One of the very best books about the complexities of combat for soldiers, even those fighting in what they consider a just cause. Stands alongside J. Glenn Gray's The Warriors: Reflections on Men in Battle. The format is conversations between Israeli soldiers (and a few elders and wives) who fought in the 1967 Six-Day War. The perspectives cover a very broad range, but what comes through is the real and continuing cost for those who fought and those caught up in the fighting. Many places where I found myself thinking about the deep history of what's happening now in Gaza and beyond. No simple answers but many reminders that neither "side" has anything resembling a monopoly on righteousness.
