Why do horses spook at things? Why do horses kick if approached from the rear? These and 36 other curious equine behaviors are informatively and lightheartedly answered in this handsomely illustrated volume. An original pencil drawing illustrates each insightful explanation.
Although a lot of the information is common knowledge for horse people, there were a few little tidbits here and there that added to my vat of information (like the word "vomeronasal" and the causes behind glaucoma in horses).
It's an easy, quick read and incredibly well-illustrated. Even if you're not a horse person, it's well worth the flip through!
My daughter got this book through a horse camp she attended and since I am a horse ignoramus I read it from cover to cover in about 20 minutes and learned quite a bit. Very accessible intro to horse behaviors. The sketches are sweet and appropriate to each topic. I can't say how accurate the book is since I am not experienced with horses but I like the way it makes humans responsible for gently guiding horse behavior. I would have liked to see more diversity in the riders, since not all horse lovers are white and female.
This book answered some of my own small questions that have been bugging me as I watch my own horses do their own thing so this book was really helpfully and it's different from the normal factual horse books I've been reading
