This time the dead are hungry…

Rachel Miller doesn't just see dead people, she rescues them. As a member of The Order of Rescue Mediums, she spends most of her time helping stubborn spirits move on from the world. But after she learns the details of three brutal murders, she knows the culprit can only be a reaper, an undead monster that relentlessly stalks its victims to fe

Lost Souls, Episode two.

If you read my review for book one, The Stubborn Dead, you'll know I had some reservations about the format this series is set to be released in. Which basically is to have each book be novella-length, and to have short, punchy action-filled "episodes" with an overarching character development. I wasn't sure I could get behind that idea, since novellas often just aren't long enough for me to get fully engaged in.

Well, I changed my mind. I'm a female, it's allowed.

Rachel was such a kick butt heroine. I loved everything about her from the way she could hold her own to the amazing abilities she has. It was really cool to see her powers at work and the way the author described them. I really felt like I could see what Rachel could see every time she used her abilities. It was like I could see all the stages coming together. Rachel was also such a sweet person with the way she would help others and take care of people. That was evident in the special interest ...more

4.5 stars. Well written, with likable characters and a riveting story - this one had it all!

Rachel and her new foster, Kit, are in search of a reaper who has already killed three supernaturals. Joined by Luke, the reaper's next intended victim, they are in a race to find the reaper before he can do any more harm.

I'm ready for a full-length novel from this author!

Short but So, So Good
Medium Rachel Miller is pulling double duty, serving Vancouver in her job as a member of the Order of Rescue Mediums and acting as a supernatural sensei to newbie rodach Kit Eckeles, the young man she saved from being exorcised a few weeks previously. Of course, the ORM doesn't know she has the sometimes-wraith living with her. That would definitely be awkward to explain.

It's also the least of Rachel's problems, because three bodies have turned up at the Vancouver General Ho

The Ravenous Dead, by Natasha Hoar, is the second novella in the Lost Souls series. Unfortunately, I have not read the first book (The Stubborn Dead) so I am a little behind the eight ball as it were. Rachel Miller is the protagonist and a member of the Order of Rescue Mediums. Her step-mother Clarissa Bellway seems to be one of the main people in charge. ORM is dedicated to the removal of stubborn o

The Ravenous Dead is the second novella in the Lost Souls series by Natasha Hoar. This is a fantastic urban fantasy series featuring protagonist Rachel Miller. This tale finds Rachel dealing with a reaper. It delivered suspense, mystery, paranormal creatures and kick-ass action. I quickly consumed this and was left wanting more!

The tale picks up where the Stubborn Dead, the first novella ended. Protagonist Rachel Miller is a rescue medium and a member of the Order of Rescue Mediums. She removes

My Thoughts: This is the first book published by Carina Press that I've read, so I was surprised by the length of The Ravenous Dead. Not unhappily surprised.

I love the concept of Rachel being a Rescue Medium and having to fight a Reaper-monster. It's what made me pick up the book. I was pleased to find the worldbuilding is filled with innovative ideas. In the opening scene we meet Rachel mid-sword fight, and the action doesn't stop there.

The review
I really enjoyed the second instalment of the ‘Lost Souls’ series about a rescue medium who banishes souls trapped on earth to the place they really need to be with the help of the ‘presences’. In the last book she took on a Rodach – Kit – who has become a fixture in her home as she attempts to train him in controlling his powers. Her cousin turns up informing her of three murders that bear striking similarities to a case that she would rather forget. So along with Kit she investigates

Recommends it for: Fans of Urban Fantasy and the supernatural!
Too short for my taste but so entertaining!

Rachel Miller has a lot on her paranormal plate, she's an amazing medium who aids spirits cross over and is also currently playing the role of teacher for protege Kit Elkeles, a teenage boy with some extraordinary powers of his own. When the paranormal community is threatened by a murderer, Rachel has the suspicion that a demon from her past has resurfaced, a reaper, set out to consume Kit's soul next. To get this murderer off the streets she'll have to

I was approved for this read on Netgalley, and excited to start it. I love the cover, and the synopsis. No idea though, that this was part of a series, and 'The Ravenous Dead' was book 2. So when I realized that, I was a bit disappointed and apprehensive. I HATE reading series out of order. But I just didn't have the time to go looking of the first book to read it first for this month, so I started it.

Honestly, I enjoyed this book. I was able to follo

Actually a 3.5 star review.

The Ravenous Dead is a story with a kick. Kit, the Rodach and Rachel, the Rescue Medium make an unexpected team. Kit is something of a protege to Rachel and she feels very protective towards him. Yet at the same time he provides her with some much needed friendship and he could provide her with something more.

Luke of the Upper Coven adds new tension to the mix. Whether or not the author does more with the love triangle in the next book is something we’ll have to see. W

The Ravenous Dead by Natasha Hoar is a new ebook-only novella published by Carina Press. Continuing Carina Press's trend of releasing series of related novellas, The Ravenous Dead follows on from The Stubborn Dead. I haven't read The Stubborn Dead and, while I could guess vaguely what it might have been about, I didn't feel I needed to have read it before The Ravenous Dead nor that The Ravenous Dead was likely to have spoiled the earlier story for me (of course, I might be wrong on that second p ...more

I’ve felt dissapointed by every Urban Fantasy novel I’ve read this year. Could it be that it always involves a female protagonist who is in Law Enforcement and spends most of the novel talking instead of fighting or solving crime? First off, it begins exactly where the first book left off, leaving anyone who hadn’t read the initial book in the series completely flabergaster. Maybe its a pet peeve of mine, but I prefer my sequels to be stand-alone books. The Ravenous Dead felt more like an episod ...more

Rachel Miller medium extraordinaire is back fighting another creature in The Ravenous Dead. This time she has Kit Elkeles along for the ride as she teaches him about the paranormal world, while he is learning to control his Rodach abilities. They are up against a soul stealing reaper, who is preying on paranormals. When he locks onto Kits scent it becomes even more important for Rachel to stop him before Kit’s soul is lost, just like her mentor.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, The Stubborn Dead, while it too was a shorter read it was completely action packed and just an amazingly fun read, which is why I knew the sequel was going to be just as good and hopefully answer some of my questions and (meet my expectations) from the first one.

Of course I had nothing to worry about as far as meeting my expectations went, this story opens with Rachel and Kit (yay so glad we get more of him) training and trying to discover more a

This book picks up a few weeks after The Stubborn Dead ended. Rachel has taken on a roommate, Kit, who needs help adjusting to his new found supernatural powers. I really like the dynamic between these two, especially because it’s not romantic. They are protective of each other, and Rachel feels a need to mentor him because of her past, which we learn more of.

In The Ravenous Dead, Rachel has to deal with a reaper who is leaving bodies around town. I thought this take on reapers was interesting a

I'm going to have to go back and read the first book. I enjoyed it but I did feel a little lost with the world. Hopefully reading the first one will pull it in to perspective.

Even with this minor issue I found I enjoyed the book.

Rachel is a rescue medium and a very capable woman. She kicks ass and has a heart. She is working on training Kit, a half-human/half rodach (wraith) and making sure he is capable of living in his new reality. The first book in this series is supposed to show how they me

An intriguing paranormal novella, with a nice ripe plot that moves along with surprising speed, entertaining detail, and charming character development! The Ravenous Dead picks up directly after The Stubborn Dead (which I listened to in audio.) I highly recommend reading The Stubborn Dead first for background of the lore and development of the main characters.

The Ravenous Dead is about a reaper who is on a killing spree. Rachel, a member of The Order of Rescue Mediums, must find and des

I soo loved this one also, if she only would write longer stories it would be perfect. In this new adventure Rachel is taking care of Kit while Vancouver is infested by a reaper that lives with other people's souls. In the meanwhile we find out more stuff about Rachel's life and we met the bad (?) Lucas. Looking forward the 3rd one!

Anche questa storia di Rachel la medium mi è piaciuta molto, se solo l'autrice scrivesse storie più lunghe sarebbe perfetto! In questa nuova avventure la nostra eroin

You know when you love the first book in a series (The Stubborn Dead) you worry if the sequel can match it? Worry not! The Ravenous Dead is just as intriguing, just as unexpected ... and I'll never look at a zombie the same way.

Fantastic tale with a strong, complex heroine.

Okay ... where's the next instalment?

I love this series so far, and gobbled up this novella in record time. Rachel is back and she's up against a scary powerful beastie who feeds on souls, ripping them violently from his victims. The world building is fun, I love the characters, and the relationship between Rachel and her rodach is getting very, very interesting. Count me in for the next installment!

I really wish that the author would have gotten another person to narrate these audio books, they would have been so much better. Plus, the paranormals in her story are very remarkable; seeing as these stories are considered short stories. I really wish that the author would go ahead a write a full length novel and make the main character a little more likeable. If the author does that then these stories will be great!!!

Born and raised in South Africa, Natasha moved with her family to Canada, settling just outside of Vancouver, British Columbia.
