not about to let that happen again. I do have to say that it took me a while with Holden. He will frustrate you in so many ways. This book does end in a cliffhanger and I will be around to read the second one. I have to know what happened.
Kate has always wanted to be an actress, but it is proving much more difficult to follow her dreams than she expected. She has reached a crossroads where despite working multiple jobs, she may have to follow another path if she isn’t chosen for the next role she is auditioning for. That task is about to become much more difficult when the director happens to be someone she knew in the past that didn’t end well.
Holden is an accomplished actor who is now transitioning into directing. He regrets the events of the past and even though he wants things to be different both in the past and in the present that means he has some choices to make.
The chemistry and connection between Kate and Holden is as strong as ever but there is so much unresolved between them that must be dealt with first and I am looking forward to seeing what happens to this couple in the next book of this series.
I'm hooked, but now I have to wait for book 2. This was my first Katana Collins book. She writes with an immediacy of conversation and interaction I find addictive; so I find it particular that I haven't discovered her before now. Somewhat reminiscent of Leisa Rayven's "Bad Romeo," which I read many years back. Both books have a couple of students who become involved while acting in a Romeo and Juliet type student play. They fall for each other, and break apart only to be reunited years later. In both, our heroine has more emotional scars to overcome, which is a particular story plot I enjoy in second chance romance. So many similarities in two stories that are so different that I'm now inspired to go back and reread Ms Rayven's book to see if the angst was as poignant as Ms Collin's newer work. As well this book will inspire me to search out Ms Collins' back catalog; which is always a high compliment to pay a book!
4.5 ⭐️ Katana Collins is a new to me author, and I went into this book completely blind. A truly emotional and heartbreaking story and that ending …. I was not prepared for a cliffhanger and I’m still aching from it. Brilliantly written Holden gives us the past, and the present told through Kate, it weaves and binds and totally drags you in. Their chemistry and easy connection from the start is beautiful, but things happened, college ended, their lives diverged. Kate’s grown, she’s stronger and she knows exactly what she wants and how to get it, she won’t let anything get in her way. Holden for his part wants a second chance and you find that not everything was as it seemed back in college. I cannot wait for book two. (I recommend the prequel which I went back and read to fill in some point but it’s not totally necessary).
I really enjoy Katana’s writing, this story is fantastic and ends with an epic cliffy. Counting the days until Rebel Romeo releases.
Kate needs a miracle or at least something positive to go her way. She’s a hard worker, determined but feeling frustrated. She gets a huge break and a dream of an opportunity but it may come at a costs.
Holden is a show director on Broadway. He’s looking for a female lead and he knows who he wants but it could come with some drama.
Holden comes across as a bit of a manipulative jerk and intimidating but he does redeem himself. I loved how strong Kate is and how she fought for herself.
Katana writes enemies to lovers, second chance romance so well! The push and pull, banter, sass and amazing dialogue keeps you engrossed in the story.
I adore this author. This book is filled with angst, steam filled scenes, and a seemingly second chance between two ex college "lovers/students/actors" that leaves you shaking your head because of the situations that come up in the present day. Lots of flashbacks that gives the reader content of the history between the two main characters. This author writes effortlessly and draws her readers in before they even know what's hit them. What I find fascinating is this author is also an incredible actress, so you know what she writes is very familiar to her. Although the "panty" scenes are just plain creepy, it definitely gives this story some depth. Loved every bit of it and can't wait for book two to be released.
Obsessed with this series, the prologue being woven into this story using Holden's journal entries is amazing and I loved how that helped refresh my memory but also see his POV. Kate and her career is a great storyline, you can see why she does what she does and the reasons why so well, even when they are a mistake or a undesirable choice.
Holden's redemption story will be so fun to eventually see, I hope him and Kate work it all out, but they have a long way to go before then. Holden and Kate's chemistry is amazing and keeps you wanting more as you read each of their scenes.
This book is an emotional rollercoaster ride. This slow-burn romance has everything from banter to heartbreak and angst. The book has dual timelines, the present, from Kate's point of view, and the past which is told through Holden's Journal. Kate and Holden have a complicated history, and their breakup left Kate shattered. However, Kate is determined not to let Holden hurt her again. As I read the book, I found myself constantly swinging back and forth between loving and hating Holden.
Heads up! This book does end on a cliffhanger.
Thanks to Katana Collins and Literally Yours PR for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
Our FMC, Kate, personifies the struggling actress in New York, fighting for her first big break before she runs out of money. At the biggest audition of her fledgling career, she runs into the ex that broke her heart and now holds all the cards for her potential future on Broadway. In his directorial debut, he wants Kate, but the role will come with consequences. Will Kate be able to channel the pain of their breakup into the emotions needed for the role? Does she possess the fortitude to fight against the jealous drama behind the scenes? Unfortunately we'll have wait for the second book to see how their story ends!
Broken Romeo is the story of regrets and second chances. Kate and Holden have a storied past including breaking both of their hearts. Now Holden wants to apologize and showcase Kate's talent on Broadway.
This story is built in a foundation of cards that are ready to crumble with the stiffest of winds. There is a lot underlying their relationship.
I am enjoying Holden's flashbacks via his journal. I enjoy that Kate is strong and venerable. Be warned there is a cliffie at the end that I never saw coming. I am too invested in this story to stop now.
Oh my heart!! And the cliffhanger…gah! Broken Romeo was the first part of Katana’s Shattered Hearts duet. If you haven’t read the prequel, you won’t be lost but I would recommend reading Shattered Juliet first. It was full of heartbreak, willpower, and emotions!
Kate was down to her last few hundred bucks and she wasn’t sure she was going to be able to keep going. With her dream on the line, she had one last chance to make it. Except, the director was a blast from her past. Would she be able to forgive Holden or would he ruin her dreams again?
I love how committed Kate was to her dreams, she knows what she wants and she was trying everything in her power! I hope everything goes her way. I seriously need the next one. So many things going through my brain. Can’t wait to find out what happens!!
✨Review✨ *** Broken Romeo was so good!!! I loved Kate. She was so unique and amazing. Her personality and quirkiness made her so easy to love. I love and hates Holden. He was a major jerk half the time but I also feel like he is going to redeem himself big time. I loved the storyline and seeing Holden's pov. I loved the writing and all the characters. The ending was so good and I cannot wait to see what happens next! *** Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Romance: 🩷🩷 Spice: 🔥 *** Thank you to Katana Collins and Literally Yours Promotions for the ARC to review. ***
Oh my, this read took me on a roller coaster ride from start to finish. It did take me just a bit to warm up to the characters, but once I did, I could not stop! I enjoyed how we get to see the past through Holden's eyes via his journal so it gives you a look at his "then" with Kate. The two of them are very intense, both then and now, you can feel the fire that's just under the surface. I'll be anxiously waiting on the next step in their story!
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I read Shattered Juliet so I was ready to dive into this book! Holden and Kate have a past. It wasn’t pretty and neither one of them have forgotten. This book is very angsty and filled with chemistry! I enjoyed how this book weaved the current timeframe with the past. And I liked how the flashbacks were from Holden’s perspective. I was sucked into this story and didn’t want to put it down! I want more Holden and Kate! There’s definitely more than meets the eye happening! I can’t wait to read Rebel Romeo!! Grab your copy now!
