I found this book to be very helpful in teaching me how to understand exploring the writing process with young kids. The book is definitely geared more towards teachers in the traditional classroom, but I found lots of great information to bring to homeschooling.
Some of the book went over my head, but it was easy to research those parts a little more. This is definitely worth a read if you have young kids that love to tell stories or enjoy drawing pictures. It will help you to learn how to ask the right questions to keep them thinking and developing those ideas into something more.
This book is a learning tool for teachers about the teaching of writing. It is both based in theory and full of practical, inspirational ideas for ways to help children as writers. It is easy to follow, set out in chapters about the writing traits. Each trait has two chapters devoted to it, one for teaching ourselves as teachers and one for classroom practice. It has examples for how to see the traits in children's writing and how to develop them. It has annotated lists of mentor texts to use for each trait. Each chapter concludes with a something to think about and some study questions so a school teaching staff could work through the book as self-guided professional learning.
The book gave a lot of helpful information about the 6 Traits and how to integrate them into any current writing program. The chapters where student writing was analyzed became very redundant and could have been much shorter. The chapters where it mentioned different writing ideas were extremely helpful and creative.
I love this book. I always looked at 6 traits as an interesting way to teach writing but this book totally put it in perspective. I love that it gives different books to teach each different trait of writing. This is a must have for any elementary teacher.
I thought this book was spectacular!! There are so many beautiful children's art and writing examples that really bring clarity to some of the complexities of teaching writing. I believe this is a must have for every teacher!!
