Milton Love is a research biologist at the Marine Science Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara. He has conducted research on the marine fishes of California for over 40 years and is the author of over 90 publications on the fishes of the Pacific Coast. For the past 18 years, and using a manned research submersible, Dr. Love has carried out surveys of the fish populations living around natural reefs and oil/gas platforms throughout the southern California Bight.
Imagine Robin Williams (the comedian) as a scientist who is passionate about fish, and you might have a good idea about the voice Milton Love employs to discuss what could be a very dry topic. This book is a non-fiction manual about fish in the Pacific that I read for research purposes, but I laughed so much that I fell in love with the book.
I contacted Milton Love with some additional fish questions and he was incredibly helpful. What a funny guy who really knows his stuff. And by the way, he has a new book out now (a revised copy of this one) that is even more comprehensive and includes color photos of the fish: "Certainly More Than You Want to Know About the Fishes of the Pacific Coast: A Postmodern Experience." Definitely worth it!
Dr. Love is amazing. Not only his name but his subject matter. Great cocktail party conversation--"Did you know...that the anglerfish male is a sexual parasite?" Fishes put Larry the Lounge Lizard to shame!
ABSOLUTELY one of the best fish books ever written! Funny and very informative! Milton Love knows his fish and knows how to write information with a sense of humor. I have well over 200 fish books and this is one of my very favorites!
