Each of the four parts represents a season in the life of the peasants — Autumn (published in 1904), Winter (published in 1904), Spring (published in 1906), and Summer (published in 1909). This division underlines the relationship of human life with nature.

Reymont decided to write about peasant life because of historical events, which took place in Polish villages in the e

I see on goodreads that not many people have read this book. I picked it up after looking at the list of Nobel Laureates for Literature and this author was commended for Chlopi, or Peasants, which this book is the first of. Seeing strong reviews, I went to my library and took it out. I am very happy to have taken it out since it is, even in translation, very beautiful in both setting and symbolism, tying together humans and the seasons. I strongly recommend anyone who wants a great read in reali ...more

Many years ago I set myself the goal of reading something by each Nobel Literature laureate. I often diasagreed with the selection committee and eventually gave up that plan, but I did enjoy a dozen or so selections. Actually quite an enjoyable read. Makes me want to learn a bit more about Polish traditions around marriage and family. I also now need to read the other three books in this cycle.

The book let me in to the previous century's Poland village. It was like a village sprung to life under autumn sky right in front of my eyes..
I was surprised dat the topography, culture, customs, festivals vary across the world but the very essence of villager's life is the same. In the book, in polish village lipka, land is most important to a farmer and people feel proud to call themselves Peasants by profession. Book describes everyday life of a polish peasant in autumn so beautifully in a re

Well, since I've read it in original. I hate the language used in it, it's that old polish used on country side which is not used anymore. Maybe it wouldn't be that bad if it was written in modern language but as it is, it's very hard to understand and this is making it a torture to read for a high school student.
