I'm so glad I read this series- it really opened my eyes to the amount of sacrifice & suffering by the founding members of the church. Porter was such an interesting character too :)

This time the author really stretched the truth and just plain messed with facts and probability. In this book, Rockwell's dog from the beginning of the series is still alive. Dogs don't live into their 30s. I'm calling out the bs. Then there is the weird obsession the author created related to the father daughter relationship with Rockwell and his oldest child Emily. It bordered on creepy. Also, records show that Emily was only widowed by her first much older husband Hiram Gates. The other 3 of her 4 husbands lived into the 1890s. This is historical fiction but the author took too many liberties with facts. Like with Lot Huntington who died in 1862 not 1858 and who was not a teenager like the author portrayed. He was a married man not a child. Mr Dewey should have stuck closer to reality.

The final book in the series and the end of the adventure for a genuine old west outlaw/hero that is grossly ignored due to the affiliation he had with a Church that was and in some ways still is persecuted and ridiculed. I had no expectations when I started to read the first book and then quickly read the entire series and developed a deeper respect for it's subjects and their plight.

I think I would have given this 3.5 stars. It's still not the best writing and I can tell a lot of it is the imagination of the author as opposed to historical facts, especially the resolution. But I liked the story, mostly because this was the part of Porter Rockewell's story I didn't know. Very interesting life I'll say that.

There were a ton of typos in this book...that seemed weird, but overall I got a better picture of what things were like back then. This volume gets pretty gruesome. Porter Rockwell was a hero to a lot of people, but for years he struggled with alcohol and maintaining relationships. It's really a pretty sad story.

The only thing I wished this book would have included was how he died. It left us wondering so of course we searched on-line for the answer. Glad we were able to read this series of books!

Good ending to a great series. You still wanted to keep reading more about Porter Rockwell's life once you were done. Not as well written as 1 and 2 in the series, but still a great read.
