After recently visiting a Ladybird Books exhibition I had to track this down again. I read lots of them during my early school days and owned a few, this being one of them. The writing is a little dated and clunky, but the illustrations are brilliant. Reading now, it managed to transport me back to some time in the mid-70’s when I pored over every page thinking how exciting and scary pirates were!

Although the cover picture is a bit 'Hollywood' and doesn't feature inside, the short life stories and escapades of the 22 real-life pirates featured herein are interesting and often quite amazing. Certainly, none of them led dull lives. The author's writing style is perfect and there is quite an amount of text to read, albeit in a book of only 50 pages, half of which are occupied by the usual 1960s Ladybird style of quality illustrations. Very much recommended for any fan of Ladybird books or those with an interest in 17thC history. 5/5

A classic children’s book by the redoubtable L Du Garde Peach for Ladybird. Some dated and questionable language and assumptions, and some of the stories have been edited to keep them child friendly. Some great piratical illustrations.

Whilst my nephew was in hospital I read this to him every day and he loved it. The illustrations were great and it covered a wide variety of pirates and gave a great snippet of each of their lives. It made him want to find out more about them.
