Osprey Men at Arms #394

The German Army in World War I (1) 1914–15

Rate this book
In August 1914 the mobilization of Imperial Germany's 800,000-strong army ushered in the first great war of the modern age - a war which still stands as the greatest slaughter of soldiers in history. That German Army is also the best example of a particular period of military thought, when virtually the whole manpower of the European nations was integrated into mass conscript armies, supported by several age categories of reservists and by dedicated industrial and transport systems. In this first of three volumes the author offers an extraordinary mass of information, in text and tables, illustrated by photographs and colour plates.

The Osprey Men at Arms series are an excellent collection of books.
While they are jam packed full of the most nuanced details, they Information they contain, coupled with the pictures and drawings, mean they are an excellent resource for painters, modellers, historians or just the general interested individuals.

This one, focusing upon the general overview of the German Army at the outbreak of World War One is another fine example of Osprey's work and contribution to Military History. learning about the seperation, different uniforms and composition of the Imperial German Army is something rarely touched upon, and those that do, are often in a more complex and less engaging manner.

Typical of the Osprey’s Men At Arms series. Basic information of the subject matter, not enough to be super detailed but enough to give a working knowledge to start from if you find the subject interesting.

Like the other books in the Men-at-Arms series, this book covers the uniforms and equipment used for the first year of the war. It also includes sections on the organization of, and major formations of, the German army and a brief overview of operations.
