The writing and the strong ending definitely saved this book for me.

I want to start off with some quite "strong opinions". To put simply, I thought the characters were a bit silly. I didn't really enjoy the perspective of the Jiang Du. I know that she was supposed to be meek and innocent, ESPECIALLY growing up sheltered by her grandparents like she was. But I thought that the author kind of overdid it, and made her seem... well, a little stupid and ridiculously naive instead. I thought that she was cute sometimes, but most of the time she just felt overly passive, which made me frustrated. On the other hand, the Qing Yue is the typical "smart, popular, arrogant, rich, has a sad backstory" class of C-drama main characters. It's getting a little bit old, but I really didn't mind it that much. What bothered me most was that the author didn't seem to take time to properly develop their feelings for each other. It just didn't make any sense to me. Okay, maybe I can understand the puppy love from Jiang Du's perspective. Crushing on the popular, smart guy, it was cliche but I could get behind that. What I didn't understand was the execution of Qing Yue's feelings. There wasn’t enough groundwork for the intensity of his attachment. By about 60% of the book, I could only see them as maybe friends. Then suddenly, within a few chapters, Maybe I am just being ignorant...?

That said, I did cry in the second to last chapter. For all my complaints, the emotional beats worked. I was genuinely heartbroken at certain moments, especially as the book took a really emotional turn at around the 80% mark. The book hurt — and that has to count for something.

Also, I just HAVE to add that I loved loved LOVED getting to read the 'letters' that they wrote, and I just think people should incorporate more letters in love stories. I love letters. They're so intimate and honest and raw and did I say I love letters?

All in all, this was an emotional, albeit frustrating read. It's going to be a memorable one for sure.

Wow...if this isn't the saddest ending of a novel I've read, I don't know which one is.
Books I read usually have H.E.s so I'm not used to such a bad one. It leaves me feeling so Sorry for both of the protagonists. It's almost unnecessary.
It makes it worse that 魏 couldn't move on at all, stuck forever...
Bleak. Could've been a happy ending, 江 could've survived and lived , they could've met each other in health and in a good place in life,
but it isn't the case at all. It's the total opposite.
I'm not sure to what extent that is the reality.
But it does feel the set-up for such an ending is somewhat unnecessary.
I am disappointed to say the least
I've been looking forward to reading this book all year.
