Strokes At Midnight

Rate this book
Sometimes one night is all it takes...

A year and a half of therapy has barely put a dent in the guilt Amanda McGregor still feels over her ex boyfriend. And she hasn’t even mentioned to her therapist how much she dislikes her body.

So when her flatmate Alison comes up with a plan to help Amanda get over her guilt - a plan that involves alcohol and flirting…and maybe a little pool sharking…Amanda goes along for the ride…

…Levi Fox has finally extricated himself from a toxic relationship, and he just wants to focus on his next goal - qualifying for the Australian Olympic Rowing Team. He’s not looking for a rebound hookup, and he’s definitely not looking for love when he heads out to his local pool bar for a few drinks with his mates…

Sparks fly when the pair meet, and things between the two escalate quickly. But life has a way of throwing a spanner in the works.

Levi faces a bombshell that explodes right in Amanda’s face, flinging the pair headfirst into a situationship with an expiry date that neither of them want to discuss. And with Levi’s ex stirring up trouble, dredging up Amanda’s past and present pain, is the mind blowing chemistry these two share enough for them to build something worth fighting for?

Layla has been writing stories ever since she could pick up a pencil and shape words. The most memorable works of her tween and teen years included a rap version of 'Little Red Riding Hood' and an embarrassingly spicy high school camp/murder mystery (which was possibly a sign of things to come).

Layla studied Communications at Newcastle University in NSW, Australia, and worked as a buyer and marketing coordinator in the education sector, before joining her husband in the family retail business. That's still her day job (she's very lucky her boss is pretty lenient, or she'd never get any writing done).

Layla lives on an acreage in regional NSW with her husband, two rambunctious children, four mostly feral cats, and an ancient German Shepherd who still thinks he's a puppy. Oh, and some angry Plovers that swoop her every spring without fail.

Omg. Wow.

This book had me screeching like a hyena and kicking my feet. Levi is such a green flag, he is seriously perfection.. Everything that came out of this man's mouth had me giddy.

The romance? Perfection.
The characters? Perfection.
The plot? Perfection.

If a book could have a song, this would absolutely be 'I wanna be yours' by the Arctic Monkeys.. Ugh.. So much love. Utterly obsessed.

I firstly want to thank Layla for giving me the opportunity to read an arc. I’m so grateful.

This is the first book I’ve read in this type of genre and I couldn’t have picked a better book to start with. It’s such a wild ride and I loved every second.

Amanda and Levi were such relatable characters. Everything they went through and the way they spoke felt so real.

The spice was next level. Layla knows how to write those hot and heavy scenes to perfection.

The ending has left me wanting more books. I can’t wait to read more by Layla.

Highly recommend picking this one up. You won’t be disappointed.

I loved this book! Book 2 in the Aussie Cravings Series and I'm working my way through the all.

Levi is an absolute sweetheart and isn't afraid to show his feelings. The trauma he holds with in is so sad and I feel for him.

I love Alison and Amanda's friendship and the banter between them.

Layla knows how to write spice and this book was definitely spicing the spicy scenes.

Would absolutely recommend this book.

Omg this book has everything, and I couldn't get enough of it! Levi Fox is hot as hell, and Amanda is so relatable. The storyline was fantastic, and I absolutely did not want this book to end! I felt every emotion possible during this book, and I will remember this one for a long time and will recommend it to everyone! Layla Pine, what an amazing Australian Author!

I was lucky enough to be sent an ARC of Strokes of Midnight. Thank you Layla Pine for sending one through

I don’t know what she put in this magnificent piece of art but I was absolutely HOOKED from the moment I started this. It’s been a long time since I’ve been compelled to stay up to finish the story but it was so good!
Super super spicy in the most delicious way
I don’t know how she made me like every single one of my least favourite tropes but I was literally obsessed with all of the characters

Levi was incredible and really well written, but my fav characters HAD to be Mac and Amanda, I know we got her in the first story but her character growth in this book was perfect and I loved getting to know her more

I absolutely devoured this book and I am so excited for the next one

I loved this book. The FMC Amanda, was super relatable. Her body image struggles and they way that affects her relationships. I loved Levi, our MMC. The way he loved and adored Amanda for exactly who she is. They both had their own issues to deal with and I loved the journey their relationship took. And it was set in Australia!!

“Honey, I want all your little, insignificant moments.” - Levi.

We meet Amanda as Mel’s bestie in Ace My Heart. She was shy, supportive and overall the kind of friend you’d want. So when I found out she was getting her own story, I was excited to read it.

This book picks up exactly where Ace My Heart finishes but with a whole different perspective.

I absolutely loved Amanda. I think she’s relatable, caring and just an overall beautiful person. I really enjoyed reading about how the events that happened in Ace My Heart impacted her and to go on her journey of healing.

Levi is cocky in the beginning and a little bit crass but as you get to know him, you realise he’s built a persona from trauma to protect himself from getting hurt.

Amanda and Levi are perfect for each other. Sure they started out as a little bit of fun but when they fell… They fell HARD. These two help heal each other from past trauma’s and teach one another to love themselves as well as each other.

These characters have major development and growth. They both have significant issues they have to deal with, heal from and over come throughout the entire story. I think Layla delivered some amazing characters and wrote them beautifully.

I also really enjoyed how Layla weaved light hearted moments and down right comical situations all throughout this story. I may have laughed and had secondhand embarrassment for Amanda at one point.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story, the writing, the characters and the journey of self love and healing. It’s beautiful.

It was good to get a little life update from Mel and Joel in this book too. I also love Alison, Dani and Brad. I’m secretly hoping Alison and Brad totally get their own book.

I cannot wait to read Xander’s story. That little snippet was just a complete tease. I need to know more. Lol

4.5 Stars.

There was a few things I didn’t like such as the severe fat shaming that occurred. Some of it seemed to me, to be a little over the top. I also found Levi called Amanda ‘Honey’ a little too much.

Ace my heart (book 1) follows Mel and Joel and Strokes at midnight stars Amanda and Levi as our main characters. I am fast becoming a huge fan of interconnected stand alones. Yes you could read out of order, but it's definitely best to read in order to really get those little cameos.

Amanda is the best friend of Mel and I loved reading her story. I also really appreciated the small tidbits we got of Mel and Joel in this one.

Amanda and Levi meet on a random night out and it is definitely lust at first sight. They are a case of opposites attract but one thing that they do have in common is that they both have A LOT going on in their personal lives. Amanda is taking steps to recover from an extremely traumatic event plus dealing with fatphobia on top of her own insecurities about herself.
Levi also has past traumas, a recent break up and is training for the Olympics. He is very sweary and has been dubbed *danger boy* (love it 🤣).
Both of them have so much on their plate I felt like I needed a therapy session myself just reading about it.

One things for sure though - these two fit together so well and are just what each other needed in the end. This book takes the reader through so many hurdles and emotions before finally tying everything up so beautifully at the end.

There was a drunken text scene that just had me both rolling with laughter and also cringing for the characters. There really needs to be an app that puts all messages pending until sobriety 🤣

I cannot WAIT to read the next few that are upcoming. Xanders brother - a vet with a reality TV show, and Dom. A mysterious bestie 👀

Thank you Layla for the ARC copy - you are the best! 🤩

This is my second book is Layla Pines and the second book in the Aussie Cravings series. (This review contains spoilers for the first book in this series)

Amanda is still healing from her relationship from 18 months ago when her then boyfriend, Thomas, ended up being a murderous stalker and was only using her to get closer to her best friend Melanie Black. Since then Amanda has been in serious therapy and is working through her insecurities, but is still worried that no one will love her or find her attractive. Her roommate, Allison, forces her to go out have a drink and flirt with a guy to rewrite the story of flirting with men.

Levi has just ended his long-term toxic relationship and is celebrating with his rowing crew. When he sets eyes on Amanda, he absolutely needs to have her and will do anything to be able to get to know her.

I absolutely loved this book and I loved that it is set in Australia, which made it a lot more relatable. There are some themes that people could find traumatic so please check your trigger warnings.

I did love the ending, although it was a little bit triggering for me due to my personal history, and I would have loved for this ending to be my happy ending but otherwise it was an amazing book and I am very quickly becoming obsessed with this series.

“Seven, fourteen, twenty-one, twenty-eight, thirty-five …”

4⭐️This book is great. It’s a really unique story. I enjoying every minute of it. One you think you have plot figured out, something comes along to bust that bubble. Very entertaining. I really love their instalust vibes. Super sweet characters both of them! Like just the cutest. They’re really endearing yet spicy together.

One of the biggest plot threads of this book surrounds the FMC’s journey of healing her harms associated with her beliefs around her physical appearance. While I, as a goddess size female, appreciate this journey, some of the content of this theme felt overplayed for me and didn’t really match my lived experience in this space. As such I felt a bit disconnected from this aspect and it felt quite excessive at times with some of the other side characters responses to her. Like are people actually that offensive to others?! Perhaps I just have a different lived experience of this.

That piece aside I really enjoyed the authenticity of the main characters and their relationship journey. It felt genuine in terms of the time spent to manage and navigate their feelings. It was a whirlwind of emotional turmoil and healing. Definitely a ride!
Great read!

Whether you've read Ace My Heart (AMH) or not, Strokes at Midnight (SAM) which is second in the series is a fabulous read. I do definitely recommend reading AMH first as SAM references events and characters from it, but you could read as a standalone.

I loved this book from the dedication right through to the end. Amanda is our female main character (FMC), who's plus sized and a virgin, and Levi is our tattooed, piecered, Olympic rower male main character (MMC). It's an Insta-love, opposites attract scenario when they meet in a bar by chance and have a one night stand.

With past trauma on both sides, which I think is handled realistically by both main characters throughout their journey, this turns into a right person, wrong time with him falling harder story as they reconnect. Although at times I did want to slap the FMC for how she dealt with things, I can also acknowledge I'd probably react the same way in the moment and really, truly appreciated the way her struggles with body image were explored as someone who experiences very similar feelings to Amanda a lot of the time.

One trope I normally cannot stand is the pregnanct/surprise pregnancy trope, which does happen in this story. But, I can honestly say I loved the way Layla wove this into the book as a device that genuniely moved the plot along.

And as a bonus as an Aussie reader reading a book by an Aussie author, I also adored all the references to things like Bondi, Tim Tams and the like that we usually don't get in a lot of fiction.

Finally - thank you to Layla for sending me an ARC prior to publication. I loved AMH so much and was very excited to get to continue in the universe. Team Mac for the win now!

Get your oars out and be ready to row into this amazing romance by Layla Pine. It’s realistic, honest and full of romance novel goodness.

Enter MMC Levi aka danger boy who is so not who our beautiful FMC Amanda would swipe right on. He is an Olympic rower and she is a nurse training to be a midwife.

We have two people trying to walk through airport security with excess baggage trying to navigate through every hurdle. It’s so relatable and realistic. It is real and exactly how life can be complicated and not what it seems. It shows the real honest truth of life and how we see ourselves. We love that. Well we don’t like when life is shit but we love that in a book!

There is surprise pregnancy and I’m notorious for disliking this trope. However this is on the very limited list of where it works!!!! It’s not the usual type either.

Anywho, you should definitely get into the Aussie Cravings Interconnected standalone series. It’s so worth it.

FYI
Also there is a side character who is a rude ass bitch. Yes she judges everyone so I’m judging her. Poop it. Be ready to want to punch the screen at her obnoxious behaviour.

After Ace my Heart and Greenrock, Layla Pine is still on my auto read author list!
I can’t wait for more from the Author!

Thank you to author Layla Pine for the opportunity to be an arc reader for this book.

Fav Quote/s:
“You Slay me, Honey”

“We can’t be what other people need from us, until we can be what we need from ourselves.”

Levi has just come out of a terrible 3 year relationship and is finally free and not looking for anything serious.

Amanda is still dealing with guilt and self esteem issues after her breakup from her ex. Her friend Alison has a plan to get Amanda back out there with a night of drinking and maybe some flirting.

When Levi and Amanda meet there is an undeniable attraction that leads them to both break their own rules.
However their own personal issues threatens to stand in the way of their relationship.

I really enjoyed this book. It is written in duo POV and I loved Levi’s character from the start, he is rough around the edges but a sweetheart inside.

This book had me interested from the beginning, there was a good amount of spice and a good amount of romance. It was well written and there were lots of moments where I gasped or laughed out loud.

I’m looking forward to reading the next book when it comes out.

As part of the ARC team, I was able to read and review this book early. This is my honest review.

Tattooed on my heart!

This book had me in a grip the whole time! From the very beginning, I was hooked! Levi and his dirty mouth is thigh clenching and panty melting! We get thrown into the heat right off the bat and the chemistry is through the roof with Amanda and Levi and it sears the pages and you want to take a cold shower.

The emotions I felt through this book were so real and I could feel everything the characters were feeling and portrayed beautifully. Amanda is struggling with the emotional trauma from her ex, as well as body image issues stemming from her persona of her weight, but also what she endured from him. Levi is also dealing with a crazy ex and when he finally feels free, gets hit with news that has him reeling. Levi is so swoon worthy and just oozes confidence and s3x appeal, especially with the bad boy persona, tattoos (and the stories behind them), and a pierced member 😏. Amanda is timid, (and a virgin) yet Levi is able to bring her out of her shell piece by piece. Their first time is beautiful and smoldering at the same time! I love how Levi is so attentive and makes sure she has just what she needs! #ovariesexploding

Side note: I need more Mac. You already know this lol!

Without spoilers, they will both go through the ringer and really have to get to a point of trust to see a future together. The twists and turns had me surprised, even when I was hashing out what I thought was going to happen (it’s just how I read). I love talking out my hypotheses with Layla and it’s so fun to read for her. There are some super saucy parts and some sweetness to top it off! I didn’t want to put it down and I can’t wait for more of these characters (mainly our resident sexy vet!).

I have been looking forward to Amanda's story after finishing Ace My Heart and it didn't disappoint. Amanda deserved the best and she got it in Levi. His absolute want for her and his unwavering affection came through so well in the writing. Oh and did I mentioned he's pierced!
I was so emotionally invested in the storylines which is a credit to the author and her writing style.

I would recommend reading Ace My Heart first; however, it is not necessary but will provide you with a better understanding of Amanda's background and why she struggles so much with her emotional trauma. There are some heavy topics touched upon in this book so please check the content warning on Layla's website if you have any triggers. If not go in blind and enjoy the ride!

"It had never been my style - to go out and chase tail. I'd been a serial monogamist since my early twenties."- Levi

"Just so you know, you have free rein with my body. Anything you want to do to me is on the table"."- Levi

This was such a complex book - it was detailed and the story really felt whole.

I loved the characters (minus zilla), they felt real. Amanda is an FMC I think I relate to and watching her struggle and attempt to build herself back up made me so happy.
Levi’s love for Amanda and his need to show her that she is worthy really showcased what kind of a person he is.

Strokes at Midnight is a page turner and I could not put it down. I immediately fell for the dirty talking bad boy, Levi Fox and the way he worshipped everything about Amanda. The characters in this book are three dimensional, yes - even Zilla! And I loved how there was a real theme of growth from everyone. I never thought anyone could dethrone Joel Herbert from Pine’s Ace My Heart, but Levi definitely gave him a run for his money. What I love about Pine’s writing is that she keeps you guessing from the get go and there are twists and turns you don’t see coming. She is an auto-buy author for me and I cannot wait to read the rest of the books in this series!

I LOVED THIS BOOK SO SO MUCH.

like i’m obsessed with both characters and their story.

i think there was so kind of crack in this book because i was hooked from page one and i could not put it down for a single second.

amanda js our curvy sexy relatable fmc and honestly i would read a whole book just about her and her day to day activities, she just means the absolute world to me.

levi is our olympic rower, sexy tattooed/pierced bad boy and his life is kind of a roller coaster but the way he is always putting amanda first? and the way he talks and acts?? sign me up.

while this couple experiences a couple bumps in their journey you find yourselves just consistently rooting for them, and seeing them come out on top? like i said i’m sure that’s what drugs must feel like.

so grateful i for am arc copy of this book, i heavily related to amanda and it was just so lovely to read about <3

This book was EVERYTHING. I was fortunate enough to be an ARC reader for this book and let me tell you…

You want a read that’s lighthearted and a cute rom com, with a bit of deceit and trauma and suspense? Read this

It truly has everything. I am Amanda and she is me. I have struggled with body dysmorphia my whole life. Such an interesting concept to write a story around that for women. I love the love story! I got a bit annoyed with how flighty Amanda was but it was all for a good cause and made u want to keep reading.

I even predicted the end a bit. Which is a good thing for me cuz if it doesn’t end how I want it to I get frustrated! There was even a few more twists in there! Def 10/10 recommend

3.75 stars

So, I initially went to give this 3 stars, but I do think a lot of the issues I have with this book are *kinda* minor. So have upped stars.

I was excited to read this as im really wanting to support indie Australian authors, and I heard this book had a lot of fat-positive themes. I read this as a stand alone, which I kinda regret because I believe some of the interesting info of this book was covered in the first book… however, it definitely is it’s own stand alone story.

Things I liked about this book.
- Male Main Character (MMC) adoration of Female Main Character (FMC).
-dual perspective, which really helped with the first point.
-body fat and body image being a significant element of the story (and especially, being fat AND beautiful, not denying fatness)
-great sexual chemistry and really well written sex scenes. Like, really great. Like, really really great. Good quantity too haha
-Drool-worthy MMC with admirable qualities
-ALSO a flawed MMC with an unjustified dislike of another character who is lovely (Mac)
-on occasion, use of the word “penis” instead of a million other slang terms.

Things I didn’t like about this book.
-MMC seemed very much written by a woman 😂 the female equivalent of “she titted boobily”, but instead he’s about to c*m because of the sound of her laugh 😂. Did it go too far to make him perfect? Yes. Was it a deal breaker? Definitely not.
-okay, so penis is both a positive and a negative. Sometimes, particularly in dialogue, it’s just unrealistic to think that people (especially these characters) use the term penis during sex.
-I hate pet names, and excessive use of names during sex scenes. “Honey” is definitely a better one, but still feel it was overused.
-whilst fat positivity is awesome, there was a significant amount of criticism of certain female body choices, in particularly, breast implants. Way too much negativity went into describing the character as fake or vapid. And if this was only based on them being a horrible person that would have been fine, but a lot focused on their physical appearance, which I don’t think was the purpose of the book.

SPOILERS BELOW
-for me, the murderous ex was a point of interest, however it is very lightly touched on (presumably because it was heavily touched on in the first book).
-found the paternity question to be very predictable. So much so I’m annoyed the MMC didn’t think of it earlier. HOWEVER, I did like the outcome of that. Although it was a bit annoying that it didn’t need to deal with the complexities of what would have happened if the opposite outcome was true… definitely interesting.
-best friend Theo turning suddenly villainous seemed a bit out of left field.
-mild criticism for ending on a cunnilingus scene rather than more unprotected sex 🤭 but that is definitely personal preference 😂

In conclusion, did enjoy. Not perfect, but great chemistry and just what I was in the mood for. Would 100% read a Mac book if one is written in the future. Definitely give this author a shot, and recommend this book to plus-sized women.

3.75 ⭐️ I really liked this book, as did I love Levi and Amanda (relationship & as individuals). It was also really refreshing to read of a female MC who fit the stereotypical image of a romantic lead. I think her concerns and insecurities regarding her weight were discussed really well.

However, there were a few things that really frustrated me about the book & prevented it from being a higher rating:

1. The Australian references - As an Australian myself, I loved to see a book set in Aus (even if it’s the typical Sydney setting). However, the references were constant and incredibly cringeworthy at times. I felt the author was throwing them in there just to remind everyone the characters were Australian. Maybe a non-Australian reader wouldn’t care, but I just couldn’t stand to read these bits 😅

2. Too many dramatic twists/moments - The ex situation was valid, as was the traumatic pasts of both characters. However, by the end it seemed that so many unnecessary moments were being thrown in (like the paternity test and theo’s outburst). It felt like watching a dramatic tv series and it really just felt like a storyline was being added for the sake of it.

3. Insufferable characters - Again, I know the likes of Emilee’s horrible personality was relevant to the story but overall, besides the MCs and Levi’s brother, I disliked just about everyone and the way they spoke. It was unrealistic at times and a bit childish.

I enjoyed the book, but not as much as I wanted to.

Funny, nerve-racking, shocking, wholesome, heartwarming, sensuous.
Just a few words I would use to describe this fantastic story.

Layla is definitely a master at tugging at the heart strings, but also never fails to get you laughing through the difficult emotions.
I fell head over heels for Levi and Amanda, and while reading about the tension filled turn of events that were shaping their story, they felt so real that I found myself talking to them like they could hear me. The use of a dual point of view format worked perfectly for these characters, due to each of them struggling and coming to terms with traumatic life events, both past and present.
I also really enjoyed the way that the side characters had their own stories within the main plot and how they were cleverly constructed to support the main characters.
Layla writes fictional characters that are each unique, that will find their way onto your bookshelf and into your heart.
This story will have you reaching for the tissues, a packet of TimTams, as well as the next book in the series.

Strokes at Midnight is the second book in the Aussie Cravings series and I definitely recommend reading book 1 (Ace my Heart) before delving into Levi and Amanda's story, due to plot spoilers.
You won't regret picking up this amazing Australian romance series.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ loved it! great chemistry and characters, though a few moments didn’t fully hit. still highly recommend.
🌶️🌶️: mild spice, around 2 to 4 scenes, still tame sex scenes with a slight touch of kink and still romance focused

sometimes one night changes everything. amanda mcgregor is still haunted by guilt over her ex and the insecurities she keeps buried, so when her flatmate drags her out for drinks and a little harmless flirting, she doesn’t expect to meet levi fox. he’s a rower chasing his olympic dream and definitely not looking for love. but one night turns into something neither of them planned, and when secrets, exes, and expiration dates threaten what they’ve built, they have to decide if their connection is worth the risk.

this book was great, but it definitely felt a little too long with so many sort of progressive discussion points packed in so it lost some momentum. that said, i really loved how emotional and heartfelt the story was. i especially appreciated the themes of healing and self-acceptance woven through the story. the characters were adorable together, sweet and genuinely supportive in a way that felt real. their chemistry was both soft and spicy, and the journey they went on had so much depth.

tropes: sports romance (rowing), one night stand, plus size fmc
triggers: verbal abuse, mental health discussions

This book had everything in it for me!!! This series is just getting better with each book. I loved Ace My Heart & I adored this one just as much (maybe even a little more).

Rated: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶🌶🌶🌶

I could totally relate to Amanda & her insecurities. Amandas character was so genuine that you couldn't help but love her as she wore her heart on her sleeve. Amanda had a lot of baggage from her previous relationship & I loved how she knew when it was important to take time & focus on herself. Levi was great at helping to push her out of her comfort zone without it being to overwhelming (the I want game!).

Levi has his own struggles throughout this book & while most of them resolved I hope we get a bit more closure on his relationship with his father (I still have so many questions there) for example. But the thing about Levi is no matter what he puts his all into everything ever when his world is falling apart. I am so curious to learn if he manages to win that gold medal at Paris???

Some of the themes/tropes in this book are:

*Sports Romance
*Contemporary Romance
*Virgin MFC
*One Night Stand
*Surprise Pregnancy
*Verbal Abuse
*Mental Health & Wellbeing
*Plus Size MFC

I am so excited to read the next book in the series!!!
