Harima Kenji has tried everything he can think of to attract his cute-but-dim classmate Tsukamoto Tenma. This time he's grown his beard to enormous lengths. But one snip of the scissors by wealthy beauty Sawachika Eri ruins everything! Can a delinquent punk and a stubborn, quick-to-anger rich girl end their long-running feud? Meanwhile, the inscrutable foreign exchange students from America in rival class 2-D face off against our hapless heroes from 2-C. The real "School Rumble" is about to begin!
Jin Kobayashi 小林尽 is a mangaka. His most famous work so far is School Rumble, He began drawing manga seriously during his college years, and won the Weekly Shonen Magazine's Rookie Award in 2001.
This was the sportiest volume!! (Good!!) But it was handled in a way I didn’t like!! (Oh no!!!!) This volume opens with a focus on the girl on the cover, Karen, who’s a veteran amateur wrestler. She’s insanely strong and good at what she does, however since it’s not “womanly” she’s embarrassed about it which is something that makes me really sad! And other characters are creeped out about it and scared of her because of her skill, which makes both her and myself feel even worse!!! God damn it, Japanese society!!!!!! Why do you gotta make a girl feel bad for being good at something like that? Tsk.
This volume also teases the upcoming sports festival a lot, so that’s exciting since I’m a track athlete myself (and there are many track events at said festival). There are zero anime/manga about sprinting as far as I know, so I’m always excited for sports festivals since that’s the only place I can see my sport in anime/manga. Though there is at least a distance running anime airing right now, Run with the Wind, which is really great, would recommend.
This volume also only made me giggle once, maybe twice, max. That wasn’t a total deal breaker or anything though, because it was still otherwise entertaining. I still really enjoy how all of the chapters and events connect back into each other and flow together, like a REAL story, not just a comedy manga!

Fifth review: School Rumble is awesome! It's always surprising me with new jokes and pranks. In this book, or volume, one of the main characters, Harima Kenji, was attracted to this other main character, Tsukamoto Tenma. He "heard" (eavesdropped) that Tenma liked guys with beards. So he basically grew his own beard... It was really, really long. One day, a rich, irascible teen, Sawachika Eri ruins his beard! Even though it was by accident, Kenji refuses to forgive her. Then when he hears that Tenma liked guys without beards, he shaves his beard clean and Eri gets furious. She shaves off his hair! What a laugh... If it were to happen in real life, I guess I wouldn't be laughing... Also, in the book, a new foreign exchange student comes into the school. She was from America and is now in class 2-D. Her name is Lala Gonzalez. She exceeds in lucha power, or a type of wresting. Then there are some stories about her. Lastly, there is a date in the book, between a woman's chest-loving boy, and a super strong flat-chest woman. Anyway, this book is just really funny. It's one of my favorite manga series.
