Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

my love and appreciation for this manga are increasing, I love the story and the characters. It's so atmospheric, sad, funny, and adventurous and the relationship between the characters is so amazing!! the art is so well done along with the story as well! this is so far a piece of art... what is even stress when I read one piece?! it is so cozy and heartwarming idk 🥹🫶🏻

Despite being an integral part of the overall narrative, much of this feels like filler, from the silliness that doesn't reward the readers to bland, and sometimes overly annoying, character choices. Despite the critique, it's still got entertainment value and only really suffers due to the quality of the rest of the series.

The first half with the Giants was okay. Some funny moments, and get to see Luffy fight for his crew again, but it's overall too long.

Then we get to the Vivi's main quest, nami sick, and landing on a snowy area. This is a lot of fun, some amazing funny moments "hey it's cold here" from luffy especially. Oh and we get to see Chopper!!!! Overall the second half made this far more enjoyable. I'm starting to see a trend with the big volumes that I always like one half way more than the other. A 3.5 out of 5, but I'll bump it to a 4.

This collection introduces us to an “honorary Straw Hat” who more or less drives the whole next arc: Princess Nefertari Vivi. She’s been deep undercover trying to figure out who’s been engineering a coup in her home country of Alabasta. She’s finally figured it out, but now her cover is blown and she needs help getting back safely. The reaction of the various Straw Hat pirates can be summed up thusly:

Nami: We get paid, right? There’s gotta be a big reward for this^.
Zoro: I think Nami’s gonna smack me or bring up the money I owe her if I say no, so…sure, whatever.
Sanji: I wake up and there’s an actual beautiful princess on our ship who needs help? I don’t care if I’m still dreaming - count me in!
Usopp: Wait, wait, we’re getting involved in a CIVIL WAR? When did this happen? Why did no one consult me?
Luffy: The bad guy’s a Warlord of the Sea*? Awesome! When do I get to punch him in the face? And we get snacks after, right?

^Hello there, Han Solita!
*One of 7 major pirates the World Government allows to operate, ostensibly to keep the small fry in check.
Vivi
(Of course the princess has an animal companion! This is Karoo)

There is understandably a bit of an adjustment period as Vivi gets used to how these loveable lunatics operate. But she’s seen that they can handle the formidable pairs of agents sent by the criminal organization, Baroque Works, that is behind the coup. So she goes with it. By the time they’ve passed through Little Garden – surviving dinosaurs and saber tooth tigers, encountering giants engaged in a 100 year fighting competition, and fighting off Mr. 3 and Miss Golden Week (Baroque Works agents who almost manage to turn 3 members of the crew into wax sculptures and to hypnotize Luffy into NOT rescuing his friends, respectively) Vivi is pretty sold on their abilities.

This proves quite important when Nami falls dangerously ill. Vivi declares that the fastest way to go save her people is to get their skilled navigator well again first! This takes them to Drum Island, a snowy “winter island” where – somewhat ironically - the inhabitants’ biggest fear is the return of their monarch. Thanks to that king, the only remaining doctor on the island is an eccentric old “witch” who is quite hard to pin down. Sanji and Luffy take on the task of getting Nami to her, which involves climbing a mountain inhabited by man-eating rabbits.

The paired male-female Baroque Works agents gives this part of the story a real 1970s spy movie feel, especially with the character designs of the first pair of serious antagonists:
Mr5MissValentine
This also means that Sanji gets his first shot at more or less playing James Bond, which is a role he will be absolutely LIVING for as this goes forward! He does pretty well, too. Despite missing everything else going on in Little Garden, he manages to do two very crucial things…which is surprising, given that this starts with him wandering into a wax house, drinking some tea he finds there, and answering the snail-phone with: “Hello, this is restaurant Le Crap. Would you like to make a reservation?”

Speaking of the male-female teams, we get our first glimpse of the exception to this: Bon Clay, AKA Mr. 3. I am so excited to see more of our gender-fluid monarch and their (surprisingly wholesome, given the Baroque Works thing) interactions with the Straw Hats. We also get our first look at a mysterious baddie* in a cowboy hat who’s going to be an even bigger part of the story going forward.

Robin
*Both senses of the word, currently.

There’s also a slightly trippy moment where one of Usopp’s most ridiculous lies comes true. Will this be a recurring pattern? We shall see! Usopp is also extremely impressed by the “manly honor” of the giants’ battle. Considering that they’ve forgotten how it started, Nami understandably thinks this is VERY dumb. But Usopp is always looking for inspiration to build up his courage, and vows to visit their home island of Elbath one day to learn from this warrior culture.

And speaking of Elbath…we also get here the first instance of Luffy or one of his crew basically going “fuck the will of the gods, people should make their own fate!” It looks right now like just the kind of thing rebellious pirates do…but I have it on good authority that this gains a LOT more significance later!

Two main story lines. The giants arc was a little too long, especially some of the fight scenes with Mr 3. However the next arc which will be continued was awesome. Dalton seem and village/island seemed like a cool town. The evil king/pirate seemed like something different as well.

Being a life-long manga/anime fan, I'm still puzzled how this one slipped under my radar for so long!

And I'm not afraid to say it.. I liked the Giants arc! There's something Shakespearean about it! And the fact that it wasn't completely extraneous and tied in to the larger Baroque Works story? Nice touch from Oda.

Interested to see how this arc ultimately plays out, and that's all I can ask for from ANY book.

My Review of One Piece 7-9 Where I talk about the series as a whole.

Review of One Piece 10-12

*WARNING: Two things. One, I have not read the first 6 volumes of the manga though I have seen the anime through the corresponding stories. As I get the first two volumes, I will add them. Two, I know these are three separate volumes and I would usually break them up into their corresponding separate books. However, as this is the only way I've read them; I will treat them as the ones I'm used to.

*The Gush*

Another great 3-in-1 volume heading into the Alabasta Arc (and it is an arc-sooo long), with lots of fighting, many new Devil Fruit powers, and their new crewmember really comes into her own.

My favorite part of this volume is 14, where the team goes to Little Garden. The baddies they fight and particularly the Devil Fruit powers they have, was one of my favorite parts of the anime and the manga was just as great.

Volume 15 leaves you once again at a cliffhanger as the crew make their way through Drum Island as the former King Wapol returns ready to attack them and his subjects!

The characters continue to grow, with Vivi teaching several of them things about themselves. My favorite scene is on the ship where Vivi stops Luffy from attacking the villagers of Drum Island when they refuse to help Nami. She calls him out on being a terrible Captain and that he can’t always solve his problems with his fist. A wonderful moment where you see Luffy realize for a moment what he should be and what he is not. This is also a time to remember why you love Nami. Often times I get fed up with her as she is very mercenary and doesn’t seem to care about others. And yet there are times she does and those are some of her best characters moments.

The new characters introduced in this Omnibus version are some of my favorite in the series so far. The two fighters on Little Garden, the main people on Drum Island, and even the new members of Baroque Works are interesting and fun to watch as they are pitted against the Straw Hat Pirates.

*The Rant*

Nothing really here except I don’t have the next volume and can’t wait until early June to get it!

*Conclusion*

Another great addition to the series, the Straw Hat Pirates are finally starting to get into some fun stuff as they make their way through the Grand Line!

Loved it! One Piece is one of my favorite manga series. I can't get enough of it. I first started off watching the anime but have now gotten into the manga and found that I love it more than the anime. Can't wait to get the next volume from the bookstore.

I read most of this in 2021 but having this be the first thing I finish in 2022, is perfect. I'm about to encounter one of my favorite characters and the tension in vol 14 and 15 is especially high. I'll probably never finish this entire series but I'm having fun trying.

I think I was in the middle of the Little Garden arc where I stopped in the anime, so now I’ve finally read past and I’m getting new story and characters. This is actually one of the better ones I’ve read and I think I’m finally getting into this series for real now.

One Piece demonstra um desenho incrível e mantém um traço invejável desde o primeiro volume. A nível de argumento não é nenhuma obra de arte, mas é entretenimento puro. Espero que continue ao mesmo nível.

DNF somewhere in volume 14. I'm sorry but this is all just kinda of boring right now. I might pick up more later but I think I'm gonna take a break for right now.

Sinto que depois que eles entraram na Grand Line a história deu uma esfriada. Por mais que goste de Whisky Peak e Little Garden, acho que são arcos bem mornos se comparados com East Blue.

I know everyone says wait until you get to Arlong Park then if you still aren't into it it might be a good time to put the series down. While I agree that Arlong Park is where we really start to get more attachment to the characters and I REALLY enjoyed that sequence, I think it took me a little longer to fall fully in love with the series but I finally am now. I felt so much anticipation and joy any time I could pick up this omnibus. One Piece just makes me so happy man.

The plotline surrounding the giants was just fine; I mainly enjoyed it for the chance to see the main characters interact with a prehistoric island, and to learn more about the Baroque Works members.

Favorite moment: VILLAIN ARC NAME AND TITLE REVEAL

We're here. The Grand Line is here with all it's dangers and new pirate crews to challenge our strawhats (and upcoming crew members!)
What I love about this part of the story is that it gets intense and develops so much more. While we have our first long arc. I remember loving Alabasta and cannot wait to read it again.

(Honestly, I am enjoying myself so much that i want to make my reread a priority but I just can't right now. Seriously thinking about restructuring my plans for 2026 to make it happen)

2024 -----------------------------

★★★★☆

This volume was just a giant tease for a big villain but the fight against Mr. 3 felt more epic because of the stakes. I didn't spect Vivi to tag along for so long but okay.
Being super behing (I mean, almost 22 years) I recognized the name of a future straw hat, excited to see how that will play out.

5/5 stars.

Whisky Peak happened. It honestly made me giggle. Not a favorite, but not bad by any means. A short little island stay.

Then the Straw Hats went to Little Garden, which is one of my favorite arcs, just because Dorry and Brogy are impossible to beat. It’s also pretty cool that the current arc, over 1100 chapters in, is on Elbaph Island, the home of Dorry and Brogy. (Usopp is probably having the best time on Elbaph.)

THEN, the Straw Hats headed to Drum Island, where they meet Chopper, perhaps my FAVORITE character in One Piece. Honestly, the Baroque Works/Alabasta Saga is just chef’s kiss for me.

Omni volume 6 will be some more bangers, since it’ll complete Drum Island and kickstart Alabasta, the first MAJOR EPIC arc (and by this, I mean 50+ chapters on one island; if I counted right, 62 chapters in total).

The arc with the giants was kind of boring TBH: I didn't really care about why Dorry and Broggy were fighting. I did enjoy the gang taking on Baroque Works, although that Mr. 3 kinda creeps me out ;p

Am excited for the Drum Island arc. Dalton seems like an upstanding dude, and I can't wait to see more of Tony Tony Chopper!!
