My First Signs
Children are able to communicate by signing before they develop the skills necessary for speech. By teaching sign language to children from as young as seven months we can help them to convey their emotions and their needs. This first signing guide for hearing and deaf children contains over forty key signs. Designed for parents and carers to share with babies, with it's simple and clear instructions and endearing illustrations, this book is an ideal introduction to signing. A helpful tip is given at the bottom of each page to help beginners get started. Makaton compatible.

I did like this book because it is something that the staff at the daycare does with infants to preschool. This also helps caregivers learn sign language and and this helps them communicate with children who who have a hard time hearing. The pictures make is easier to follow how the word is supposed to go and it is a step by step process for the teacher to learn to.
I think children in the preschool age group would be interested in it because they are more curious about different ways to talk to one another. They always want to try something new and sign language is hardly taught in daycare centers. I would motivate each child to try out each sign and will try to make them use it in the classroom.

Clear instructions for correct ways to arrange your hands, accompanied by sweet illustrations to make it interesting for little ones too.
There are a lot of signs in here and I’m not sure we would use them all but it is the best resource I could find that was good enough for both parent and child to use.
Bud likes to look at all of the pictures of other babies. A really lovely book

Great introduction to sign language. It includes descriptions on how to perform the sign and a big illustrations that kids can recognize. I checked it out from the library and plan on buying it soon.

June 27, 2011I placed this on all my age level shelves. It is a mini sign language dictionary. It's aa board book and looks very primary, but it would definitely do the trick to teach children basic words to communicate with a child who is hearing impaired.

It's a great way to start you and your baby on the road to ASL. Just what I was looking for!

Could have been structured to put the most commonly used words first, but otherwise clear.
This is British baby sign language, as opposed to American baby sign language.

6/3/26: Really great first primary on the first signs and a way to communicate with babies before they are able to talk. I know that my first grandchild did this and I'm eager to see the second do it as well. I liked being reminded of exactly what those signs were. Highly recommend.

This is an excellent introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), for people of all ages! It has single words with a good illustration and explanation how to do the sign. Highly recommended!

Great illustrations that teach signs well and are engaging. My toddler loves looking at the babies and talking about them.
It also has some tips for teaching babies how to sign.

We have learned a few signs differently, but our one-year-old loves reading this book and being reminded about the signs for different things.

Kubler's wonderful illustrations clearly show a number of baby signs for caregivers to use with their babies (and librarians too!)

Nice book with lots of images. Gives ideas of signs you could use but I only found a handful of them were really useful with my baby.
