The Essence of Julian: A Paraphrase of Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love

Rate this book
Many people, including trained church professionals, find Julian of Norwich very difficult to read. Translations in modern English don't even seem to help. It's hard to get past her medieval Catholicims to her radically inclusive ideas - to the insights that made Julian a spiritual giant. The Essence of Julian is the most accessible and lively translation of this difficult medieval masterpiece yet available. It is simply much easier to read and understand than any previous treatment of Julian's writings enthusiast will be satisfied for many years to come.

What a wonderful condensation of Julian's Showings! I love this book, for it has short excerpts from throughout Julian's revelations, with certain parts written more as poetry, like this:

I love you
and you love me
and our love will never be separated.

The whole book is beautiful and much easier to understand than some of the versions of Revelations of Divine Love that try to stick to the text very closely. This book gives us the main ideas and thoughts in the Showings, but in modern and understandable words. I love that, because I was able to stop having to try to figure out what a passage meant and just relax and let God speak to me in the words. It's so comforting to hear the words of peace, comfort, love and grace for all people that are written here. It's so comforting to know that deep down somehow all is well, because God has His hand in things, and that all will be well, because He won't stop working till all is made well for all people, till all wrongs are righted, till all wounds are healed!
