I don’t often read fantasy, but I have been following this author and the premise of her story sounded intriguing. I was not disappointed and found I was unable to put the book down. This may be fantasy, but the characters are very real. Ms. McGyver has created characters you care about as they deal with their personal demons, suppressed feelings, magical powers and unrequited love. Alaura of Niamh, my favourite character, is both tough and gentle, as well as mysterious. Bronwyn and Alaura have ...more

I did find that I had a hard time getting into this book at the beginning. I could have just put it down at any point, never to be picked up again. But the summary, on the back, was intriguing and I continued on and at some point, a little later than usual, I was hooked and blew through the last half or more of the book. I will be definitely reading the next book in her Castle Keepers series- because now that I know the characters, I have a burning need to find out what happens.

After enjoying this book I have a hard time not believing its world actually exists somewhere, maybe in Nova Scotia. Fantastic in all senses of the word. Now on to book two in the series.

From my review of the book at amazon.com: This first book in Diane Lynn McGyver's Castle Keepers series is very well done and will keep you turning pages right to the end. What I particularly enjoyed in this solidly mainstream fantasy is its fresh focus on established themes. It's like an award-winni

4 stars for the book itself... the author knows her characters and their circumstances well, and writes as such.

3 stars for my enjoyment... I always felt like I was behind, trying to catch up and understand why things were happening.

Corporal Bronwyn Darrow is an honour-driven, hard working young dwarf (and not a Tolkien-esque dwarf, either) who is dedicated to rising in the ranks of the Aruam Castle. When he comes to be the legal guardian of Isla, a hauflin child, he learns, among other things, that there is more to life than work and status. Alaura of Niamh, a young enchantress with a mysterious past, becomes entangled in the lives of Bronwyn and Isla, and this is essentially where the story kicks off, following Alaura and ...more

Fantasy is one of my favourite genres to read. This story took me to a different place and even yet some things have stayed with me. Diane Lynn McGyver created a whole new world, with characters the reader quickly cares about, and suspense, drama and mystery to keep the pages turning.

Having said that, I would not recommend Shadows in the Stone to young readers as some battle scenes may be disturbing, and there are very descriptive scenes of relationship intensity and some violent sce

Diane Lynn McGyver fell in love with the fantasy genre when an awesome dungeon master introduced her to Dungeons & Dragons at the age of 13. From there, she landed into the world created by Terry Brooks and then the ones by Mercedes Lackey. By the age of 19, she was truly lost to the other realm.

Her future goals are to complete the 10-book series and to live in a peel tower with he
