I am an urban naturalist and urban ecologist, both by profession and by interest. So, I really, really wanted to like this book. But, I found it was a bit of a let down. I recognize that I am not the target audience age-wise (or at least I hope I am not based on the writing) but, while there are many good points to this book, there were also some concerns.

City Critters by Nicholas Read is a look at all kinds of animals that share the space with city and suburban human dwellers. Beyond the usual kind brought to mind such as raccoons, bears, deer, cougars, coyotes,etc., depending upon where you live, this book also focuses on marine mammals such as manatees, whales, dolphins, seals, otters. Really really wanted to love this book...but I didn't. It had many interesting facts but often repeated information (example..page 86 red ear sliders...page 97, red ear sliders again) and although sometimes humorous, wasn't captivating...and it needs to be for its target audience (very urban kids who are often sadly detached from the natural world). What kid is going to relate to a sentence like this "The only difference is that in Ontario the people making these decisions wear Gore-Tex and faux ...more

Very interesting. This is intended as a children's book so there weren't quite enough details for me, but still interesting.
