In The A Testimony of God's Faithfulness to a Bipolar Christian, gives six practical steps that anyone can apply as they search for victory. The author, Nancy Hagerman, knows her subject well. This book details her struggle with bipolar disorder from the brink of suicide to the heights of mania. Nancy tells how Jesus took her from the pit of despair and taught her to trust Him. She learned that Jesus, instead of condemning her for lack of control, treasured her and wanted to help. Nancy offers much-needed help to Christians struggling with depression or mania, and to their families. This book will also prove to be a valuable resource to friends and family members as they seek to understand and support loved ones battling the illness.

Part One “The Bottomless Pit” - 4 stars
Nancy’s story is, in many ways, very different from mine. However, there were several components that resonated deeply and specifically with me, and they led me to thoughtful reflection that may not have happened otherwise. It was helpful to see these things in someone else’s story and recognize where the lies/truths were and be able to then think about my own experience.
Part Two “The Solid Rock” - 3 stars
Some valuable information. The biggest problem I had with this section was that it turned into an odd mix of theology and how-to in a way that didn’t quite work. I was disappointed that the narrative from the first section didn’t continue on so we could see how these truths and action steps played out in the authors life.
I also feel that the book is inappropriately marketed on the back cover as “a valuable resource to friends and family members as they seek to understand and support loved ones battling the illness”. This book is a beautiful testimony of God’s faithfulness to Nancy. However, much of the book, even the part geared towards practical application of biblical truth, is specific to her experience and could easily lead to false generalizations. This is not adequately warned against or recognized in the book.
