I wanted more about how to make shampoo & soap, not how to start with shampoo and soap bases and add scent.

This book was not my favorite of my options in this category from the local library. It relied too much on purchased bases rather than all natural, homemade products.

While this book does show you how to customize existing plain soaps, shampoos, etc for gifts, that's about all it shows you. This does not tell you how to actually make soap, every recipe starts out with a purchased plain unscented soap that you add very simple ingredients to, to create a luxury soap item. I think some of the items might be very nice to try, however my review lost stars due to the description being a little misleading as I was looking for how to make my own soaps. I will say that each recipe is very simple, easy to follow, and straightforward. I like that. Some of them even share a tidbit of history behind the recipes which I found interesting. If you're in a pinch and looking for a no nonsense way to quickly make nice, but also inexpensive, customizable gifts this might be the way to go.
