From the award-winning author of the Spy Dog series comes a wildly funny tale in HarperCollins Awesome Animals series the funniest fiction, starring the wildest of wildlife from leading authors. The Hole-in-the-Tree gang, led by Quickpaw Cassidy and The Sunshine Cub, is the most daring group of raccoons in town. But when these cheeky chancers carry out the biggest, boldest heist of their lives, they push the neighbourhood too far.The heat is on and the gang goes on the run in a wild adventure that ultimately teaches them that theres no place like home.
The story of me getting this book and then reading it, is that my housemate who is a librarian was sorting out books to be taken off shelves and nabbed this one for me because of my unhealthy obsession with racoons. I got a lot of joy being handed this. I dont often read for this young since I was the appropriate age and have never thought to write for this young, so the rating is based off a mixture of what I would have thought as a child reading this, and how well my author brain thinks this was put together. In short it was a lot of fun, like the illustrations that amuse me as a racoon lover, not too many so child me would feel grown up reading a nearly 200 page book. It kept me plot wise throughout, but points marked off cause I feel like it ended very quickly.
Read to my son at bedtime. Not my favourite Awesome Animals book, but a good story following the Hole-in-the-Tree Gang. The ending felt a bit rushed, and suddenly everyone loved them. It seemed a little too good to be true. The other downside was the use of the word varmint, I had to look up the term to find that it's part of American dialect. What's wrong with the word 'vermin' instead. Also, wouldn't racoon tails bleed when chopped off?

Very humorous story with easy but not-so-plain language. The four members of the gang are very distinctive in terms of character, and the author did a good job tailoring the details according to such distinctiveness. I love the part of Rocky's pizza raid most. Definitely will check the other stories in the series.
A gang of lovable raccoons cause havoc in a small town and end up having to flee to the city.
I enjoyed this story and ended up caring about the characters (raccoons). The story is pretty simple (the grass is not always greener on the other side) but is well told.
