Home Front U.S.A.: America during World War II
Since the first edition of this well-received title appeared, there has been an explosion of scholarly as well as popular interest in World War II and the home front. Informed by the latest historical literature and a deepened awareness of the accomplishments of the American civilian at home, this new edition has been thoughtfully revised, featuring a new prologue-taking up the question of "the good war"-and epilogue and added material on the atomic bomb, women, African Americans, American Jews, Japanese Americans, and the many other groups that, though relegated to the fringe of mainstream society, contributed in important ways to the nation's successful prosecution of its greatest challenge. Includes 20 illustrations, bibliographical essay, and index.

I really appreciate getting the perspective from the home front. So much wartime history focuses on the battles and those are important. But WW2 changed the world in so many other ways, I enjoyed exploring those.

Read this book for class. Winkler definitely understands the domestic issues facing the United States during WW2, but parts of this book can be a chore to read. A wealth of starting point information and resources for a historian studying this period can be found inside.

This monograph reads as a historiography in many ways, as Winkler cites a variety of other historians' arguments throughout each section he covers. It is well researched and provides a brief but thorough look at the American home front during World War II.
