No surprise there! ;)
First of all, this was far, far better than I expected it to be. I got a paper sack full of 'Luvvv Inspired' books from a library sale, and when I got them home and read the back of this one, I was positive I would despise it. A book about a bratty 2-year old, the pastor father that spoils her, and the daycare teacher (I hate teachers, period.) challenged with the both of them? It was going to be painful, I was sure.
Instead, it was delightful. Pastor Kent's message on the phone when he tried to ask her out had me laughing out loud for a GOOD long time. He was so... *likeable*. And typically male. Not pious and obnoxious like I was expecting. Shauna (teacher) handled things exactly the way that I would've - irritated to the nth and crankily. And while I hated 2yo Charity, her screaming, her tantrums, her bad behavior (no one child can do all that Charity does, btw)... it all came around for the good.
Which left me happily surprised.
BUT... I had trouble with the book. First, the outreach church wasn't a mega-church at all. It's like the author wanted to write about an outreach church but actually goes to an old-school church and didn't know what she was writing. (Which is also probably why I could stomach this book. Because we've gone to an outreach church. That never ends well.) The book never has any 'outreach', so thank goodness for that.
Second, Charity gets the chicken pox. In 2003 (going on the publishing date). They started vaccinating kids for CP in the late 90s, so unless this took place BEFORE that, Charity wouldn't be getting chicken pox... unless she'd just had a mild reaction to the vax. I know this, because I started popping out my babies in 2000, and they were vaxxing, then.
Third, WHY was Pastor Kent calling Shauna's father the day of their first date? Isn't that a little creepy, a guy who asks you out who phones your parents before the date to... what? Pump her daddy for information on the grown woman he's going on the date with? That's weird. Very wrong. Very creepy.
And fourth... Pastor Kent has only been widowed two years. ((If Charity is 2yo.)) Yet the whole book, the author says it has been SO LONG since he'd been with anyone. His mother wanted him to find someone for AGES. Pg 161: How many YEARS had it been since he felt this way about a woman? ((Two, actually.)) Two years is not unreasonable, so the constant alluding to how interminably long it's been was a little strange.
But mostly... I didn't hate it. When I expected to. So maybe I'll look up Janice Thompson, again.
This is another fun read by Janice Thompson. Sweet Charity is about Kent who is a widowed father to a two year old handful named Charity. Shauna is Charity's new preschool teacher. Sparks fly when they meet Kent and Shauna meet at a computer repair shop. The sparks continue when Shauna begins to attend the church where Kent is pastor. The only problem-They don't realize that they have Charity in common and Shauna has problems with Charity at school because she's going through the terrible twos. They have to work to find common ground in their differences over Charity.
This is also a sequel to two of Janice's other stories "A Class of Her Own" and "A Chorus of One" which are about Kent's mom and sister respectively.
I enjoyed this story and it kept me laughing like Janice's book always do..definitely recommended!!
This was a quick, fun read. Charity, a precocious toddler, brings together a pastor-in-training and a preschool teacher. When their computers get switched at the computer repair shop, Shauna and Kent are destined to be in each other's lives. Shauna is on a search to find her true calling. Kent is struggling to balance a fledgling career as interim pastor and life as a single parent. Charity becomes the link that binds them together.
This is a sweet read. Pacing is great in this book. The only complaint I have is that the storyline was almost predictable for me. I would have loved a surprise or two thrown in.
I loved this story. The characters were so real, I felt like I knew them. I fell in love with them especially precious Charity who was crying out for love. I love the inspirational thread. It is one I will want to read again.
This wonderful story teaches about how you look at people. Strong, Christian Characters and a lively story line make for a super read. Highly recommend.
