Paris
A pitch-black and wonderfully trashy comedy based on stories and gossip from the world of fashion and showbiz, Paris is both lyrical and critical of a society that is obsessed with beauty, money, status and power. The first part, I Love Paris, tells the story of three friends who each want to make it. Hope hopes for a successful modelling career despite a big scar on her face. Faith has faith that she will make it big as a singer, while Chastity literally sleeps her way to the top - as a porn star. The second part, I hate Paris, goes on to tell of their rise - and fall.

Revenind la personaje, toate sunt conduse de aceleași două lucruri: setea de bani și dorința de succes. Parisul este arătat ca o junglă în care fiecare trebuie să supraviețuiască și cum altfel de cât făcând bani, chiar dacă asta înseamnă pierderea decenței și moralității dar, după cum spunea și Chastity: ”Moralitatea nu îmi va plăti chiria”.

Janice Dickinson, during her more cogent moments on America's Next Top Model, spoke a lot of sense. A lot. I like Janice. I think she might terrify me substantially if I ever met her in person, but I do like her. 'Paris' opens with a quote from Janice: "I lived the stuff Jackie Collins writes about". And that, much more than the spectacularly misleading front cover of pinks and sparkles, sets up the stories to come.
This is the self-proclaimed 'first graphic trash novel in the universe', and to be frank that is its probably key selling point. Narratively wise, it's a cross between The Devil Wears Prada and Valley of the Dolls, ultimately occupying a sort of weird space that occasionally dips its toes firmly into Sex and the City territory. But it's interesting, despite feeling like substantial parts of it have already been done before, it's really interesting.
Split into two parts, 'I Heart Paris' and 'I Hate Paris', 'Paris' recounts the careers of three friends and their experiences in the high society of Paris. Hope, scarred from an accident, moves in with Chastity and Faith. Hope's dreaming of becoming a top model, but keeps half of her face covered at all times to hide the scars. Chastity is the body, selling hers, using hers to keep herself in the life she wants to live in. And Faith is a singer, determined to hit the big time.
There's an element of this book that doesn't sit 100% well with me and I think, perhaps, it's something to do with the gender semantics at play. 'Paris' is full of sexuality, often displaying some distinctly adult panels full of orgiastic behaviour, where everything and more is on show, and therefore isn't a comic for those easily offended or those under a certain age. But I think my discomfort is more than that, and it relates particularly to how the women, in a book dominated by women, all fall and fail and implode. It's not easy to keep reading when your protagonist is debasing herself yet again and for what feels like very little textual justification. I've not read many trash novels - this and Valley of the Dolls being pretty much my sole exposure - so I'm not sure whether this is a hallmark of the genre. All I can say is that I found parts of it discomforting.
But I kept reading because I did, despite this growing unease, enjoy parts of it. The artwork is lovely, and I really liked the little fashion historian notes underneath certain pages. Nearly all of outfits worn by the characters have footnotes stating the designer, which is a very clever touch. The only problem is that this does tend to pull you out of the story as you're constantly shifting back and forth to look at the outfits or to check the references.
As a whole, Paris is a problematic yet enjoyable book. But I really wish somebody would redesign that cover.

This is not for the tender or prudish.
->You get plenty of penetration, seamlessly, with a host of dopes throwing ropes- all participants immersed in full orgiastic ecstasy. I loved it! I'm shocked that it was the Brits, of all people, who translated this.
But this is a great book where it counts.
->It's an entertaining and engaging read with interesting and enticing characters that you get the pleasure of rooting for or hating. Other than very abrupt scene changes, the plot holds you tight for long sessions of enjoyment. After all, three Belgians wrote it (they are the best in the biz per capita).
I find the art adorable and its cuteness fits the story perfectly. There's a keen contrast going on with the grimy dealings that it illustrates. While it's not the type I usually go for, because of it's simplicity, I must admit that I cherished it. I am sold on this guy 360°- he even afforded me with the zest of small breasts (see my review of "Meatcake")!

A visual novella about three girls that make it big in Paris and suffer the consequences.
The story itself is somewhat predictable, being another stereotypical allegory for how the fashion industry - and Parisian high society in general - is just a well oiled machine, designed to grind people into either consumers or products (usually both). I guess it’s supposed to be a commentary on contemporary capitalism, though at the end the story is flipped on its head, as the boss of the protagonist says that she made it trough, all on her own, without damaging herself and others.
The dialogue is clunky and full of cliches, but I’m guessing that it was translated (probably from French), though I doubt it was any good to begin with. It felt like reading a poorly written crossover between The Phantom Menace script and the worst lines of Californication.
Honestly the single redeeming quality of the whole thing was the art. It’s both good in the stylistic sense and it conveyed every aspect of the story to the maximum. One of the central aspects of the novella is the fact that the clothes that the characters wear in the panels are mentioned at the bottom of the page. That, for me, shows the passion and the care that went into the making of the book.
Leaving behind the thinly-veiled references to celebrity life, I would recommend this book only if you’ve just yesterday got banished from an Amish community and you’re seeking arguments for going back.

Het contrast tussen de suikerspin-omslag en de gitzwarte inhoud kan niet groter zijn. Dit is geen chicklit voor pubermeisjes, maar een keihard relaas over drie ambitieuze vrouwen en hoe ze het, in hun milieu - mode, muziek, internet - vergaat. Expliciete seks, intriges, verraad, drugs,... passeren de revue in de immer zwierige stijl van Vande Wiele die het daarbij verre van cartoonesk houdt (al zou je dat durven denken als je het boek openslaat en er een vluchtige blik in werpt). Zalig leesvoer dus voor wie houdt van 'Sex and the city' met net dat snuifje meer.

This was my first graphic novel and when I saw the cover I thought this would be a fun chick lit book. Didn't realize from the description it was a graphic novel. The drawings were good, the storyline was not for me. I won this in the giveaway.

This book is part of a rather new movement within the French-Belgian comics market, where the design is intended to appeal to female readers and the covers are usually in different variations of pink. With this book, the cover is deceiving, though. Yes, the story has no doubt been written very much with a predominantly female readership in mind, but it is anything but rosy.
We follow three women, Hope, Faith and Chastity, named in the ancient tradition of allegorical names. In this story they work hard at living up to the opposite of their respective names. The main character seeks a career as a super model, even though part of her face has been disfigured in a car accident. Her two friends seek fame as a singer and fame and fortune in general. During this graphic novel they all achieve their goals, but loose their ideals in the process and meets a very harsh reality, where sex is a commodity and people are prepared to walk over graves to achieve theory goals. Sadly all the depravity and egoism is most probably near to the truth in the circles where these characters roam.
One interesting aspect of the book is that on almost every page there is a note at the bottom, telling the reader which famous brand of clothing the characters are wearing, indicating that all clothes were actually drawn from real life. A first for comics, as far as I know.
The black and white art is in the French-Belgian school started by Philippe Dupuy and Charles Berberian with Monsieur Jean: L'amour, La Concierge, that is stylistic, iconic and with a beautiful ink line. This lighthearted style contrasts heavily with the content, which encompasses violence, cruelty and even rape.
There is much to commend this book. The art is beautiful and it was a riveting read, and, despite the very obviously gendered cover, this is not a book only for female readers.

Kulsort komedie om stjernedrømme, glamour og jetsetlivet i Paris. Tre veninder vil være model, popsangerinde og rig og/eller berømt og ingen af dem skyr nogen midler for at opnå det de drømmer om. De er modbydelige og manipulerende og de er naïve og ensporede. Jo mere jeg læste, jo mere afsky følte jeg – både generelt for naïve trunter med stjernedrømmer men især for de tre hovedpersoner. Ingen af dem har nogen forsonende træk. De er tomme skaller, indbildte, egoistiske møgkællinger der behandler alle omkring sig som lort og bliver selv behandlet ligeså frygteligt.
Det er nok en satire, og den rammer helt sikkert også plet, men den efterlod mig med en dårlig smag i munden. Jeg er nok mere til historier hvor jeg kan engagere mig i karakterene fremfor at grine af dem.

Un graphic novel dans lequel il n'est pas des plus aisé de s'immerger. L'aspect graphique est simple, sans grande spécificité mais reste clair malgré des personnages tous plus ressemblant les uns que les autres.
J'ai eu du mal à m'intéresser à la vie de Hope et de ses "amies", cela s'est même probablement transformé en un voyeurisme malsain m'ayant forcé à continuer jusqu'au bout plutôt qu'un réel intérêt envers cette jeune femme stéréotypée virevoltante dans un Paris vomitoire au possible.
La place de la femme dans cette société du paraitre est dépeinte avec une noirceur qui met mal à l'aise.
Une lecture - réservé aux adultes - dont on en sort soit rapidement, soit perturbé.
Je ne conseillerai pas malgré tout, mais si vous le trouvez gratuitement quelque part, pourquoi pas. Après tout ça se lit très vite.

But, wow! It was a very interesting read for me! I love, love, loved the artwork! And the plot was really good too! Overall, it was a nice, "very first graphic trash novel".

'It was ok' says it. I liked the drawing style of Vande Wiele, but the story wasn't my cup of tea. No real character depth, three exaggerated females with seemingly non-existant morale most of the time get a break in the fashion world and become famous as a model, a singer and a starlet/porn actress before their inevitable downfall.

Mi aveva attirato la struttua particolare: il volume è composto di due parti che si leggono in versi opposti, convergenti, e si chiamano rispettivamente "Parigi, ti amo" e "Parigi, ti odio". Le particolarità finiscono qui. La storia è orrenda, i disegni sono fastidiosi.

This graphic novel reminded me of Valley of the Dolls & I loved the illustrations. The dark story line is in stark contrast to the pink glittery cover. Not what I would have expected, but definitely a page-turner.

Paris is een graphic novel van de Belgische striptekenaar en illustrator Maarten Vande Wiele. Hij staat bekend om zijn kritische blik op glamour en beroemdheden ook hier is dat duidelijk te merken. Het verhaal laat goed zien hoe hard de modewereld kan zijn en hoe succes niet altijd is wat je ervan verwacht het heeft ook zijn gevolgen.
Het verhaal draait om drie jonge vrouwen namelijk Faith, Chastity en Hope. Elk zijn ze naar Parijs vertrokken om hun dromen waar te maken. Faith wil een succesvolle zangeres worden, terwijl Chastity graag rijk en beroemd wilt zijn ongeacht de manier waarop. Hope heeft sinds haar jeugd littekens op haar gezicht door een auto-ongeluk, ondanks dat droomt ze er toch van om model te worden. Maar al snel komen ze erachter dat de modewereld helemaal niet zo glamoureus is als ze hadden gehoopt. In plaats van het sprookje dat ze verwacht hadden belandde ze in een wereld waar macht, manipulatie en opofferen de norm zijn.
Wat ik sterk vond aan deze graphic novel, is hoe hard en ongefilterd de modewereld wordt neergezet. In het begin hebben de drie hoofdpersonages veel dromen en ambities maar hoe verder je in het verhaal zit hoe meer je ziet dat hun dromen als het ware afbrokkelen. Vooral Hope begint als een zelfzeker en optimistisch personage, maar toch moet ze zich constant aanpassen aan de hoge eisen. Faith en Chastity komen allebei ook vast te zitten in een wereld waar succes niet altijd gelukkig maakt.
Het tempo ligt best hoog. Ik vind dat daardoor het verhaal geen enkel moment saai wordt. De verteller geeft een blik op verschillende perspectieven zonder dat één personage echt centraal staat. Naar mijn mening maakt dat het veel interessanter zo kan je jezelf beter inleven in het verhaal.
De belangrijkste thema’s in Paris zijn de schijn en de echte realiteit van de modewereld. De auteur laat zien hoe beroemdheid en succes vaak gepaard gaan met eenzaamheid en bedrog. Seksualiteit speelt ook een grote rol ik vond dit overdreven veel het had wat minder gemogen. Iets wat ik heel toepasselijk vond voor het verhaal is de tekenstijl. Het heeft namelijk een hele harde en sombere sfeer de tekeningen waren allemaal in zwart-wit dat past hier goed bij. Iets wat daarentegen totaal niet toepasselijk was vond ik de cover van het verhaal, namelijk fel roze dat gaf mij het gevoel alsof dit een heel vluchtig en optimistisch verhaal is wat totaal niet zo was. Wat ik persoonlijk ook minder fijn vond, is dat de personages alleen maar van de ene ellende naar de andere teleurstelling gaan zonder echt de kans te krijgen om eruit te komen. Ik snap dat dit laat zien hoe hard de modewereld is en succesvol zijn maar op een gegeven moment voelt het alsof ze geen enkele kans krijgen om zich te herpakken of een andere weg in te slaan. Dat had het voor mij net wat sterker gemaakt.

Paris is een graphic novel met een mooie zwart-witte tekenstijl die perfect past bij het verhaal. Het gaat over mode, beroemdheid, geld en hoe alles niet altijd is zoals het lijkt. Eerst lijkt het beroemde leven geweldig, maar al snel krijgen we de slechte kanten te zien.
Het is geschreven door Maarten Vande Wiele, een Belgische striptekenaar en illustrator, vooral bekend om zijn satirische en vaak scherpe kijk op glamour, beroemdheid en de modewereld.
Het verhaal begint bij Hope, een meisje met een verminkt gezicht door een auto-ongeluk in haar kindertijd. Ondanks haar littekens op haar gezicht droomt ze ervan om een topmodel in Parijs te worden. In Parijs raakt ze bevriend met haar twee kamergenoten: Faith en Chastity. Faith wil een carrière als zangeres en Chastity wil rijk en beroemd worden, het maakt niet uit hoe. Al snel hebben ze door dat het niet zo geweldig is als ze dachten. Ze krijgen te maken met de harde en oppervlakkige wereld van de mode-industrie, waar roem en succes vaak een hoge prijs hebben.
Ik geef de graphic novel drie sterren. Er zit veel seksualiteit in, wat soms wat extreem was, maar het verhaal is wel interessant. De tekenstijl is prachtig en de kleine modegeschiedenis-notities onder sommige pagina’s vond ik een leuke toevoeging. Bij bijna alle outfits van de personages worden de ontwerpers genoemd, wat ik een creatief idee vind.
Het boek leest vlot; als ik had gewild, had ik het in één keer kunnen uitlezen. Wat ik minder leuk vond, is dat de drie vrouwelijke hoofdpersonages allemaal op een bepaalde manier afhankelijk zijn van seks om hun carrière op te bouwen. Ik begrijp wel dat dit bij de boodschap van het verhaal hoort.
Ik vind ook dat de cover niet past bij de inhoud. De felroze kleur met glitters laat het lijken alsof Paris een vrolijk verhaal over Parijs en mode is, maar in werkelijkheid is het eerder donker met expliciete scènes en laat het zien hoe nep de modewereld eigenlijk is.
Een ander interessant aspect van Paris is hoe het laat zien dat beroemdheid en geld niet altijd geluk betekent. De personages worden geconfronteerd met bedrog, manipulatie en eenzaamheid, ondanks hun succes. Het boek werpt een kritische blik op de modewereld en de oppervlakkige manier waarop mensen worden beoordeeld op hun uiterlijk.
Samengevat vond ik Paris een interessante graphic novel, hoewel sommige dingen voor mij wat te ver gingen. Ik zou het aanraden aan lezers die houden van verhalen met een kritische kijk op de modewereld. Mensen die geïnteresseerd zijn in mode, roem en de duistere kant van beroemdheid zullen dit boek zeker boeiend vinden.

In Parijs raakt ze bevriend met haar twee kamergenoten: Faith en Chastity. Faith wil een carrière als zangeres en Chastity wil rijk en beroemd worden, het maakt niet uit hoe. Al snel hebben ze door dat het niet zo geweldig is als ze dachten. Ze krijgen te maken met de harde en oppervlakkige wereld van de mode-industrie, waar roem en succes vaak een hoge prijs hebben.

Paris is een graphic novel gemaakt door de Belgische schrijver en tekenaar Maarten Vande Wiele. Hij maakt vaak verhalen over de harde kanten van het leven. Dit boek is uitgegeven door Oogachtend. Het boek is volledig in zwart-wit getekend, dat past goed bij de donkere sfeer van het verhaal. De cover van het boek ziet er veel vrolijker uit dan dat het verhaal zelf, waardoor je een hele andere verwachting van het boek zou hebben voordat je het leest.
In Paris volgen we drie vriendinnen met grote dromen. De ene wil een beroemd model worden, de andere een succesvolle zangeres en de derde wil gewoon rijk en bekend zijn. Ze vertrekken naar Parijs, de stad van mode en beroemdheden, om hun dromen waar te maken. Maar al snel ontdekken ze dat beroemdheid en geld niet zomaar komt. Het verhaal laat zien hoe hun leven steeds meer draait om seks, misbruik en drugs. Het boek laat zien dat je in de modewereld bijna verplicht bent om plastische chirurgie te doen om een perfect model te zijn, dat je zonder drank en drugs de harde realiteit niet aankan en dat je zonder seks en mannen met geld nergens komt. Alles is negatief, waardoor er weinig hoop of andere mogelijkheden getoond worden. Dit maakt het soms voorspelbaar .Het boek leest makkelijk en de tekeningen zijn mooi, maar ook somber. Het verhaal eindigt ook heel slecht, waardoor het veel minder inspirerend is om je dromen waar te maken. De enige positieve boodschap die we kunnen meekrijgen van dit boek is dat beroemdheid en geld niet altijd geluk betekent. De personages blijven een beetje vlak, omdat de nadruk vooral ligt op de slechte dingen die ze meemaken. Toch blijft het boek spannend, omdat het op een extreme manier laat zien hoe moeilijk het is om beroemd te worden, geld te krijgen en hoe ver mensen ervoor zouden gaan.

Als je houdt van harde verhalen over de duistere kant van beroemdheid, is dit boek een aanrader. Maar als je een inspirerend verhaal zoekt over mensen die hun dromen waarmaken, dan is dit boek misschien niets voor jou.

Ik heb het boek 'Paris' gelezen.
Het is geschreven door Maarten Vande Wiele.
Het verhaal gaat over 3 meisjes genaamd: Hope, Faith en Chastity die proberen hun plekje te vinden in de mode- en muziekwereld van Parijs. Het lijkt voor hun als een droom met veel ambitie maar al snel worden ze wakker geschud en komt de harde realiteit naar boven. Ze voelen heel veel druk om perfect te willen zijn en voelen aan dat het gaat over manipulatie en verschillende opofferingen en dat weegt heel zwaar door. Na een tijdje krijgen ze de smaak dan toch wat de pakken en krijgen ze het gevoel dat ze misschien toch kans hebben om hun droom te kunnen waarmaken en te doen waar ze goed in zijn.
Het boek sprak me meteen aan vanwege de opvallende cover en de leuke titel. Toen ik begon met het boek te lezen werd mij al snel duidelijk dat het een leuke en vlotte graphic novel was.
Het boek gaat over leuke personages die elk hun eigen pad grondig uitleggen. Het speelt zich af in Parijs wat ik ook heel leuk vind want de stad spreekt me heel erg aan. Het verhaal word heel mooi verteld en het zorgt er voor mij ook voor dat ik het verhaal zo niet saai vindt. Het thema mode en muziek spreekt me heel erg aan waardoor dit boek voor mij echt een topper was.
Ik vond het een leuk boek omdat ik me heel vaak kon vinden in uitspraken of bevindingen van de personages of de verteller. Er gebeurde veel waardoor het boek voor mij heel interessant bleef. Zo kreeg ik niet snel het gevoel dat het saai werd en was het een boek waar ik vlot in kon lezen.
Ik zou het boek dan ook zeker aan iemand anders aanraden omdat het een heel oppervlakkig thema is dat ook heel veel andere lezers zou kunnen aanspreken. Iedereen zijn leeskeuze is daarnaast bij iedereen ook wel verschillend. Het hangt er hierbij dus vanaf of je dit soort thema's leuk vind om te lezen of niet. Spreekt de titel en het thema jou aan is dit zeker een boek dat jij wel eens leuk zou kunnen vinden.

Accidenti che graphic novel dura!
Il magico mondo della moda in e per estensione dello show biz viene messo a nudo in questo libro in modo esplicito e senza pudore: opportunismo, sfruttamento sessuale (inteso sia nel senso di aperta violenza, sia dello sfruttamento del sesso come moneta di pagamento per vedersi aperte le porte di una carriera più o meno brillante), abuso di sostanze, abusi psicologici questo è il mix a cui sono sottoposte le tre protagoniste che desiderano rispettivamente fare carriera nella moda, nella musica e sposare un uomo ricco. Per quanto amichevole, il loro rapporto sarà comunque caratterizzato da voltafaccia, pugnalate alle spalle, screzi e litigi più o meno gravi, senza esclusione di colpi, fino ad un finale non certo felice, ma con una punta di giustizia poetica.
Bellissimi i disegni, essenziali, ma estremamente curati con i riferimenti agli stilisti che hanno creato le varie mise indossate dalle tre protagoniste. Le fashion victim paluderanno
