How to Read the Church Fathers
This latest addition to the How to Read series provides a basic introduction to the faith. life and thought of the great theological pioneers from the first centuries of the Ignatius of Antioch, Irenaeus of Lyons, Origen , Gregory of Nyssa, Hilary of Poitiers, Augustine of Hippo and many others. Like its companion volumes it contains texts, maps, chronological charts and illustrations, and is a highly attractive introduction to an important and often neglected subject. Adalbert Hamman is a Franciscan, a patristic secialist who teaches in Rome and has pioneered in setting up groups all over France to study the church fathers.

Excellent layperson's introduction to the Christian writers who contributed to answering the questions: Who is Jesus? What is his relationship with Jahweh? What happened at his Resurrection? What do his life, crucifixion, death and resurrection mean for humans and the universe? Hamman's descriptions of the Church Fathers are informative with well-chosen primary source readings. His chapter on Augustine is truly excellent.
