I guess it shows how popular Kauffmann is, compared to Kael or Ebert, that I'm the first one to comment on this book of film reviews. I'm not shocked. I've read 4 books of Kauffmann film crticism covering 1955-1979, and this is the weakest. Possibly because he was reviewing films for the NYT's during this time period, and for whatever reason they aren't in this book.
And so, we get no reviews of Oliver, Heat of the Night, or A Man for all Seasons, to name three AA winners. Other important films from 1966-1970 are also missing such as: Help, Planet of the Apes. Butch Cassidy, Good bad and Ugly, the wild bunch, The Dirty Dozen, Lion in Winter, In Cold Blood, Army of Shadows, Point blank, Alfie, Seconds, Bedazzled and My Night at Maude's . However, we do get film reviews of such forgotten films as: Putney Swope, Faces, Duet for Cannibals, The Loves of Isadore, Tell them willie boy was here, and The red and white.
This is one volume of SK criticism not worth buying.
