Whether you are messing about on the river or sailing out to sea, you will soon get that special type of hunger that being afloat seems to create. Then it is just a matter of - if you are suitably equipped onboard - to go into the little galley and fix up a snack or something more substantial.
Seasoned boaters and landlubbers alike may find something of interest from this charming little book - part of a massive series of similar finds - and the 34 traditional recipes that have been passed down from boating families through the ages, each providing a different story or fulfilling a particular need such as building up energy for the hard labour of navigating canal locks.
Each recipe comes with its own history capsule before getting right down the nitty gritty of how to prepare the food, often in an assumed cramped, moving kitchen. It is interesting to examine the small differences involved in food preparation, such as putting flour in a bag and then adding the item to be coated inside before shaking and removing again - something you would not normally do in a domestic kitchen at home. Each little tidbit can be thought-provoking when you think WHY did they need to do it like that.
As usual each book is richly illustrated with a number of period pictures that help focus the reader's mind not to the food itself but the whole scene of boating. A very inexpensive little diversion providing some recipes that one might not have considered before so even if you find one recipe of interest you should be pleased... and then there are 33 others to richly consider.
