Java with the Judges is part of the Coffee Cup Bible Studies, a series of Bible studies for women in compact, workbook format that examine the "life and times" of certain Bible characters and the books of the Bible that pertain to them
Dr. Sandra Glahn is a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary. She is the author or co-author of more than twenty books, including the Coffee Cup Bible Study series. Her forthcoming work, Nobody's Mother: Artemis of the Ephesians in Antiquity and the New Testament, is slated for an October 2023 release.
I was quite disappointed with this study. It was a crash course on Judges that was at a highly caffeinated speed. There was a lot of reading each week, fine with me, not fine with most others in the study. There were supposed to be italicized personal questions. All of the questions were in the same font and none of them were in italics. Perhaps it went to print too early? I was SO excited to do one of the coffee cup Bible studies...I feel very let down by the entire thing.
An excellent bible study through Judges for the person who has a lotta life happening and wants to have book of the bible study being one of them. The format makes it so that you can travel lightly and continue being in Scripture and the questions help engage the mind and lightly provoke the heart.
This isn't an in-depth, micro-level study but instead you get a macro-view of Judges and a little bit to chew and wrestle with each week to keep you engaging in your conversations with Yahweh.
This is my second Coffee Cup Series Bible study by Sandra Glahn. I still love the compact format and inclusion of nearly all required scripture, but was not as impressed with the study questions and author commentary. Still, because I liked Cappuccino with Colossians so much, I'll try another of Glahn's studies in the future.
I loved this study! I had never done a formal study of Judges before. I learned so much and looked forward to each lesson. I love the format of these studies. I definately recommend this study.
Java with the Judges is part of the Coffee Cup Bible Studies, a series of Bible studies for women in compact, workbook format that examine the "life and times" of certain Bible characters and the books of the Bible that pertain to them. Each study is to be read over a four-to-six week period, and study sections are broken down into short, daily segments designed to fit reader's busy lifestyles. Understanding that time is precious, the Coffee Cup Bible Studies are patterned in such a convenient way that they can be read during brief windows of opportunity that allow for meditation and study (breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks, etc.). Scripture is provided from the NET Bible (New English Translation). making Bible study convenient for occasions when you can't carry a Bible. As Sandra sprinkles unconventional thought processes throughout the study, she shatters preconceived myths about the commonly known judges and sheds light on the more obscure ones. As a result, more emphasis is placed on the vulnerabilities of these men and women and the fact that God chose each of these flawed creatures to use for His greater glory.GR description
It is always a challenge to study the Old Testament. I liked the style of study, it is laid out well and the author asks thought provoking questions.
